Description

No; 897,722. PATENTBD SEPT. 1, 1908.
A. DAY.
EXERGISER.
APPLIUATION FILED MAY 4, 190a.
UNITED STATES Pagans. OFFICE.
ALFRED DAY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
EXERCISER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED DAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Exerciser, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful exercising device and consists of a frame having a plurality of rollers rotatably or stationarily mounted thereon and so supported that any one can be removed and replaced, independently of the others.
It further consists of a new and novel roller.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of an exercising device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents an end view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a partial sectional view and partial elevation of a portion of the device in detached position. Fig. 4 represents a sectional view of one of the rollers.
I have found that in exercising devices it is necessary to mount the rollers so that they will rotate freely but will be laterally stationary and that the rollers are so mounted that they can be independently removed and replaced.
In the drawings, I have shown a construction for carrying out. my invention but it will be evident that changes may be made therein and other instrumentalities may be employed which will come within the scope of my invention and I do not therefore desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction as herein shown and described but desire to make such changes as may be necessary.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings. 1 designates the frame of the exercising device and consists of the front and rear uprights 2 connected by the lower side pieces 3 and the upper side pieces 4 and by cross bars 5 forming a firm and substantial frame which is preferably mounted upon rollers 6, it being noted that the front cross bar 5 is connected with the front uprights 2 at a higher point than that of the rear cross bar 5 with the rear uprights 2.
7 and. 8 designate strips which are provided with recesses 9 at suitable points adapted to Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 4, 1908.

Serial No. 430,668.
embrace or receive the cross bars 5, said recesses being situated at the front and rear portions of said strips for this purpose.
10 designates set screws which pass through suitable openings in the strips 7 and 8 and are adapted to be tightened against the cross bars 5 for firmly locking the strips 7 and S in position.
i 11 designates a plurality of slots formed in the upper face of said strips 7 and 8 and which extend at an angle and are suitably situated in order to provide journals for the rollers.
The rollers are preferably formed with the body portion 12 of wood which is cut away a portion of its length forming a shoulder 13 and around the cut-away portion is placed the rubber 14 which abuts said shoulder 13 said rubber 14 terminating a suitable distance from the end of the body 12, which end is adapted to receive a sleeve ,1 5 which firmly locks the rubber 14 in position, it be ing noted that the enlarged portion of the body 12, the rubber 14 and the sleeve 15 form a roller, of equal diameter, which prevents injury to the feet of the user.
Seated in suitable openings at opposite ends of the roller are the pins 16 which pro ject a suitable distance and are adapted to be seated in the angular slots 11 of the strips 7 and 8, whereby it will be seen that the roll ers are permitted to freely rotate but lateral movement thereof is prevented, it being noted that the ends of the body portion 12 are situated preferably close to the inner wall of the strips 7 and S to prevent improper movement of the roller.
By the construction just above described it will be seen that the user steps upon the rollers and by graspin the upper bar 4 can steady himself and immediately start the action of running, which is permitted by rotation of the rollers while injury, as above stated, is prevented by reason of the rubber facing of the rollers. At the same time, as will be understood from Fig. 3, should anything occur to any one of the rollers it can be quickly removed from its slots 11 and replaced by a new one without disturbing any of the other rollers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, a movable rigid frame, strips situated at an in cline upon said frame, and having a plurality of slots extending in said strips and rollers said rollers may be rotated but are prevented having ends seated in said slots, the upper from lateral movement.
wall of each slot extending over the end of 3. In a roller for an exercising device, a the roller therein, whereby the same are pre body portion, a shoulder thereon, rubber 15 5 vented from accidental displacement. abutting said shoulder, a sleeve adapted to 2. In a device of the character described, a hold said rubber in position, and pins proframe, strips situated at an angle upon said ecting from the ends of said roller."
frame and having a plurality of slots inclined ALFRED DAY. to the plane of the strips, means for locking Witnesses: 10 said strips in position, and'rollers having a C. D. MOVAY,
portion thereof seated in said slots, whereby J. (llVlOGLASHEN.
