Be it lrnown that we, ANDREW Einen and AnPAD GYURCSO, citizens of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county 1,

of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio7 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seats for Sewing-l1achinesy;` and we do de clare that the following is a lhill, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Qur invention relates to improvements in sewing machines, and the invention consists in a sewing machine having a. folding chair adjustably connected therewith, all substantially as shown and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation of a machine with the chair folded therein, and the front of the machine closed behind said chair, the chair being shown as in dotted lines as withdrawn but folded. and ready to be either unfolded or tilted into the machine. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the chair itself when open to be occupied. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional elevation of the machine cabinet or casing and the chair withdrawn and open for use. The invention as thus disclosed comprises a sewing machine cabinet or casing C provided with doors D adapted to fold from opposite sides thereof and close the cabinet behind the chair. The chair itself is comprised of two distinct main parts consisting of the metallic J1frame F and the preferably wooden seat and back B combined in one rigid part in this instance and referred to herein as the seat of the chair, with or without a back. T he said frame E is supported upon casters adapted to run upon the floor and is connected with the bottom of the cabinet at its sides by means of link L, pivoted in or by lugs or posts -2- on the said bottom and engaged by tie bolts -3- through the same at different points with a bar or strap 7 on the opposite side of the base bar 5 of said main frame. Said base bar has a longitudinal slot 4 of sufficient length to afford all the necessary in and out movement to the chair, either to occupy the same when sewing or to fold the chair and stow it away in the cabinet out of use and out of sight.

The upon the side opposite links .li and runs in the channeled wail of base bar 5, as clearly shown, and gives such support to the sliding connection between the said parts as to avoid pinching and promote easy movement of the chair upon its casters back and forth in respect to the cabinet.

The seat proper as herein referred to comprises the bach also and has metallic bars or pieces E, on its bottom and sides with short projections S and 9, front and rear, respectively, the front projection leing pivoted directly upon the front corners of frame E, and shown in this instance as somewhat longer than projections 9 at the rear. Said projections Q have elongated slots 10 horizontally in their bottoni, in which is mounted a transversely arranged rod R covered between its ends by sleeve S and having its ends projecting through said slots 10 into a curved channel or guide way 12 in each side of main frame E and which terminates at its top in an offset or recess 1% back of the 'ends of said channels 12. The said channels 12 are concentric with. the pivots 15 of the chair seat from the bottom of said channels approximately two-thirds their length, whence the said channels 12 become eccentric to the said pivot 15 to their top, so that when the supporting rod it, which runs in channels 12 at its ends, is carried upward to seat supporting position, it is pressed inward against the springs 16 behind the same in slot 10. Then as said rod reaches the ends of slots 12 it is thrown rearward by said springs onto shoulders 1li and the chair seat rests thereon at its rear. Said springs are mounted on pins 1S which pass througll holes in the ends of rod R and are supported at their ends in the wall of slot or groove 10, thus preventing endwise movement of said rod but permitting it to be moved back and forth in slots 10. The chair is thus automatically locked in raised position by the action of springs 16 and rod R` and when the seat is to be folded the person simply presses inward on the `rod ft throng-h .its sleeve S to disengage it from the shoulders 14 and it is as the parts 'are raised and tilted into the cabinet they will occupy the position shown in full lines in said figure and are folded out of the way.

Obviously, the chair thus shown may be used with. other cabinets or cases than sewing machines, and any equivalent construction of parts may be adopted without departing from the spirit of the invention.

A cabinet, a chair frame having curved c-hannels lin its sides, and links on each side thereof pivotally connecting said frame with the bottom of said cabinet, and a folding seat on said frame having pivotal front engagement therewith and sliding rear engagement in said channels on an arc with its pivot.

2. A cabinet having a bottom floor, a chair frame and extensible connections at the bottom and sides thereof provided with fixed pivots in said floor on which said frame may be tilted, and a scat pivoted in said frame and adapted to be raised and lowered therein to bring said seat on different horizontal planes when said chair frame is in its respective folded and unfolded positions.

3. The cabinet having a floor and an open front, in combination with a chair frame and links slidably connected therewith pivoted on the said floor and adapted to tilt the said frame into the cabinet over said floor, said `frame having arc shaped channels in its sides in combination with a seat having fixed pivotal connection at the front of said frame and adapted to swing downward at the rear in said channels, and means to hold the rear of the seat in raised position on said frame at the top of said channels.

4. The combination of the machine frame, the chair frame and links slidably connected vwith said chair frame and pivotally connected with said machine frame, whereby the chair frame may be adjustably set and tilted at right angles in respect to the main frame, and a chair seat pivoted upon said chair 'frame-and adapted to sustain different horizontal positions when folded and unfolded, and means adapted to lock the seat in raised position on said chair frame.

5. In chairs for sewing machines and other uses, a supporting` 'frame having curved guides in its sides and a seat pivoted on the front and top of said frame, and a spring pressed support therefor having its ends engaged in said guides and movable in respect to the seat pivot to provide locking and unlocking of said seat,

6. A chair for sewing machines and the like comprising a supporting frame provided ends of said guides adapted to support said l rod.

7. The chair substantially as described having a supporting frame and a chair seat having projections at its front pivoted on said frame and projections at its rear provided with elongated slots horizontally, a. spring pressedsupporting rod having its ends projecting through said slots and shoulders on said frame adapted to be engaged by said ends and thereby support said seat.

8. A chair frame having curved guide ways in its side running from its rear upper corners to its front and bottom, in combination with a seat provided with downward projections at its front pivoted on the front top corners of said frame and downward projections on the rear of said seat provided with horizontal slots, a rod engaged in said slots and adapted to engagesaid frame and rest said seat, and springs supported in said slots and bearing against the ends of said rod and arranged to run in said curved guideways at its end.

9. A sewing machine cabinet or the like, in combination with tiltingv supporting members having fixed pivots on the bottom and sides of said frame, a chair frame having a base portion slidably connected with said tilting members, and a seat pivoted on the front of said chair frame adapted to swing on said pivots to two different horizontal planes therein when folded and unfolded, and curved guide Ways in saidfrarne for the rear of said seat.

A cabinet having an open front, a chair frame adapted to rest on afloor and extensible connections between said frame and said cabinet having a fixed pivot in the cabinet, in combination with a seat having Xed pivots at its front in said 'frame and sliding connections with the rear of said frame.
