To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EMMA L. DUNNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Providence, in the county of Providence, State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vaporizers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a device adapted to contain a chemical liquid for purifying the air in sick-rooms, work-shops, and other places where pure fresh air is required. The

object in view being to provide a liquid receptacle with means for throwing oil the vapor of said liquid in order to destroy the foul odor in the atmosphere of sick-rooms, workshops, or other places where air may become impure.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of this character with a locking means to insure a proper working of the interior parts from being tampered with by a miscreant, while the device is in use.

To the above ends essentially my invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved vaporizer. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the device, taken in line of Fig. 1, showing the device in operative position upon the wall of a room, and, Fig. 3 is a modification of the cover-closing means for the receptacle.

A layer of absorbent material 9 is folded upon a rod-extension 7L whose ends are secured centrally on the end walls a, a of the receptacle, and this layer of absorbent material is partially submerged in my specially prepared chemical liquid, designated by reference letter i. The capillary action of the absorbent material 9 draws up the liquid from its volume i, so that the portion of the absorbent material above the level of the liquid is kept continually saturated and the vapor caused by the constant evaporation of the li uid, from this distended portion of the absorbent material, passes out through perforations j, formed in the walls of the des pecification of Letters Patent.

The cover I), which is hinged to the rear longitudinal wall of the receptacle, as at a point I) in Fig. 2, has a centrally depending tongue 6 secured by solder upon said cover, and said tongue is provided with an opening b to receive therethrough a pin 7c, which is secured to the front wall of the receptacle and projecting within the same. The tongue b is of spring-metal and has its lower portion curved, in order to pass over in contact upon the point of the pin it, which, when the cover is closed, enters the opening b of the springtongue 6 and holds the device in a locked condition, in the manner shown in Fig. 2.

To unlock the device, a common pin Z is used for entering through a fine perforation m formed in the front wall of the receptacle and forcing the spring-tongue b from its connection with the pin it to the dotted position indicated in Fig. 2, when the cover will then be free to swing open.

The manner of unlocking the device acts as a puzzle to any other than the owner or person having charge of the device, thus the interior parts are protected and a proper working of the device is assured.

As a modification to the concealed means of locking the device, as described, the cover I) may be independent of the receptacle and have its longitudinal edges curled, as at n, n in Fig. 3, in order to slide and hold by frictional contact upon the beaded edges n, a, formed on the front and rear walls of the receptacle.

By my construction and arrangement of parts, I provide a neat and useful device for the purpose intended, and having means to insure an effective working while the device is in use.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is-

The combination of the receptacle a provided with vent openings j, j; the rod-extension 71 the layer of absorbent material g; the pin 7c; and the cover I) hinged to said receptacle and having the tongue if provided with an opening to receive said pin therethrough, substantially as set forth.
