I PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL c. BROWNE, OF'HOLYO'KE, MASSACHUSETTS.
s'rnrr-norstmume Dnvrcra.
' Application filed lay To all it may comem: I
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL O. Baownn,
a citizen of the United Statesof America, re-' sidin at Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and tate of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Strip- Moistening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
Thrs invention relates to improvements'in strip-moisteningdevices by which term I mean a strip of aper or clot that is gummed on one s1de an suitably mounted so that as or package of the same, the'gummed side will be automatically moistened during the draw- The ob'ects of the invention'are,'-I; To provide a device that will conveniently hold a suitable quantity, preferably a roll, of the gummed stri and so-arranged that-the opery detach a ortion. or conver'rsametime provide means for moistening the strip the detaching or drawing-operw tron, such etached pieces of the moistened other-similar flexible material for do up puctkages or articles of merchandise;
her object ofthe invention is to provide a moistenmg device that will prevent the strip from being drawn away therefrom durmg' the severing operation; and III. A still.
I further object being to so construct the moistenin device that the free end of the strip may e convenientZ-{yt same become dry er the severing operation, that is the portionbetween thecutter and the morstening device. roper, 8
fully described in the spec cation. In the drawings form ng part of this applicat1on,Figure 1 is a plan view ofithe strip moistening device clearly showing. the relatron of the thumb-nuts for varyingthefdeas copper or tin, this being s'eoured to gree of capillary attraction of" the :moisterrer. j
1g. 2 is, a vertical lon 'tudinal' sectronon the line 2-'2 Fig. 3 is a s1de elevational view of through the moiste of Fig. 1. the device showin clearly the'location of the roll package and t e' ath that the strip takes when drawn from the "roll, to. complete the severingof the same.
Referring'to the drawings in detail, a. desthe base-piece a, by means of the screws 0.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
13, 190a Serial No. 432,662.
moistened should the w ll be the bars 41 and 1', which carry the moistening Patented (jet. 6, 190a;
The roll of gummed strip is designated by cl and is rotatabl "mounted on the shaft 2 which carries a ii) cylindrical element f;
In order to place proper tension on the stri I provide alatform or arm 9 pivoted to t e casing b at which platform supports a suitable weight '71 causing the platform to,
lace suitable drag or tension on the strip uring the drawing ofi operation.
The free end of the strrp leads throu h an opening 9' in the casing b and passes un er an anti-friction roller is that is mounted in the end of an arm m which is secured to a sup-' porting case n that is attached to the basepiece a by means of the screws 0.
Within the supporting case n is located a means of the thumb-nuts t which are threa This construced through the bars q and 1'. tion permits the amount or rate of capillary attraction to be varied so that the gummed strip may be moistened more or loss during its passage across the wicks. The v lower ends of the wicks extend into the tank 1) as clearly shown in Fig.2, which contains a moistening element, as water.
' The supporting casing n. is provided on each side with a recta ar opening u' for supporting the ends of t e bars-g'and 1', as clearly shown in Fig. 3. 1 I
In order-to readily remove the tank 1) and osely mounted spool or wick, from the case n, I provide a hook v pivotedto the case n so that by simply lifting this hook the water-tank and clamping bars:
may be readily removedrom the supporting i g w eszlgnates a severmg ap aratus or knife with a serrated e ge for severing the strip, the free end of the stri being des-. ignated at x. This severing kni e is mount- 5 provide ed on the supporting casing n and theteeth of the same are practically in the same vertical plane as the outer edge" of the moisten- A roller 'y -serves to hold the strip e stri downonto the upper edge of the moiste wicks's at-all times, and es ecially duri'ng't e severing operation, so t at the strip 'is never free from themoistening wicks.
After the stri is severed the portion of the strip between t e knife w and the roller y, designated at z, may be moistened, should the same become dry from long intervals in the use of the'device, by simply folding the same down onto the outer side 2 of the wick 8, thus avoiding the Waste of any of the gummed strip, as common in these devices now in use. After the strip z has been moistened, it may be drawn forward and severed in the usual way.
What I claim, is':
1. A s'trip-moistening device having in combination with a suitably mounted roll of gummed material, a strip-moisteningelement proper comprising liquid absorbent material located in the path of the free end ofthe stri means for normally holding the free end 0t the-strip in contact with the absorbent material, means for varying the capillary attraction of the absorbent material, and means for severing the strip.
2. A strip-moistening device having in combination, a base-piece, a casing mounted thereon and provided with means for supporting a roll of gummed material, a supportmg casing mounted on the base-piece and spaced from the casing, a roller secured to t e supporting casing for directing the free end of the gummed strip when drawn from the roll, a container tank mounted in the supporting casing, absorbent material supported y the supporting casing, clamping means for varying the rate of capillary attraction of the absorbent material, a device for detach-.
ably retaining the absorbent'material in the supporting casing, and means for directing the free end of the strip into contact with the absorbent material, and a severing device for the strip, the free end of the strip being in contact with the absorbent material at a times.
