Specification of Letterl Patent.
Patented July 20,1909.
Application filed December 21, mos. semi No. 468,607.
in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to locks for use in connection with window sashes of the vertically movable type, and the object thereof is to provide such a lock which permits of any desired adjustment of the said sashes with relation to the window and which, in
such adjustment, prevents a further 0 ening movement of either of said sashes a urther object being to provide such a lock which cannot be sprun out of locking engagement with the sashes y accident or sudden jerking movements of either sash; a further object being-to provide such a lock which perof an open sash, to any degree, but whic prevents the return thereof to the initial position; a further object being to provide positive means whereby the looking engagement is maintained, when desired, or whereby the said lock is positively held in a disengaged position, when not 1n use, and a still further object being to provide such a lock which is simple in construction and use, which is composed of few parts and readily placed in operative position, and which is very inex ensive.
My invention is ully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention, in position for use in connection with window sashes; Fig.2 is a section taken on the line 2-?2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings forming a part of. this application, I have shown a lower window sash a and an u per sash b of the vertically movable type, ragmentally, and upon the upper stile of the sash a is secured a plate 0 by means of screws 0 and 0 of equivalents, said plate having two upwardly extending side members a which, ointly, serve as a support for the operative parts of my invention, said m'de members 0 having, each, 9.
lug 0'' provided with an upwardly directed member a thereon, preferably integrally formed upon the said side members and serving as supports and guides for a late spring d upon each of the said side mem ers, on the inner sides thereof.
Passed through the two side members 0 is a shaft or bolt 6, upon which is mounted a segment ratchet e of a lengthgreater than the distance from the shaft 6 to the sash b with which'it is adapted to engage, said segment having a handle 6 whereby it may be manipulated, and being also provided with a finger e in the osition of, and bearing upon, each of the said springs d, and with plate '6 adjacent to each of the fingers e and extending beyond the corresponding spring against which it bears.
In assembling my invention, I first drop the sprin s into the positions shown, after which I orce the segment 6 111 such position that the hole therein registers with the holes in the side members 0, at which time the shaft 6 is passed therethrough and riveted or otherwise secured, and my invention is ready for mounting uponawindow sash.
The assembled lock is placed upon the I lower sash in such manner as to have the lower part ofthe segment ratchet 6 bear against the sash b, at which time the screw 0 is driven into the sash a through the plate 0, after which the segment 6 is moved into the position shown in Fig. 3-and the screw 0 put into place and the device is ready, for use.
It will be seen that the springs 03, bearing upon the fingers e, serve to hold the segment in either of two positions, engaged or ,dis-
engaged, and when in the former position upward movement of the sash a or downward movement of the sash b is impossible because of the difl'erence in centers of the segment pivot and of the segment ratchet, any attempt to move said sashes in these directions forcing the ratchet into the material of which the sash b is composed but,
if one of the sashes be open, a closing movement thereof is possible for the reason that the ratchet slides. over the sash 1) until an attempt is made to open the movable sash, at Wl'llCh time the loc again becomes operative. Y
When it is not desired to use the look, all that is necessar is to 'move the segment, by means of its andle, out of the position at will and, because of the constant tension of the springs d, neither jarring nor jerking of the sashes will move the segment from its position and the said springs are made in duplicate'in order that one shall be operative ifthe other be broken and, because of the lug members 0 and the plates 6 said springs cannot be dislodged from the operative position.
: Reserving the right to all such chan es as may suggest themselves, within the ollowing claims, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with movable sashes, a segment ratchet pivotally mounted upon one, of said sashes and adapted to engage the other sash if moved in one direction,
and means for insuring said engagement, said means serving also to hold said ratchet out of engagement, when desired.
2. In combination with movable sashes, a se ment ratchet pivoted on one-sash and a apted toengage the other if moved in one direction, springs for insuring said engagement, supports for said s rings and plates on said ratchet for ho ding said springs in position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 17th day of December 1908.
