Snom/mg:
following to be a ANDERSON W. LAWRENCE, OF DUQUESNE, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAT AND COAT RACK.
Application filed. April 13, 1908.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that l, ANDERSON W. LAW- EENCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duquesne, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Hat and Coat Rack; and l do declare the full, clear, 4and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to clothes racks and has for its object to provide a clothes rack which may be secured to the back of the head of a bed and which when not in use may be forced behind the head of the bed out of the way.
Another object is to provide a device of this kind which will automatically hold the hooks of the rack in place when the rack is forced behind the bed and which will extend the hooks in convenient position to receive articles to be hung thereon when the rack is projected.
For these and still other objects which will appear as the description proceeds the invention consists of certain novel features, arrangements and combinations of parts which the herein described clothes rack is one of many possible embodiments.
While herein the description refers to minute details of the invention, the invention is not limited to these as the details of construction and combination may be greatly varied without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
1n the annexed drawing forming a part of 4this specification in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views and which are for illustrative purposes only and thereforenot drawn to any particular scale,FFigure l is a kfront elevation showing my device attached to the head of a bed and in extended position, part of the head being broken away; Fig. 2 is a roar view of the same; Fig. 3 is a top plan view, parts being broken away; Fig. 4 is a sectional. view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1', Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional .vicw showing the rack in closed position.
Referring more particularly to the drawing my invention is shown as applied to the head 1 of a wooden bed having the usual post 2.
Specification of- Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 25, 1908.
Serial No. 426,794.
It is strictly understood that this device is not limited to use with beds of the particular kind shown, but may be used with any form of wooden or metal bed or on any other article of furniture.
The post 2 is provided with upper and lower spaced brackets 3 and 4 with the adj acent ends 5 and 6 offset to form sockets to receive and form guides for the sliding frame 7 of the rack. upper horizontal member 8 a lower horizontal member 9, an outer light casting 10, and an inner casting 11. The upper edge of the frame 7 may be provided with an outer knob 12 on top thereof for the reception of a hat or the like. The inner end of the frame may be provided with a projection 13. These parts may serve to limit the longitudinal movement of the frame 7 but may be omitted if desired. At a convenient distance from the inner end of the frame are a pair of spaced wires 14 having angularly bent ends 15 secured in the inner side of the frame members 8 and 9. These wires have slidably received therebetween and held thereon by means of eyes 16, the sliding block 17 having on the rear face thereof a projection 18 adapted to engagethe inner edge 19 of the post 2. For beds not provided with posts of this kind, a bracket having a shoulder may be added. intermediate said spaced wires and the casting 10 and pivotally mounted between said members 8 and 9 are the bracket hooks 2O which may extend at right angles to the frame 7 and which may fold between said frame members 8 and 9. Downwardly projecting brackets 21 secured to bar 8 limit the rearward movement of said hooked brackets when the same are folded. Loosely secured to the outer end of the sliding block 17 as by means of a link 22 is the operating rod 23 connecting the hooks 20 as shown. The operating rod 23 is pivotally secured to the hooks 2O intermediate the axis of movement thereof and the free end by means of a link or the like 24 whereby pivotal connection is established between said rod and said hook. A block 25 is placed upon. the upper face of the member 9 to limit the movement of the inner hook 20 when the same is in open position and thereby preventing movement ofthe other members 20 which are connected therewith by the rod 23. In addition to this block 25, Imay provide rearwardly and downwardly projecting pins 26 rigidly se- The frame 7 comprises an 1 with the post 2 are folded against the brackets 21. When it is desired to use the hooks for hanging anything thereon the casting 10 is grasped to pull out the frame until the projection 18 comes in contact with the edge 19. This causes the block 17 to fully open the` operating rod 23 thus drawing the hooks 2O into open position. The casting 10 may haveuprinted on the end thereof, the word {(Pu Having thus described my invention, what claim as new is 1. In combination with a supporting structure having spaced guides on one face thereof, a frame slidable vin said guides and provided with a plurality ofl pivotally mounted foldable hooks, an operating rod pivotally connected with said hooks, spaced guides mounted on said frame, a member slidably engaged with said guides, means connecting said member with said operating rod and a projection on said member adapted to engage said supporting structure on the extension of the frame to open said hooks and limit the forward movement of the frame.
2. In combination a bed post having a pair of brackets on the rear face thereof, said brackets being provided with opposite recesses, a frame slidable in said recesses, a plurality of pivot hooks adapted to be opened at right angles to said frame or folded between the upper and lower members thereof, downwardly projecting limits to limit the inward movement of said hooks when said hooks are closed, means to limit the opening movement of said hooks and a pair of spaced wires having angularly projecting ends secured to the inner faces of the frame members whereby said wires are spaced from each other and from the frame members, a block having eyes slidable on said wires, an operating rod pivotally connected with the forward end of said block and with said hooks, said block being provided with a projection adapted to'contact the inner edge of said post, and means to limit the movement of said frame in said recesses.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
