have invented a new and Improved Cradle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention is an improvement in motor-actuated cradles, and has in view a cradle supported to oscillate about an approximately central vertical axis, the cradle in its preferred construction having an annular track on the under side which is arranged to be alternately engaged at opposite sides by wheels or segmental gears driven by the motor.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cradle constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the actuating motor; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4: is a section on the line 44 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is an inverted plan of the cradle; and Fig. 6 is a section through the driving shaft of the motor adjacent to the motor spring.
In the construction of my improved cradle I provide a frame consisting of a base stand 10 having supporting legs at the ends and standards 11 connected together at the top by an overhanging bar 12. Centrally of this o'verhangingbar is suspended by a bail 13, a cradle or cradle body 14, the bail having a loop or eye 15 loosely engaging over the overhanging-bar between the enlargements 16, this manner of suspending the cradle adapting it to swing a limited distance obliquely to and at each side of the frame, the movement taking place about an approximately central vertical axis.
To the under side of the cradle is centrally secured an annular track 17 having teeth at its lower edge. A motor 18 is seated on the base stand 10 underneath the cradle and has a longitudinally-arranged driving shaft 19 provided at opposite ends with wheels or segmental gears 20 arranged to engage the annular track at opposite sides in alternate order and drive the cradle in reverse directions. The motor is preferably constructed as best shown in Fig. 2, wherein it will be seen that a vertical winding stem 21 is provided with an operating crank or handle 22 accessible at the under side of the base stand 10, and a pinion 23 meshing with a gear 24 j ournaled on the driving shaft 19 and having a pawl 25 meshing with a ratchet 26, which,
as also an adjacent pinion 27, is fixed to the driving shaft. A motor spring 28 1s secured at one end to the gear 24, as best shown.

A pinion 30 meshes with the pinion 27 and is fixed to a shaft 31, the same having an adjusting nut 32 threaded thereon and operating to force a spring 33 against a collar 34;, the latter being splined on the shaft 31 and in frictional contact with a bearing in which the shaft is journaled. Thus, by adjusting the nut 32, the speed of the motor is regulated. For stopping the motor entirely, a gear or equivalent device 35 is secured to the driving shaft 19 and is adapted to be engaged by an offset arm 36 slidable through the casing and having an operating knob or member 37 at the outer side thereof. a
In the operation of the cradle, the motor is wound, this being performed without revolving the shaft 19, by reason of the ratchet connection between the motor and the gear 24. The knob 37 is then forced inwardly, allowing the driving shaftto revolve, and the segmental gear 20, in engagement with the annular track, swings the cradle obliquely to the supporting frame, and just as the last tooth of this gear leaves the track the movement of the cradle is arrested by the edges of the loop 15 striking the overhanging bar 12, and the segmental gear at the opposite side of the motor passes into engagement with the annular track and swings the cradle in the opposite direction, this operation continuing during the working of the motor.
Having thus described my invention, I 1
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination of a support, a cradle suspended from the support to oscillate about an approximately vertical axis, and a motor in driving engagement with the cradle.
2. The combination of an upright frame having a top overhanging bar, a cradle suspended on the overhanging bar to swing obliquely to the frame at each side, and a motor arranged under and in driving relation to the cradle.
3. The combination of a cradle supported to swing about an approximately Vertical axis, an annular track secured to the under side of the cradle, a motor, and Wheels driven by the motor and arranged to engage the track at opposite sides in alternate order.
4. The combination of a cradle, means supporting the cradle, adapting it to oscillate about an approximately vertical axis, a
toothed annular track secured to the under side of the cradle, a motor, and segmental gears driven by the motor and arranged to I. engage the track at opposite sides in alternate order.
