' A. D. MICHENER AND J. W. STEIGMEYER, OF ATTICA, OHIO Letters Patent No. 91,471, dated,l June 15, 1869.
mpnovrmnm' IncoRN-Pnows.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom lit mwy concern:
Be it known that we, A.I 1).-MIcHENnB and J. W. STEIGMEYER, of Attica, in the county of' Seneca, and in'the State of Ohio, havel invented new and useful Improvements in Corn-Plows; and do hereby declare that the following'is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a corn-plow, which will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the artA to'which our invention appertains to -make and use the same,
we will now proceed to describe its construction andf operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this, specification, and in which- Fignre l is a longitudinal vertical section;
Figure 2 is a view 4from the under side;
Figure 3 is a section showing the connection of the handle and-side-beam, and l Figure 4 is a section of the centre-beam.
A represents the centre-beam of the plow, therear end of which is curved .and bent downwards,.having at its lower end a shovel-plow, B.
The front end ofthe beam A is notched, as seen in iig. 1, and the clevis O, secured to said front end, may be placed in any of these notches, so as to act as a gauge, to regulate the depth that the plow will work.
Near the front end of the beam, on each side, is pivoted a side-beam, D, the rear ends of which are also curved and bent downwards, having shovel-plows, E E, attached'to the same.
Ou top ofthe beani A, near the curved rear end, is secured a curved plate, F, both ends of which are slotted and notched along the rear edge, as seen in lfig. 4.
To the top of the side-beams D are secured other curved plates, G G, which extend inward over the .plate F, and have each a headed bolt, a, Yon their under side, which bolt passes through the slot in the plate F.
The handles H H are pivoted to the sides of .the centre-beam A, a suitable distance in rear of the point where the side-beams D D are pivoted to the same,
and are secured by bolts between ears b b, on the upper side of the plates G G.
0n the under side of the handle H, in a groove on the same, is pivoteda bent lever, or pawl, c, one end of which is pressed upon by a spring, d, so that the other end will fit into the notches on the plate F, thus holding the handle and side-beam stationary'.`
A rod, e, connects the pawl c with a small lever, or thumb-piece, j; near the end of the handle, so that the said lever can readily be withdrawn, and the sidebeam moved outward or inwardat pleasure.
It willbe seen that this change can be el'ected by the operator in an instant, as he has hold of the handles, and it is by the movement of the handles that the side-beams and plows are moved out and in.
This plow can be converted into a single-shovel plow, by removing the side-beams, and having a notch inthe lever c, which would catch in the notches on the plate E, and hold the handle steady.
Having thus fully described our invention,`
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
- 1. Adjusting the movable side-beams of a plow, by means of the handles, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination of the adjustable side-'beam D, plate G, ears b b, and handle H, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The arrangement, on the underside of the handie H, of the pawl c, spring d, rod e, and thumb-.piece j, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
4. The combination of the centre-beam A, sidebeams D D, plates F and G, and handles H H, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as andfor the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing, we have hereunto set our hands, this 12th day of March,
. A. D. MIOHENER,
J. W. STEIGMEYER. Witnesses:
