To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY CLING, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of Charleston and State of South Carolina, have made an Improvement in Beds, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in beds especially designed for use of invalids, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side View, and Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section of a bed embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 4 is a cross section of the bed, and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view.

In carrying out the invention, I adapt my improvements for application to an ordinary metal bed, having the head board A, foot board B, and side rails C. The improvement includes the three sections 1, 2 and 3, which are made separate and are hinged together at their adjacent edges, so the head section 1 and the foot section 3 may be raised and lowered to adjust them between the positions shown in Fig. 1 and Fig". 2. As shown, these sections 1, 2 and 3, comprise suitable frames and springs stretched therein, and the intermediate section 2 is supported upon the side rails C of the bed, and is provided with clips C secured to the frame of the said section 2 and projecting beneath the side rails C to secure the intermediate section 2 in place and firmly in connection with the bedstead.

The head section 1 is hinged at its lower edge to the upper edge of the section 2 as shown in Fig. 2, so it can be raised to form a back rest for the occupant of the bed, and the foot section 3 is hinged at its upper edge to the lower edge of the section 2 so it can be lowered as shown in Fig. 1, when it is desired to support the occupant of the bed in a sitting posture. When raised to the position shown in Fig. 2, the foot section 3 is supported by a keeper D pivoted at D to the foot board of the bed, so it may be turned ,to bear beneath the lower edge of the foot section 3, as will be understood from Figs. 2 and 3 oi the drawing. In connection with the foot section 3, I provide a foot rest 4 having side bars 5 lapping alongside the foot section 3 and slotted longitudinally at 6 to receive the clamping devices 7 in the form of nuts and screws which may be tightened to secure the foot rest4 in the position shown in Fig. 1, or may be loosened to permit the adjustment of the foot rest below the foot section 3 out of the way as indicated in dotted lines Fig. 2, when the foot rest is not in use.

Means are provided for raising the head section 1 from the side of the bed, consisting preferably of a bar 2, and having a lateral extension or treadle 10, the

whole forming a foot lever adapted, as the lateral portion' 10 extends from the side of the bed, to be operated by the foot of the operator from the side of the bed, leaving the hands free to aid the patient in any way desired. The sections 1 and 3 are connected so they may beraised and lowered in unison, and this is preferably effected by means of the connecting bar 11, secured pivotally at .its upper end at 12 to the under side of the head section 1, and extending thence downwardly and rearwardly below the middle section 2, and secured pivotally at 13, to the under side of the foot section 3. This connection at 13 may be detached by removing thenut 14, see Fig. 3, when it is desired to manipulate the head section 1 independently of the foot section, and vice versa. A table or rest 15, in the form of a suitable board adapted for adjustment in front of the section 1, as shown in Fig. 1, when in use, or below the said section 1, as shown in Fig. 2, when not in use, is provided with the side bars 16 slotted longitudinally at 17 to receive the screws 18 on the sides of the section 1, which together with the clamping nuts 19, shown in Fig. 1, may be utilized'ior securing the table 15 in any desired adjustment in front of a patient, and also permit the adjustment of the table 15 below the head section 1 and into the keeper 20, provided on the under side of the said section 1, when the said table is not in use. It will be noticed that the connection 11 is a single bar extending on a curved line between the sections 1 and 3, and operating to positively transmit to the section 3, the movements of the section 1 in the operation of the invention.

For holding the head section 1 when raised, 1 provide the supporting bars 2], which are pivoted at 22 to the middle section 2, and are perforated near their opposite or free ends to engage in suitable ones of a series of pins 23 extending laterally from the sides of the section 1 in order to hold the head section at any desired inclination.

The middle section is provided with a commode attachment comprising a frame having a main plate E fixed to the frame of the middle section, a removable seat F having a depending portion including a sheet metal tube G sprung at its upper end into a groove f in the seat F and projecting thence down through an opening in the main plate E to conduct the discharge to a suitable vessel placed in the sliding box H which. is movably held in guides E on the underside of the main plate E so it can be moved laterally toward the side of the bed when it is desired to insert or remove the vessel. The sliding box H has a hinged door H to permit convenient access tothe vessel.

It will be understood that the mattress cover of the middle section has a suitable cut out portion in register with the seat and a pad to close the same when the commode is not in use and the bottom sheet of the bed may have a flap cut away on three sides to register with the said pad.

I claim: I

1. A bed having hinged head and foot sections, a spring bar secured at its opposite ends to the said sections and forming a connection between the same, and a foot lever having a laterally extending portion forming a treadle, and an upwardly extending portion connecting said laterally extending portion .with the head section, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of the middle section, head and foot sections hinged to the middle section, bars pivoted to the middle section and engaging the head section for supporting the same when elevated, a foot rest having side bars connected with the foot section, a bar extending between and connecting the head and foot sections, and a foot lever having a portion secured its upper end to the head section, and extending downwardly and rearwardly, and provided with a laterally extending portion forming a treadle, substantially as set forth.

3. A bed having an intermediate section and hinged foot and head sections, means connected with said head and foot sections for operating the same, a'footrest having side bars adjustably connected with the foot section, and

a cross bar adapted for adjustment upon the foot section when in use, or below said section when not in use, and means for securing the foot rest in position for use, substantially as set forth.
