WILLIAM CHARLES YATES, 0F COALINGA, CALIFORNIA.
SURGICAL APPLIANCE.
QTY/725.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 25, 1910.
Application filed July 12,1909. Serial No. 507,120.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM CHARLES YATES, citizen of the United States, residing at Coalinga, in the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented a new and useful Surgical Appliance, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to surgical appliances.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a hood or cover of novel construction which is especially adapted to be employed in conjunction with the gauze bag as illustrated and claimed in my former patent, No. 894,929, dated August 4, 1908.
Heretofore, in treating certain diseases of the male organ or penis, a bag of suitable construction has been placed around the same, and a suitable medicinal liquid poured in the said bag. The application thereof has caused much annoyance, as the said liquid not only stains the clothes, but often discolors the hands of the user.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hood or cover for the bag, in which means are employed for holding the same in situ, and at the same time render the cover air-tight, and thereby not only prevent the liquid from leaking and thus soiling the clothes, but also overcome quick evaporation.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a cover for the purpose described, which is provided with a means whereby the medicinal liquid can be supplied to the organ after the bag and cover have been placed in situ, and thereby eliminate all danger of the said liquid from coming in contact with the hands or clothes of the user.
In the drawings :--Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cover. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, showing the same arranged over a bag and forming a cover therefor. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the complete device.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, 4 designates a cover or shield which is formed of thin rubber or other suitable material, preferably elastic, and which is preferably tubular in shape, having one end 5 open and provided with a reinforcing rib 6, and the other end 7 closed with the exception of a small opening 8, from which extends an open-ended feed tube 9, preferably of rubber. A rubber disk 10 is arranged around the end of the tube, and is secured to the cover by cement or other suitable adhesive material, thereby forming a tight connection.
In practice, after the bag 12, as described in my former patent, is positioned on the male or 'an, and secured thereon by fastening cores 13, the cover a is placed over the said bag, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. Suitable medicinal liquid is then fed through the tube 9, the said liquid saturating the gauze bag 12. The tube 9 is then bent backward along the said bag, and a tape 14, having small tying ends 15, is wrapped around the said cover and tube, and tied in such a manner that the cover will be not only retained in site, but will be rendered airtight and consequently non-leakable.
What I claim is .A surgical appliance of the class described, comprismg an elongated elastic tubular cover having one end open and of substan tially the same diameter as the cover, the other end being closed with the (axes otion of a small opening, an open ended elastic inlet tube having one end secured to said closed end around the said opening, and communicating with the interior of said cover, said tube being capable of bending backwardly and arranged along the cover, and a fastening member for securing the cover in site and also the tube in its backward position.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signa ture in the presence of two witnesses.
WVILLIAM CHARLES YATES.
