THOMAS E. MURRAY, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
SEAL-FASTENING'.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. MURRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Seal-Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
rIhe invention relates to seal fastenings and consists in the construction of the fastening comprising a shackle and a body portion integral therewith, and a socket on said body portion wherein said shackle engages; all as more particularly recited in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure l is a perspective view of my improved seal fastening, showing in dotted lines the shackle released. Fig. 2 is a section on the line x, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line y, y, of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on the line a, e, of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 shows separately and in perspective the porcelain block or name plate.
Similar numbers of reference indicate like parts.
The entire device comprises a shackle portion l, here in strap form, and a body portion 2 of greater width. In said body portion is formed a struck up socket 3. Beyond said socket said body portion is bent backward upon itself, as shown at il, to form a wall closing said socket. The extremity of the said wall is bent over at right angles to form a flange 5, which flange enters the socket 3 and lies in contact with the end wall 6 of said socket. The upper part of said wall is reduced in width so that the flange can enter the socket. Through the flange 5 is made an opening 7 which registers with a corresponding opening in wall 6 and receives a V-shaped hook 8 formed by bending back the end of the shackle 2. `When said hook is inserted through the opening 7 into the socket 3, its extremity springs outwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, and engages with flange 5, so that the shackle cannot be withdrawn from the socket and the fastening is thus sealed.
In order to stiffen the body portion and to I prevent access to the socket by the insertion of an instrument between the parts of said body portion, I form on both of said parts struck up ribs 9 respectively disposed on opposite sides of said socket.

scriptions, or the like to the device, I may insert in an opening in the outer wall of socket 3 a shouldered block l0 of porcelain or other suitable material. Said block has its inner side beveled, as shown at l1, to permit the outward springing of the extremity of the hook 8 sufiiciently to engage the flange 5. The side flanges l2 on said block bear against the wall l of the socket.
I claim:
l. A seal fastening comprising a shackle band, a box-shaped socket on the body portion of said band at a distance from the extremity thereof and having its closing wall formed by bending back said extremity, means for securing said closing wall to said socket, and a hook on the other end of said wall of said socket and engage with the inner 'surface of said wall adjacent to said opening.
2. A seal fastening comprising a shackle band, a box-shaped socket on the bodyportion of said band at a distance from the extremity thereof and closed by bending back said extremity, a flange on said bent back portion, and a hook on the other end of said band constructed to enter registering openings in said flange and in a wall of said socket, and to engage within said socket.
3. A seal fastening comprising, a shackle band having an enlarged portion at one end, a box -shaped struck up socket thereon formed on said enlarged portion at a distance from the extremity thereof and closed by bending back said extremity, a hook formed by bending back the other end of said extremity, and longitudinal strengthening ribs formed by striking up together both parts of said bent over enlarged portion; the said hook being constructed to enter said opening in said socket and engage at its extremity with the inner surface of the wall of said socket adjacent to said opening.
4. A seal fasteningcomprising a shackle and a body portion integral therewith, a hook formed by bending back one end of said shackle, a closed socket on said body portion having a wall formed by bending i back the end of said body portion, and a flange on said wall entering said socket and in proximity to an end wall of said socket; the said flange and end wall having registerl ing openings constructed to permit entrance band constructed to enter an opening in thev of said hook into said socket and engagement of the extremity of said hook with said flange.
5. A seal fastening comprising, a shackle,
5 a body portion integral therewith, a hook formed by bending back one end of Said shackle, a socket on said body portion constructed to receive and engage said hook, and
a shouldered piece disposed in an opening in l0 one wall of said socket and bearing against the opposite wall thereof and having a channel to receive said hook after insertion in said socket.
In testimony whereo2 I have aHiXed my Signature in presence of two witnesses.
