snamroo raorncrron DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 6, 1910.
Application filed November 27, 1909. Serial No. 530,208..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JENNIE E. Pnvnn, a citizen of the United States, anda resident of New York, borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have in- .vented certain new and useful Improvements in Shampoo Protection Devices, of
impervious to water and which isadapted to be fastened over the face and shoulders in such a way as to protect the upper part of the body from coming in contact with the waterand material used while shampooing, and at the same time permitting free access to be had to the hair and scalp so that the same ma be effectively cleaned without permitting t e water or material from running down the neck or into the eyes of the person; and to provide a device which is particularly adapted for womemwhose hair, owing to being long, is not only diflicult to shampoo properly but bv reason of its length after being wet is likely to soil orinjure the arments worn by the person unless proper y protected.
. Another object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient device which'may be adjusted to, suit difi'erent persons, and whichis so made that the person ma shamo0 herself or the shampooing'may e done y another person.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient means whereby the face of a person may be steamed by the use of hot towels or like means.
With these and other objects in View, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specificationfand will then be ointed out in the claim at the end of the esc ription.- A
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of one form of device ernbodyin my invention showing the same as applie when in use. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail elevation showing ,how the device is worn when it is desired to apply hot towels or similar means to the face. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation showing the body portion opened to better illustrate its constructionj Fig. 5 is a front view similar to Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary section of the hood, shield or mask portion of the device.
The device may be made entirely of rubber or of any other suitable material and may comprise a body portion 10 and a hood or mask portion 11. The body 10 has a part 12 adapted to fit about the neck of the personand said body portion is substantially semi-circular in form and is adapted to fold over the shoulders of the wearer so as to extend down the back and in front to protect the same from the water and materia. used whileshampooing the hair, and at the front,
or in any other desired location, are one or more openings 13 which may beprotected by a flap and through said openings the arms of the person are'adapted to pass when the shampooing is to be done by the person,
though in case the shampooing is done by another, the openin s or arm holes 13 need not be provided. t the rear of the neck portion 12 of the body 10 are fastening devices 14. These devices may be of the usual kind in which a button member is adapted to fitinto another member fastened to another part of the body portion and maybe of substantially the form used for gloves or other garment fastenln means, and said fastening means are a apted to properly hold the neck portion of the body about the neck andshoulders of the wearer.
The mask 11 is adapted to fit about the a face of a person, around the forehead and over the ears and is provided with fastening means, as 15 similar to the fasteners 14 and in line therewith and is adapted to properly clasp and hold the mask about i the face. The mask may have openings as 16 for the eyes in order that a person may see what is being done, and openings 17 for the mouth through, which air may passin order that the person may breathe easily, though either one of the set of openings 16 and 17 would answer for this purpose. The mask may be cemented or otherwlse held to the body 11 to revent water or liquid from passing down the same, and said mask portion has a shirred part 18 through which a string or other flexible means 18 may pass in order to adjust the mask about the face. As will be seen the mask fits close to the hair but not so as to prevent free access thereto and to the scalp, and the hair when long is adapted to pass outward over 7 the shoulders through the substantially V- shaped opening 19 formed by the mask when fastened at the rear and at the neck and in this way the hair and scalp may be properly shampooed and the hair' roperly combed and dried without at all injuring the apparel worn by the person.
The invention is shown as applied to a, person with short hair and is equally applicable for use by either man, woman or child, but is particularly adapted for women and children having long hair by reason of the difficulty of properly shampooing and drying the same.
A plurality of fastening devices 19 Figs. 1, 3 and 5, are adapted to hold a detachable member 20 thereto. This member 20 may be of rubber or other material and is provided with one member of the fastening means at or near the neck portion 21 thereof which is adapted to be held to the other member of said fastening means secured to the body 11 at or near the neck portion thereof. The member 20 may be of any desired shape and of any suitable material and is adapted to serve as means for h lding towels to the face which have been saturated with hot water, in order that the face may be properly steamed, and said member 20 serves to prevent the hands from being burned by the towels, and serves fur- .ther to hold the heat in the towels or similar means so that the same may be properly applied to the face. When the member 20 is in use, the hood or mask portion may be folded inward within the body 11, and when the towels are placed on the member 20 the said towels may be held against the face by raising the member 20 with the hands and and the scalp to be properly shampooed;
that said device may be used for various purposes; that said device serves as an effective means to protect the clothes from being injured and prevents water and the ,,material used in shampooing from passing down the face or neckor other parts of the body; that'said device is adapted to permit the person to shampoo himself as well as to have the hair shampooed by another; that said device permits the face to be steamed by the use of hot towels or the like in a more effective way than is the case with the usual method; that said device may be easily made and of various materials to adapt it for the purpose intended, and that said device is so made that it may be adjusted to suit various persons.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A device of the class described, comprising a body portion adapted to incase the shoulders of a body, said body portion terminating in an extension adapted to incase the face of the wearer, said extension being provided with a V-shaped opening, and means secured to the edge portion of said extension for varying its size.
This specification signed and witnessed this 23rd day of November A. D. 1909.
