Description

tutti. gitana Letters .Patent No. 90,074, dated May 18, 1869; zmtedated Ma/y 10, 1869.
i The Schedule referred to in these Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
. ures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 represents a front or flat view of my improved gate, closed and fastened;
Figure 2, a perspective view thereof, 'with theY gate thrown open and hooked, and in which position it is intended to remain while the team is passing through;
Figure 3, a top view thereof, closed, with the gate resting against the outside of the fence; and
Figure 4, a top view thereof, also closed, but with the gate reversed endways, and resting against the inside of the fence'.
The bottom board, marked D, represents the ground, in which the posts of the fence and gate are planted.
The nature of my improvement and invention consists in the construction of a fence-gate, with a swinging, or revolving hinge-bar, A, as shown in gs. l and 2, which baris constructed with a slot, through which thegate slides, on the small roller E, as shown in iig. 1, the'bar Abeing attached to the post B, by means of the hinges, C G, on which it revolves, as shown in gs and 4., and is -so constructed as to allow the gate to pass through the slot therein, either half way back or all the way back, thereby making a sliding gate; or it can be. used as a swinging gate by rst sliding it balance on the small roller E, and will then swing half way around, and fasten itself in the hook g, as shown iin iig. 2.
From this position the gate can be closed by swing ing it either to the right or to the left, before sliding it, as may be rendered necessary from the proximity ofthe team and. wagon, growing crops, or any other cause.
The slot inthe hinge-bar A is constructed longer than the width-fof the gate; this is for the purpose of back ,to the centre, at which point it will4 elevating or lowering the gate, which is done by removing the pin om the small roller E, and the pin y, and putting them into one of the other rholes in said hinge-bar A, thereby enabling the gateto hang at any desired elevation. i
This purpose may also be attained by removing the swinginghinge-bar Afrom one set of hooks in the post B to the other, as occasion may require, in case of deep snow, Snc.
The gate, when closed, may be fastened to the post E, as shown in iig. 1, by means of a hook or a pin.
The manner of opening the gate is by first sliding it backward, until the notch o, in the upper board of the gate, as shown in fig. 1, comes on the roller E, at which point the gate will balance, then swing the gate around until the wooden hook g fastens it, as shown in g. 2.
The gate being thus constructed and hinged, relieves the post B from any leverage whatever; simply imposing upon the said post B the actual weight of the gate and fixtures, which weight being equally divided between the two hinges, presses directly downward on the post B, thereby obviating the great difculty of keeping the posts of gates perpendicular, as experienced in the old manner of'hauging swinging gates, the leverage of which is much greater than the weight thereof.
Having thus fully and minutely described my improved gate, which may be constructed either from wood or iron, and explained the manner of working the same, and set forth its utility,
What, therefore, I claim as new, and of my invention, and for which I desire Letters Patent, is-
'lhe hook g, and swinging hinge -bar A, by means of which a swinging and sliding gate may be so opened and closed as to rest, either at right angles with or against the inside or outside of the fence, when .the same is constructed for the purposes set forth and described.
