MEANS FOR BOOKING METALLIC LEAF.
SHSLSSU.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. .22, 1910.
Application filed February 18, 1909. Serial No. 478,746.
Lawn, in the county of Providence and State I of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Means for Booking Metallic Leaf. of which the following is a weitieatiou.
It is the object ot my invention to provide gold heaters with an in'iproved means for placing the sheets ot gold leaf within the paper leaves of the book in which they are to be packed; and it cons' ts in the employ ment of a suction device for removing the sheet. of metallic leat from the pad on which it is trimmed. and in the employment of a blast of air to cause the an id sheet of metallic leaf to be transferred from the suction device onto the leaf of the book.
in the accompanying dra\\in;rs:l*igure 1 represents a side view of the improved suction device for booking metallic leaf. Fig. '2 represents an axial section of the same. Fig. 3 represents an under side view showing the perforated diaphragm. Fig. 4 represents tlfGUCtlOll taken in the line t, t, of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents a top view of the valve plug.
In the drawing, A. represents the outer casing of the suction chamber B, and C represents a thin porous or perforated diaphragm extending across the' mouth of the said chamber, the said diaphragm being preferably made of a substance like gold beaters skin, or silk, and in the case of the former substance small openings 0, a, are provided for the entrance of ai through the diaphragm into the suction chamber B. The diaphragm may be secured to the casing A of the chamber by means of a circumscribing groove in, and a ti htly drawn cord L, or otherwise. The tu le D extends a )ward from the center of the casing A, and ivides into the two tubes E and E, of which E is a suction tube and F a blowing tube. A itexible air-exhausting tube G is attached to the outer end of the suction tube E, and a flexible air-conducting tube H is attached to the outer end of the blowing tube F. The passa es between the tubes E and I and the la e D are opened and closed as desired, by means of the spring-actnated sliding valve I, the spring h of which holds the valve normally open tor the passage of air through the blowing tube as shown in Fig. 2. Now whenever the diaphragm C is placed upon an outspread sheet of gold or other metallic leaf lying upon the cutting pad of the gold heater, and the sliding valve I is pressed. inward by hearing against the )rojecting end I) of the valve plug, so that the passage between the blowing tube I and the tube D will be closed. and the passage. between the suction tube E and the tube I) opened, then the sheet of metal leat' will be sucked away from the underlying pad upon which it has been deposited and cut, and carried up against the side of the diaphragm, and there held by the force of suction. The suction device may now be. carried to the book in which the sheets of metallic leaf are to be packed, and then, by allowing the resiliency of the spring to carry the valve I outward, so as to open the passage from the blowing tube 1* into the tube 1) and close the passage from the suction tube E, the sheet of metallic leaf will be gently blown from the diaphragm C and be deposited on the leaf of the book.
The valve openings 0 and (I are made in the cylindrical valve plug e as shown in Fig. 5 and the valve is prevented from turning on its axis, by means of the pin f of the plug and the slot of the hollow arm K, the actuating spring It. bein placed over the stem z' of the plug the pin forming a suitable stop for the movement of the valve.
I claim as my invention:
In a portable device for sucking up and depositing metallic leaf, the combination of a suction chamber casing provided at its un-' der side with a diaphragm permeable by air,
means for drawing air inwardly through the diaphragm into the suction chamber, means for forcing air into the suction chamber and thence through the diaphragm, and a hand operated springnctuatcd sliding valve, having a transverse passage thcrethrough for Jplying the suction means, and a similar transverse passage therethroagh for applying the blowing means.
