HENRY W. SIDGREAVES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FLAT-IRON-I-IANDLE COOLER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. SID- onnavns', a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flat-Iron- Handle Coolers, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to improvements in cooling devices for flat iron handles, the object being to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and which is thoroughly efficient in operation.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description progresses the invention resides in the novel construction of elements and their arrangement in operative combination as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
in the accompanying drawing there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the improvement and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device in applied position upon an ordinary water pail. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view showing the device revolved so as to bring the handle into contact with the water within the pail. Fig. 3 is a partial bottom plan view of the device. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view through one of the attaching members.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 designates an ordinary water pail which is provided with the usual upstanding ears 2 adapted for the reception of the ball or handle 3.
The numeral 4: designates an improved cooling apparatus. This apparatus is connected with the sides of the pail through the medium of suitable attaching members designated by the numeral 5. The attaching members comprise suitable brackets provided with substantially U-shaped leg portions, the outer member of which is threaded and adapted for the reception of a threaded element 6, which members bear against the outer face of the pail 1 and forces the inner leg member toward the inner face of the pail. The members 5 are also provided with upstanding ears 7 and these ears are adapted for the reception of a cross sectional cylindrical rod 8 which forms a support or trunnion for the iron holding member 9. By reference to Figs. 1 and 4: of the drawings it will be noted that the rod or trun Specification of Letters Patent.

nion 8 has one of its ends projecting a suitable distance beyond one of the bracket members 5 so as to provide a means whereby the device may be attached to pails of different sizes and it will be further noted that the said rod 8 has both of its ends provided with heads 10 which are adapted to serve as a means for retaining the brackets upon the rod when the device is not applied to the pail.
It will be noted by reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings that the rod 8 is provided adjacent one of its ends with an enlargement which is adapted to bear against the inner face of the upstanding ear 7 of one of the attaching members 5, so as to prevent the longitudinal movement of the said rod.
The iron holding device as illustrated in the several figures of the drawings comprises a wire basket forming a substantially rectangular member having one of its ends open as at 11 and its upper face provided with a longitudinally arranged passage 12 whereby the handle 13 of the iron 14 may be projected a suitable distance beyond the top of the basket. The rod 8 as well as the basket 9 is provided with a transversely arranged handle member 15, the said member being of a sufficient length to bear against the outer edge of the pail 1 and to retain the basket in a substantially horizontal position. The iron is inserted through the open face 11 of the basket 9 while its handle 13 projects through the member 12 and when the heated iron is so positioned it is merely necessary to grasp the handle 15 and rotate the basket 9 upon its trunnion 8 so as to invert the said basket and to cause the handle of the iron to be immersed in the water contained in the pail, thus providing an effective means for cooling the handle without danger of burning the hand of the user and at the same time allowing the iron proper to retain its heat.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. In combination with a pail adapted for the reception of a quantity of water, of a basket having trunnions mounted in bearings secured to the sides of the pail, a handle connected with the basket and projecting at an angle to the trunnions beyond one of the sides of the pail, the said basket having an open end and a longitudinally extending opening at its top whereby the flat iron may be inserted within the basket and its handle projected through the longitudinal opening,
substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination with a pail adapted for the reception of a quantity of water, of a basket having trunnions engaging bearings secured to the sides of the pail, a handle connected with the basket and projecting at an angle to the trunnions beyond one side of the pail, said basket comprising a rectangular member constructed of wires and being provided with an open front, and having its top provided with a longitudinally eX-' tending passage, the body of the basket being adapted for the reception of a flat iron and the longitudinal passage being adapted to provide a space through which the handle of the iron projects.
3. In combination with a pail adapted for the reception of a quantity of Water, U-
shaped bracket members for the pail, the
outer arms of said bracket members being provided with threaded retaining elements, the said brackets being also provided with projecting ears having openings, a cylindrical rod positioned within the openings of the ears, said rod having its ends provided with enlargements and the said rod being also provided with a rectangular basket member, the basket having one of its ends open and its top provided with a longitudinally extending centrally arranged slot, and a handle connected with the rear face of the basket and projecting at an angle beyond one side of the pail.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY W. SIDGREAVES. Witnesses:
