JOINT-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
, Application filed June 9, 1909. Serial No. 501,065.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON W, WINTER- MUTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J oint-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to joint fastenings' and has for an object to provide means for securing together wooden or like joints by driving and without the employment of wedges, glue or other cementing material. v
A further object of the invention is to provide a device constructed of resilient sheet material having stamped-up portions formed therein adapted topermit the driving of sections of the joint together but offering resistance to return movement of such drivenparts.
With these and other objects in view,the
.invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed:
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view of the invention associated with a conventional furniture joint, it being understood, however, that the use of the invention is not limited to furniture joints. Fig. 2 is a perspective viewv of the cylindrical fastening member such as is shown in association with the chair parts of Fig. 1 and for securing a round spindle or tenon. Fig. 3 is an embodiment of the invention adapted to secure a fiat or rectangular tenon. Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the device as shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken through the embodiment shown at Fig. 3.

It is well-known that wood and like joints employing tenon'connections or the equivalents are ordinarily secured by the employment of wedges or glue, the latter being a satisfactory means for connecting 'such joints until the parts become dry or until the glue is broken by sharp rapping and the like. When either of these contingencies occur the glue ordinarily employed breaks away permitting the parts to separate. The
present invention embodies improved means for securing such parts together without the employment of glue and comprises as shown at Figs. 1 and 2 a cylinder 10 composed of resilient sheet metal having short slits cut therein and the material upon each side of the slit stamped in opposite directions as shown plainly at Hand 12, the former being supposed to be stamped inwardly and the latter outwardly. Preferably these stamped-up ramidal in ormation presenting more or less sharp points 13 both within and without the cylinder. The cylindrical fastener shown at F i s. 2 and 3 are, of course, adapted for securing together round tenon joints as the ends 14 of legs 15 or rounds 16. To enable-the rounds to be more conveniently driven one end of the cylinder is preferably made slightly larger than the other as indicated by the slit 17, so that before the fasa true cylinder but is very slightly enlarged at one end to permit the introduction of the round 14. When the end of the round isintroduced into the end of the cylinder the opposite end of the cylinder is introduced into the hole and the parts then driven together. It will also be apparent that the 'cylinder may first be introduced into the hole, and the tenon slightly tapered or rounded at the end may be driven into the fastener so positioned. In the driving, the stamped-up portions 11 and 12 are forced or compressed to ward the plane of the cylinder it being understood-that the round to be driven 1s of a diameter approximately equal to the diameter of the hole less the thicknessv of the material of the fastener.
It will be apparent that when the driving has ceased the stamped-up portions 11 and 12 will spring to some extent outwardly and the points 13embed themselves into the wood adjacent.- The reverse position o'fthe inclinations of the stamped-up portions 11 and '12 will prevent the withdrawal of the parts and the forming of the tenon of a diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the hole less the thickness of the material will prevent lateral movement thereof.
At Figs. 3, 4, and 5, the fastener is shown constructed substantially U-sha'ped as seen at 10', the stamped-up portions 11 and 12 being similar in all respects to the stampedup portions shown at Fig. 2 and provided with similar points 13. The latter form is ortions are triangular or pyintended to he used for a flat or rectangular tenon and in operation is employed exactly as the device shown at Figs. 1 and 2 is em ployed.
What I claim is 1. A joint fastener, composed of resilient sheet material having slits formed therein with the material upon opposite sides of the slits stamped in opposite directions and with oppositely directed inclinations.
2. A joint fastener comprising sheet material and with engaging members disposed upon opposite sides of the sheet having adjacent engaging faces and oppositely disposed inclinations.
3. A joint fastener composed of resilient sheet material with semipyramidal engaging portions stamped up from the sheet, the semipyramids upon opposite sides of the sheet. having their apeXes oppositely disposed.
4:. A joint fastener composed of resilient sheet material with semipyramidal engaging portions stamped up from the sheet, with the bases of semipyramids upon the opposite sides of the sheet adjacent and their apexes oppositely disposed.
.5. A joint fastener composed of resilient sheet material with similarly formed semipyramidal engaging portions stamped up from opposite sides of the sheet.
6. A oint fastening composed of resilient sheet material with similarly formed oppopyramidal engaging portions stamped up.
from opposite sides of the sheet, with the apexes of the semipyramids upon opposite sides of the sheet oppositely directed.
8. A joint fastener composed ofresilient sheet material with similarly formed semipyramidal engaging portions, stamped up from opposite sides of the sheet, with the bases of the semipyramids upon opposite sides of the sheet adjacent and their apexes oppositely disposed.
