A. H. & R. P. DANIEL. WORK BOX FOR SEWING MACHINE TABLES.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 14, 1908.

ANNIE HOLLIDAY DANIEL AND ROBERT PATRICK DANIEL, OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, 1908.
Application filed January 14, 1908. Serial No. 410,740.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ANNIE HOLLIDAY DANIEL and ROBERT PATRICK DANIEL, citi zens of the United States, and residents of San Antonio, in the county of Bexar and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved fork-Box for Sewing-Machine Tables, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to sewing machine cabinets of the drop type, and its object is to provide a new and improved work box for removable attachment to a sewing machine table, and arranged to require no remodeling of the sewing machine cabinet to allow of readily placing it in position or removing it therefrom without injury to the cabinet, to blend harmoniously with the other woodwork when in use, and to be wholly inconspicuous when closed.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment'of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement as applied and showing the cover open; Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of the same.
The sewing machine cabinet of the drop type is provided with the usual table top A, on which is hinged the drop head B, adapted to rest on a suitable foundation O arranged on the upper face of the table top A. The drop head Band its foundation O terminate at distances from both ends of the table top A, as plainly illustrated in Fig. 1, the terminal of the right-hand side of the said drop head B and its foundation O being a distance from the usual drawers D, mounted on the righthand side E of the cabinet, as plainly indi eated in Fig. 3. On the table A directly above the uppermost drawer D is arranged the work box, consisting essentially of a box body F, provided at the front and rearwith downwardly and inwardly extending spring clips G, adapted to engage the front and rear of the table top A, so as to removably hold the work box in position on the righthand. side of the table top A. On the outer end of the box body F are arranged hinges H connected with the cover I adapted to close the box body F, which latter is preferably provided with a tray J, preferably having compartments for containing pins, needles, buttons, spools and like articles.
The under side of the cover I is preferably recessed and is provided with retainers K for scissors, shears, and like tools, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The inner end of the box body F as well as the free end of the cover Iare curved, to snugly fit on and to conform to the adjacent ends of the foundation C and the drop head B, so that when the work box is in position and the cover I thereof is closed, then it harmoniously blends with the surrounding woodwork, and the work box is wholly inconspicuous.
Now by the arrangement described the work box can be readily slipped in position on the table top A of sewing machine cabinets, as heretofore eonstructed, without requiring remodeling of the cabinet or cutting out portions of the same, and at the same time the work box is not conspicuous.
It is understood that when the cover I is swung open into the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, ready access is had to the contents of the tray J or to the tools held in the keepers K.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A work box attachment for sewing machine cabinets of the drop type, comprising a box having a hinged cover and provided with clips for engaging the table top to hold it on the said top between the end thereof and the drop head, the box having its sides beveled to correspond with the beveled edges of the head and top and being of a width to extend from the head to the end of the table and of a thickness that when in position it will be flush with the said head.
2. Awork box attachment for sewing machine cabinets of the drop type, comprising a box body adapted to be set on the table top and provided with clips for engagement with the said top to hold the body in position thereon between its end and the drop leaf and its foundation, and a cover hinged on the said box body for closing the same, the inner ends of the said box body and its cover conforming to and joining the adjacent ends of the drop head cover and its foundation.
3. A work box attachment for sewing ma- In testimony whereof We have signed our 16 names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ANNIE HOLLIDAY DANIEL. ROBERT PATRICK DANIEL.
