Description

W. H. GAMBLE. ATTAGHMENT FOR MATCH BOXES. YAPPLIOATION IILED szmnso, 1909.

atto'vmgp WALTER I-I. GAMBLE, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
ATTACHMENT FOR MATCH-BOXES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER H. GAMBLE, a citizen of the United States, residingat Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Match-Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to attachments adapted to be used in connection with the ordinary commercial card-board match boxes and the object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character whereby said match boxes can be readily transformed into self feeding match safes for household use.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a simple attachment of this character whereby the match boxes can be transformed into self feeding holders without mutilating or in any way changing the construction or size of the commercial pack- A. still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is entirely separate and independent of the commercial package and which consists of but a single piece of cardboard and which is adapted to be used as a retainer for holding the matches in the box portion of the carton (commercial package).
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank used to form the attachment; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the attachment folded for use as a dispensing attachment; Fig. 3 shows a sectional view of the commercial package with the attachment applied thereto and the supporting device connecting the device to the carton; Fig. 4 shows the device applied to an ordinary match box the figure being a section through the match box.
Referring more especially to the drawing,
' 1 represents the blank which, in this instance,
consists of an elongated neck 2 having an attaching aperture formed at one extremity and being connected at its other end to a rec- Specification of Letters Patent.

tangular portion 4, by a tapered intermediate portion 5. The rectangular part of the blank is adapted to form the inclined chute or platform over which the matches may be withdrawn, as is shown in Fig. 3. On each side of this rectangular portion, I provide wings 6 which have on their forward portions the locking spurs 7 adapted to engage the inner side of the cover portion 9 of the carton. A suitable tab 8 projects from the forward portion of the rectangular part and is so connected to this part that it may be readily detached, a line of perforations preferlagbly dividing the rectangular part and the ta 8.
As shown in Fig. 3, the carton consists as is usual of the box portion 10 and the cover portion 9, the former adapted to hold the matches and the latter to cover the same and prevent their accidental removal.
When the device is used as shown in Fig. 3 for forming a self feeding dispenser, the neck is folded at its juncture with the tapering portion 5 upon the line 11 and the body is folded upon the line 12 between the parts 5 and 4 and the wings are folded upon the lines 13 and 14. The neck is then inserted between the back of the box 10 and the back of the cover 9 until the aperture 3 registers with a hole punched through the back 9 at which time a fastening device 15 is passed therethrough and driven into a suitable support. The wings 6 lie on either side of the lower end of the box 10 and the bottom of this box is supported upon the tapered portion 5 with the rectangular portion 4 extending at an angle and being held in such position by the engagement of the spurs 7 with the inner front face of the cover 9. In this position, the tab 8 is preferably removed so as to prevent its interference in removing the matches from the safe, and the rear edges 17 of the wings 6 lie against the bottom of the box 10 and prevent inward movement of the wings. It will be seen that'in this position the device 15 locks the parts from movement and the spurs 7 preventing the outward movement of the platform 4, the parts cannot move in any direction until the fastening device is removed and the entire box and attachment pulled out from the cover.
In the position shown in Fig. 4 with the device used as a retainer, the tab 8 is folded down into one end of the box 10 and the wings 6 folded on either side thereof with cover 9 and thus the matches are prevented the neck extending along and over the matches within. the box. In this position, the neck is folded upon thelines 18 and 19 and passed over the opposite end of the box and underneath the same between it and the from accidentally working outof thebox 10 from either end. From theforegoing description, taken'in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
An attachment for match boxes, comprisi sorsas ing a foldable blank, a neck portion insertible between the back of the box and cover of the match box, a rectangular portion having side wings adapted to fold in and form in conjunction with the rectangular portion a self-feeding dispensing safe, an intermediate tapered portion between the rectangular and neck portions forming a rest for the bottom end of the box member of the match box, locking spurs formed at the inner upper corners of the wings of the rectangular portion to engage the inner side of the cover member of the match box, and a detachable tab formed at the edge of the rectangular portion.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of 'two subscribing witnesses.
WALTER H. GAMBLE.
