Specification of Letters Patent.
Patent-ed'fict. i, 1910.
Application filed January 14,1910. Serial No. 538,123.
Toad whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, iilnuzirn i Bria; 'rnonn and Hermann HoRsrMArm, citizens of the United States residing ct Chicaco inth'e count ofCook and State oi Illinois have invented certain new and useful In rovements in Combined Work Bench rawers and Portable TooLChests, otwhich the following is a specification.
'Which'is arranged to be remo vably secured In a shop Where several. Worlunen are employed it is common for each worlnnan to have a chest for the tools which he "in-see,
which chest may be locked up st night to guard against theft or the tools. Such tool chestsare ordinarily awkward. and cumbersome to handle-or carry about; are in the Way of the Worlnnan if placed on his bench; and are not readily accessible if set upon the *iioor under the bench.
This invention contemplates a tool ches tothe under side of a Work bench to provide a drawer for tools and the like, and which when removed from the work bench is especially adapted for use as a case for carrying such tools from place to place.
The object of the invention to produce a tool chest Which fills the above requirements and at the same time is cheap, strong, and neat in appearance.
Inthe accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showing a tool chest embodying our invention attached to a WOIli'bQIlCh. Fig-J 2 is a transverse vertical central section through the chest and bench.
tion. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the chest in .use as a portable case.
In the embodiment herein shown the chest comprises a body portion having a bottom wall, 1 and side Walls 2'i'ornied from an integral piece of sheet metal. The end Walls 3' are, in this instance, separate from the side and bottom Walls, said end walls having flanges 4 arranged to lie adjacent the -.inner sides of the bottom and sidewalls 1 and 2.
-- the-flanges 4 on the end walls secure said end Walls firmly in plece, i Slidably mounted on the body vportion of the chest is a cover 6 having openings *7 therein adapted to receive screws 8 for securing the cover to the under side of a w 1 woru bench i 111s. shdable connection between the cover 6 and the body portion is herein shown as coingrising an outstanding flange 9 ep 'al with each of the side Walls :2, said 3 M being arrang' l to slide in runways 10 on t .6 cover 1 e runways 1i) may be formed by bending the edge portions bf the cover 6 back upon themselves the flange sliding between the bent-bacl r portions the cover, as shown.
At the inner or rear end of the cover 6 is it stop flange 11 extending downwardly tive into .ion to limit the rearward movement oi; the body portion. The cover and body port on may be locked against relae out by suitable means such as a .astening 13 and a pad A handle secured to one of the side walls 2 provides means for carrylng the vchest from place to place.
screws are inserted from the under side of the cover 6, the heads being within the chest when closed.
It willbe apparent that a tool chest constructed as above described accomplishes a ver usefulresult in that it is )ted to a l be associated with a Work bench in a posh tion which 1s st once readily accessible and is out of the worlnnans way, and also is Well adapted to be used as a portable-case. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical central secof said body portion, the chestbeing adapted to be carried by said handle when detached from the Work bench.
2. A tool chest con'iprising a body portion having flanges at the upper edges of two opposite side Walls, a cover having runways in whichsaid flanges are arranged to slide, said cover having openings therein, fastening means arrsngcd to extend through said openings and igeniovably secure said cover to the under side 01 a Work-bench, locking means at the forward end of said cover and body portion, and a handle secured to one of the side walls of the body portion and g providing means for carrying the chest when E detached from the work-bench. 3.1 In a combined workbench drawer and portable tool chest, .a drawer haringa bottom wall, end walls, and side walls, an outstanding" flange at the upper edge of each of said side walls, said bottom wall, side walls. and flanges being formed from an integral piece of sheet metal. a sheet metal cover for said drawer, said cover being adapted to be removably secured to the under side of a work bench and having runways :11 two opposite edges in which the flanges on said side walls slide, a stop flange 15 at the rear end of said cover overlying the rear end of said drawer, locking means at the forward end of said cover and drawer, and a handle fixed to one of said side-Walls and providing means for carrying the de- 20 ricewhen detached from the work bench.
