To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH W. BonoHnRfr,
` a Citizen of the United states, residing at a revoluble ring encircling the switch orar- St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a new and useful Switch, of which the following is a specification. f A
This invention relates to switch mechan isms for incandescent elect-ric lights; and it consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to produce' an efficient switch mechanism for use in connection with electric lighting means, -in
vwhich the switch mechanism is actuated lby y ranged in such relation thereto that, when `turned a proper distance, it `will cause the switch lterminals to'contact thereby completing the lighting current; and when turned .further it will permit the spring portion of -the terminals to snap out of contact with the stationary portion, thereby breaking or opening the circuit. The ring is revoluble in either direction to accomplish the switch# ing operations.
and advantaves of the invention and its construction, will be obvious from the following description thereof, reference being made to the accompanyingdrawing in which: i'
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a switch.
' socket used in connection with incandescent electric light bulbs or lamps showing my invention embodied in such mechanism. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the actuating ring in section and disclosing the spring terminal of the switch. Fig. 3 is a View -of -the lswitch mechanism, vthe insulated inclevsure being removed. to disclose the parts of the switch. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional rico', illustrating the arrangement of the actuating ring relative to the switch terminals. Fig. 5 is across sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1` Fig. 6 isa perspective viei'iY of a portion of the switch inclosed .showing a support. for the actuating ring. Ei 7 is a perspective view of the part in the switch to which one of'the wire terminals is attached and which is also the spring portion of the terminal.
The drawn-gs show the invention embodied in a switch for a single lamp or bulb,l
but it is obvious that it may, with equal etliciene Y be applied as the actuating mechanism or otherspecies of switches.
Other objects, and manifold conveniencesy The part 1 is an insulated cover which partially incloses the terminal support 2 to which the socket 3 is attached infany pre.- -ferred manner. A terminal member 4 is tion 5 to which the end of one of the wines 6 is attached. .lihev socket 3 is insulated from the member 4. The other wire 7 is connected to a member 8 which projects through a notch, or opening in the socket 3 and tenminates in suchI position that the contact point of the bulb or lamp will engage or contact "therewith when in its home or rest position The member 4,- -has a spring projection 9 which terminates adjacent to, but'normally out of contact with, the endfof thesocket 8.
minal projection 9 'is pressed against the throtwh medium of the member '8 and the bulb ccuact point Iand filament. 'The entire switch t. is constructed ls inclosed within a suitablel insulated case 10 foriobvious reasons. i
which a knob or projection'12on the terminal 9 projects, said knob being of suitable non-conducting material. A ring 13 encircles the case 10 resting n projections 14 on-saidcase and shielded from above by a ange 15 on the part'l. Vithin the inner side of the'ring 13 there'is a seriesof notches o' depressions 16 of suchsizeand depth permit the terminal 9 to remain out of conring which are` between the notches 16 are of sufficient 'elevation or dimensions so that when the ring is revolved to rub either one of'said surfaces against the knob 12 it will push the terminal 9 against the socket 3,
the ring 13 may be revolved in either direction to accomplish this switching. The 4periphery of the'y ring may be grooved or knurled, as shownin Fig. 1, for well known reasons. l l A switch mechanismof the character described is of maximum simplicity and; most easily operated. It may be grasped inany avoids the inconvenience in darkness of searching for the operating means aftern ing the socket as is necessary in that type o switches which employ keys for operating the switch.

' I am aware that there may be many variations from the combination herein illustrated and described without in the least departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. I do not restrict myself to exact parts or specific varrangement but A -What I claim and desirevto secure by Let- 1'.` A switch for electric light lamps coinprising a case, a sprino' terminal in said case, a revo uble ring encirdling said terminal and having recesses on its inner side, and an element. separate from said ring intermediate of said ring and said terminal whereby the latter .will be operated when the ring is revolved in either direction, substantially `as specified.
'member against the contact member, subi stantially as specified.
3. A switchcomprising a stationary terminal, a stationary support, a s ring terminal attached to said support, an a revoluble ring encircling said terminals and arranged to actuate the spring terminal-when rotated -1n either direction, substantially as specified;
4.- A switch for electric light lamps comprising a case, a support in said case, a
spring terminal attached to said support, a stationary terminal, a ring encircling said terminals and having a series of recesses therein, and an element detached from' said ring between said -ring and said spring terminal whereby the latter will be actuated when said ring is revolved in either direction, substantially as specified.
5I The combination with an electric light lamp socket, and a terminal spring attached to a stationary support, of a ring encircling and revoluble entirely aroundl said socket and constituting a hand-hold arranged to aetuate said terminal spring when revolved in either direction, substantially as specified.
6. A switch for electric, light lamps comprising a socket, a terminal in said socket to be in permanent contact with the contact. point of the lamp, a terminal operable to contact with the socket to complete the circuit with the lamp filament, and a ring encircling and revoluble in either direction entirely around said socket and arranged to actuate said last-named terminal as required go' omplete the circuit, substantially as specii 7. The combination with the switch hav ing a spring terminal, of a ring separate from said terminal encircling the switch and operableequal distances in either direction to make contact of the terminal to complete the circuit, substantially as specified.
8. The combination with the switch having a spring terminal, and a non-conductin element l,connected with said spring termina of a revluble ring separate from said spring terminalencircling the switch and operable in either direction a ainst said non-conducting element effective y to actuate the spring terminal to complete thel circuit, substantially as specified.
9. The combination with the lamp socke and the switch having a spring terminal, of a rin detached from the spring terminal leneirc ing andrevoluble entirely aroundl the socket in either direction, and means whereby the ring when revolved a given distance in either direction will operate said springA terminal, Asubstantially as specified.
10. The combination withV the lamp socket and the spring terminal, of a ring encircling j the socket and revoluble in either direction, and means whereby the ring when revolved a given distance in either direction will opervate said spring terminal, substantially `as specified. p
11. A switch for electric light lamps com` prising a socket, a terminal in said socket to be in permanent contact with the contact RALPH w. B'oRci'iER'r. [aa] v,
