Description

PATENTED JUNE 16,' E908;
H. HAWEEY.. DENAMENTAL HOLDER AND METHOD DE PDDDDDING THE SAME. APPLGATION FILED APR. 20, 1907.
UNrTED STATES PATENT onion.
HERMAN HAWLEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO 4(JASTLE BRAID COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
ORNAMENTAL HOLDER AND METHOD F PRoDUciNG THE SAME.
. Application led April 20,
`To allwhom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, HERMAN HAWLEY, a
I lcitizen of the United States, residin atNew York city, borough of Brooklyn, an State of New York, have invented certain new and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 16, 1908.
1907. Serial No. 369,206.
A said mold being similar to those which have heretoforebeen used in this art.
As the braiding operation progresses, the covering is built up around thetube 1 until useful Improvements in Ornamental Holders a considerable distance beyond the open end and Method of Producing the Same, of which A the following is a full, clear, and' exact description.
My invention is designed for the production of an ornamental holder suitable Jfor- ``f the tube, as shown in Fig. 3. vof the braid are then cut, and the free end 4 thus formed is tucked within the o en end oi' thetube, as shown in Fig. 4. T e elaslholding small articles,.as for example, hair ering and the fold 4 holds the latter in conpins, .and the same resides in the novel construction of such holder and in the method whereby the holder may be formed from a tube closed at one end and provided with a -braided covering by which various orna i mental eiiects may be reduced according to the material used for t e covering, the braidr being longer than the tube, and having its .l free end tucked within the'open end ol' the .tube to form a fold andheld 1n contact-with the bore 'thereoic by theelasticity or tension of the strands of. the braid,
In Aorder that my invention may be more fully understood reference is hereby made to i' the braiding operation is stop ed and the braid cut, and Fiv. 4 is a centra vertical section Vofthe completed devicev `Corresponding parts are designated by the same reference numerals inthe various views.
1 The tube l which is to form the body of the holder may be of the form shown in the drawing, or of any other desired shape, and may be of any suitable material, but prefer to luse the ordinary glass test' tube when the holder is for receiving hat pins. 45.
This tube is toA beplaced in any of the well known machines for ap lying a braided covering, and in starting to liraidthe covering a mold 2 is preferably' used Jfor holding ,the ends of the strands 3 comprising the braided covering,
` tactwith the bore of the tube so that it is not necessaitogcement the fold to the wall of the tube, although, of course, this can be done if desired. A loo 5 of ribbon or other suitable. material is t en stitched to the .braid to form a means for suspending the holder i'rom a support.
Having now described my invention, what yI claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. The method of producing an ornamental holder, which consists in'iirst braidin around a mold and then around a tube closed at one end strands of any desired material working toward the open end and continuing until the braid exceeds4 the Vlength of 'the open end of the tube, and then tucking the free end of the braid into the open end of the the strands draws the fold into contact with the bore of the tube. i
2. As a new article of manufacture, a holder comprising a tube closed at one end, a mold adjacent Said end and a braid. covering surrounding said tube, the covering being tucked within the tube as a fold and held in contact with the bore thereof by the elasticity or tension of the strands of the braid.
In witness whereof, I subscribe my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
