To all whom it may concern/f.
Be it known that I, J AMES T. COWL Y, of Boston, in the county of 'Suflolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Ball-Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in linotype carriers and its object is to provide a carrier for carrying linotype between the linotype machines and the bank where the type is arranged in proper order for setting, and also to provide means for carrying copy from the copy cutter back to the operators of the type machines.
In the accompanyingdrawings which illus trate a construction embodying my inven tion, Figure l is an exteriorview of the carrier. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the carrier with the cover removed. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the carrier on the lineX-X Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line Y-Y Fig. 2 with the cover" separated from the body of the carrier.

A represents the body or shellof the carrier, the interior of which is rectangular and forms the main receptacle adapted to'receive a number of lines of type. The type is intended to restupon the spring plate E which is covered on its face with the felt F to prevent injury to the lines of type. c The spiral spring M acts upon the plate E and is held in position by the screw L and washer K, said screw L being fastened to a central pr0jection or hub O onthe inside of the shell A. The cover B is adapted to fit overthe flange P of the body or shellA and can be rotated thereon. Said cover B is held firmly thereon by means of the locking pins G whose notches N engage the inclined lips J of the cover B. The locking pins G are actuated by the flat spring H, the ends of which are mounted in the slots I. The said spring II is held in position by the screw L. Inside of the cover B is pivoted the cup G upon the screw D and it forms an auxiliary receptacle adapted to receive copy. The said cup 0 may be constructed of any yielding material such as rubber. the cup O pushing the type downward against the tension of the spring M until the type occupies the center of gravity of the said carrier. The locking pins Gr having passed through openings provided in the lips J, the cover A is then rotated causing the notchesN to ride up the inclined surface of the lips J until the stop or projection R is engaged and. the cover is securely fastened, being held by the tension of the flat spring H. The cup C, being pivoted, does not rotate with the cover A and thus the lines of type are prevented from being marred. The cup Ghaving an opening in its inner face togive access to its interior is also used for the purpose of returning copy from the type 'machinesalong with the type and also for sending copy back to the operators. It will be noticed that the body part A and the cover B respectively form larger and smaller complementary segments of a sphere. The object of this is to provide suflicient space in the larger segment for the main receptacle so that the latter will be contained entirely within the body part and located in the center of the sphere. By this construction the cover, which is of avery much smaller segment than the body part, is entirely above the linotype placed in the receptacle and can be freely turned to actuate the locking mechanism; also, when loaded the center of gravity will be at or very near the center of rotation of the carrier when the latter is propelled.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to'secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1 1. In a carrier, a hollow shell having a main receptacle, a cover for said shell, means for locking the cover and shell together, and a cup-of yielding material forming an auxiliary receptacle attached to said cover to press upon the contents of the main receptacle when the cover is closed.
2. In a carrier, a hollow shell having a main receptacle, a cover rotatable on said shell, means actuated by the turning of the cover for locking the latter to the shell, and a cup of yielding material forming an auX-. iliary receptacle pivoted in said cover to press upon the contents of the main receptacle when the cover is closed.
3. In a carrier, a hollow shell having a of the main receptacle,
said main receptacle, a cover for said shell, means for locking the cover and shell together, and a cup of yielding material forming an auxiliary receptacle attached to said cover to press upon thecontents of the main receptacle against the action of said bottom when the cover is closed.
' 4. In a carrier, a hollow shell having a main receptacle, a spring-pressed bottom for said main receptacle, a cover rotatable on said shell, means actuated by the turning of the cover for looking. the latter to the shell, and a cup of yielding material forming an auxiliary receptacle pivoted in said cover to press upon the contents of the main receptacle against the action of said bottom when the cover is-closed.
5. A carrier comprising body part and cover respectively forming larger and smaller complementary segments of a sphere said body part having the main receptacle located in the center of the sphere, a cup of yielding material in said cover to press upon the contents of the main receptacle, and means for locking the body part and cover together.
6. A carrier comprising body part and cover respectively forming larger and smaller complementary segments of 'a sphere with the cover rotatable on the body part, said body. part having the main receptacle located in the center of the sphere, a cup ofyielding material. pivoted in said cover to press upon the contents of the main receptacle, and means actuated by the turning of the cover to'lock the latter to the body part.
A carrier comprising body part and cover respectively forming arger and smaller complementary segments of a sphere with thecover rotatable on the body part, said body part having the main receptacle located in the center of the sphere, a cup of yielding material forming an auxiliary receptacle pivoted in said cover to press upon the contents and means actuated by the turning of the cover to lock the latter to the body part.
8. A carrier comprising body part and cover respectively forming larger and smaller complementary segments of a sphere, said body part having the main receptacle located in the center of the sphere, a spring-pressed plate forming the bottom for said receptacle, a cup of yielding material in said cover to press upon the contents of the'main receptacle againstthe action of said bottom, and means for locking the body part and cover together.
9. A carrier comprising body part and cover respectively forming larger and smaller complementary segments of a sphere, said body part having the main receptacle located in the center of the sphere, a spring-pressed plate forming the bottom for said receptacle, a cup of yielding material forming an auxiliary receptacle in said cover to press upon the contents of the main receptacle against the action of said bottom, and means for locking the body part and cover together.
10. A carrier comprising body part and cover respectively forming larger and smaller complementary segments of a sphere with the cover rotatable on the body part, said body part having the main receptacle located in the center of the sphere, a spring-pressed plate forming the bottom for said receptacle, yielding means forming an auxiliary receptacle pivoted in said cover to ress upon the contents of the main receptac e against the pressure of said bottom, and means actuated by the turning of the cover for locking the latter to the body part.
11. A carrier comprising body part and cover respectively forming larger and smaller complementary segments of a sphere with the cover rotatable on the body )art, said body part having a main receptac e located in the center of the sphere, locking pins longitudinally movable in the wall of the body part on opposite sides of said receptacle having notches in their outer ends, springs engaging the inner ends of said ins to press the latter inwardly, and inclined ips on said cover to engage the notches of said pins to move the latter against the action of said springs.
12. A carriercomprising body part and cover forming respectively larger and smaller complementary .segments of a sphere with the cover rota-table on the body part, said body part having a. rectangular main receptacle in the center of the sphere, a bottom plate movably mounted in said main receptacle, a spring normally pressing said plate upwardly in the receptacle, locking pins longitudinally movable in the wall of said body part on opposite sides of said main receptacle having notches in their outer ends, springs engaging the inner ends of said pins to press the latter outwardly, yielding material forming an auxiliary receptacle pivoted in said cover to press upon the contents of said main receptacle against the pressure of said plate, and inclined lips on said cover to engage the notches of said pins to move the latter against the action of the springs engaging their ends.
