Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2c, 1909-.
Application filed-May 18, 1908-. Serial No. 433,455.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Son ADELMAN, a citizemoithelfinited-Statespf America, and resfient of Chicago, Illinois, haveinvented a certain new and useful Improvement in a.
great extent the adjacent material, and at the same time furnish a rigid support for the wires passing therethrough.
A further object is. the production of a device that can be readily formed from a single sheet of metal without waste and at small cost.
A further object is the production of a device that is of a durable nature, and one that cannot become disarranged from its position.
These and such other objects as may here-- in after appear are attained by my device, embodiments of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure] represents a plan view of an outlet box provided. with my improved ground clamping device. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2'2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by arrows. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my ground clamp. Fig. i is a perspective view of a modified form of my device. Fig. 5 is a lan view of a blank from which the form il ustrated in Fig. 4 is made. i
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several figures of the drawing. Referring by numeral to the accompanying drawings, 6 represents an ordinary outlet box provided with a circumferential flange 7 and provided with partially punched-out portions 8 and a central 0 ening 9, and holes 10 for the insertion of be ts or screws to secure the box in place. The ground clamp proper is formed from a fiat sheet of metal 11 shown in Fig. 5, having cars 12 extendin preferably at ri ht angles therefrom, and provided with b0 t-holes 13 at its ends. The cars 12 are turned at right angles to the body of the plate 11 and the plate turned into a hers 12.
cylindricalshape: as shown in Fig 4, the upper cylindrical portion 1abeing adapted to encircle: the pipe running through the-opens ing 9. The extreme endsof the blank 11 are turned outwardly, forming lugs or flanges .1 5, the bolt-holes 13 registering with each other, through which boltsv 16 maybe secured.
In the form illustrated in Fig. 3, the clamp is shown as provided with four su porting members or ears. at right angies tot e cylindrical portion 14.. When the device is manufacturedin this form, it is simply necessary to use a rectangular blank with extending portions to form flan es 17 the lower portion of the blank being sp it and the metal turned atrightangles, forming the supporting mem- V Thesesup orting legsor ears 12 are provided with be alleles-18, by means of which bolts onr'rvets: may bepassedtherethrough and throughthe bottom of the box, holding-the ground clam securely in place.
it will be noted, by re erence to Fig. 1, that there is ordinarily space left between the flanges 17 to permit the screwing up of the bolt 16, in order to have the cylindrical member grip tightly the pipe which it surrounds, thus forming an intimate ground contact.
Between 7 the adjacent ears 12-12 are preferably provided flanges 19 at right angles to the. bottom of the cylindrical portion 14. These flanges in connection with ears rovide a-continuous flange about the base of the cylinder. Tn most cases, the openings through which the pipes extend are somewhat arger than the pipes themselves, leaving an open space about the pipe. This serves to cause drafts, and in cases of fire, gives access to the iiames between the floor s aces, and the draft will further accelerate the combustion. This circumferential flange completely closes the opening about the pipe, thus removing all danger from the above sources.
Heretoiore in the use of outlet boxes, no provision at all has been made for the securing thereof to the pipe passing through the box, but it has been necessary to cut away a considerable amount of plaster surrounding the opening in the case of completed work, and often to insert supportin timbers and cross joists in order to give a ioundation for the box. By the use of my device, however, a very little, if any, cutting is necessary, and the box can be securely held in place by 110 means of the cylindrical ripping member 14 bolted securely against t e pipe.
The device is of very simple construction,
""""*-*--same purpose without departing from the spirit of my invention.
It is deemed im ortant that the ears 12 extend a considera le distance from the end of the cylindrical ortion so as to give. a firm bearing on the out et box and that the flanges 19 be in the same plane as said ears and join a thesamecso ascto not only serve'as means for closing the opening'aroundthe pi e bit-Talfi for affording greater strength at't e point of junction of said ears with the cylindrical portion. Furthermore, it is deemed important that the said flanges and ears be in the same horizontal plane so as to be applied u on the 20 one side of the outlet box, thus avoi ing the necessity of having to clamp portions upon the side of the box opposite that upon which the cylindrical portion is located.
T I claim:
1. In a device ofthe class described, the combination with an outlet box, of a ground clamp, said round clamp comprising a split 7 cylindrical s eeve having a plurality of supporting ears at right angles thereto and' adapted to be rigidly secured to said outlet box, and provided with sup lemental flanges extending from said sleeve between said ears and in the same horizontal lane, said ears extending outwardly beyond said flanges to provide a firm extended bearing.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with an outlet box, of a ground clamp comprising a split cylindrical sleeve having its sides terminating in arallel flanges adapted to be pressed, toget er, and pro- Qd-Wi h a pifirality of supporting ears tfiding at r1ght angles to said cylinder,
adapted to be rigidly secured to said outlet box, and provided with supplemental flanges extending at right angles from said sleeve between said ears and in-the same horizontal plane, said ears extending outwardly beyond said flanges to provide afirm extended bearmg.
