IMRROVEMENT IN ATTACHING- HANDLES TO PICKS.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

,mining-pick with a holder o r handle-socket, and a clamping-screw, the several parts being constructed and arranged, with relation to each other, in the manner hereinafter described. l

In the accompanying drawings, which' form part of mypecication I 'Figure 1 is a side view of the" pick and its holder or socket, representing the pick and'socket secured to a section of a pick-handle.

Figure 2 is a sideview of the pick-holder or socket,

provided with a section of handle vand pick.

Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectiouof fig. 2.

l In the drawings, A represents thepick, which is made from a square bar of steel, which is pointed and temv pared.

-At the centre, where it is held in the holder or socket, it is provdedwith a notch or recess, sv.

The holder or socket B is made of cast-brass, and

may be made of malleable cast-iron, or other suitable material.

In the part marked e, of' the holder or socket B, is placed a clamping-screw, O,for the purpose of holding the pick A in a fixed position in the holder or socket B.

The handle D is made of wood, and may be securedv in theholder or socket B, through the medium of a wedge or other device. To remove the pick A out of the holder or socket B, it is only necessary to slacken up the clampingscrew C; and to secure the pick in its holder or socket, it is placed in the holder or socket, as shown in iig. 3, and the clamping-screw forced iirmly against the pick.

'lhe advantage of vmy improvement consists in cheapness of construction, and the facility and 'security with which the several parts may be adjusted and secured together.

I do not claim broadlya mining pick, made in several parts, for s uch device is well known.
