Be it known that I, ERNST F. HOFMANN,M. D., of New York, in the county and State of 'N ew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Supporting- Bandages; and I do herebydeclare the following to-be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying'diawing, forming part of this specification, inwhieh drawing- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of this invention when thrown open.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal section thereof when closed.

This invention relates to a supporting-bandage, composed of an elastic ring fitting to the penis, and con# nected by elastic straps to one jaw of a frame, the other jaw of which supports a bag of oil-silk,`or other suitable water-tight material, large enough to admit the penis, and also a sponge, which is intended to be saturatedwith chloride of lime, phenic acid, or other disinfecting-material, in such a manner, that in syphilitic and other similar diseases, the penis is protected by the bag, and the virus discharged therefrom, is immediately absorbed by the sponge, and disinfected by the chemical with which said sponge is saturated, thereby promoting materially, not only the comfort, but also the convalescence of the patient.

A represents a ring, made of a strip of India rubber, or other suitable elastic material, large enough to fit the penis of the patient without undue pressure or tension.

This ring is intended to connect, by elastic straps B, with a bandage, which may be fastened around the body of the patient, in any suitablel position, and said ring also connects, by means of elastic straps O, with one jaw a of a frame, D, the other jaw b of which, supports the bag E.

The two jaws a and b are simple rings of whalebone,

-or other suitable material, and they are connected by a hinge, c, and provided-with a suitablespring-catch, or latch, d, so that the same can be thrown open t o the position shown in Iig. 1, or closed as shown in g. 2. y

Said rings, or jaws b are ofI such adiameter, that they freely pass over the penis, and do notcause apressure thereon, even in case of an erection, and the bag E, which is made of oil-silk, or other suitable Water-tight material, islarge enough to admit the penis, and also a sponge, F, as indicated in fig. 2.

This sponge is intended to be saturated with chloride of lime, phenic acid, or some other disinfecting material, so that the virus discharged from thepeuis, will be disinfected, and rendered iunoxious to the health of the patient.

By the bagE, the penis is protected against friction 0n the garment, and by introducing into this bag the sponge F, saturated as described, the convalescence of the patient is materially promoted, and by supporting said bag by means of three or more elastic straps, the

free access of air is allowed, andthe heating of the disJ- eased part is as much as possible avoided.

If the patient desires to let water, the bag E is turned down to the position shown in fig. 1.

As an article of manufacture, the supporting-bandage, formed by the arrangement of the elastic ring A, straps C, hinged frame D, penis-bag E, and the scrotum-bag F, substantially as herein'represented and described.
