UNITED sTArEs PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED JAMES BARTLETT, OF WESTBUEY-ON-TRYM, ENGLAND.
BOOMERANG.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED JAMES BART- LETT, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Hillside, estbury-on-Trym, (whose post-office address is Hillside, WVestburybn-Trym, England,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Boomerangs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boomerangs and particularly to bow-shaped boomerangs ap plicable to indoor or outdoor games.
The invention has for its principal object so to shape the boomerang that its flight shall be more certain and capable of being rendered more varied in direction than is the case with boomerangs of the ordinary type, and so that the flight of the boomerang may generally be determined with precision.
The invention has also for its object so to construct these boomerangs that they shall be more durable than boomerangs of the usual construction.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a boomerang constructed according to the invention and Fig. 2 is an elevation corresponding thereto.
According to the invention I provide the central portion a of the boomerang so as to curve downwardly toward the outer edge I), and I shape or bend downwardly one of the inner edges 0 of one of the arms preferably in an oblique direction, the line of demarcation between the flat and the bent portions (1 e of the boomerangs (which latter portion is ap proximately a helix) forming an acute angle with the outer edge of the boomerang. It is to be understood that this construction is for right handed use and that boomerangs may be constructed the reverse wayfor left handed use.
According to the invention as regards the construction of the boomerang I preferably form the boomerang of two parts made of Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 25, 1907.
Patented June 22, 1909.
Serial No. 399,229.
.! any suitable wood the essential feature being that the grain of the wood runs lengthwise of the arm as the tendency to splitting of the ends of the arms is thus minimized. The joint is preferably made by gluing or otherwise fixing a strip of wood over the adjacent ends of the two arms.
In carrying out the invention as regards the method of constructing the boomerang I preferably join together two pieces of wood, the direction of the grains of which are approximately inclined at the angle required for the arms of the boomerang and the thickness of which corresponds to that of the boomerang, by means of a superposed strip of wood, the grain in which runs crosswise and which is glued or otherwise fastened to the contiguous ends of the two pieces of wood aforesaid. The boomerang is then cut out of the wood of the required size and shaped in the manner hereinbefore described. Or the boomerang may be formed of two or more superposed layers of wood having their grains running in alternate directions. In this case the superposed strip of wood is not required.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A boomerang having the central angular part curved downward at its outer edge substantially as described.
2. A boomerang having the central angular part curved downward at its outer edge, the inner edge of one of its extremities bent downward substantially as described.
3. A boomerang having the inner edge of one of its extremities turned down substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED JAMES BARTLETT.
Witnesses JOHN LEE OsBoEN, E. M. TOLERTON.
