JOHN B. LOTT, 0F ANDERSON. INDIANA.
DILATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
latcntcd Mal'. 28, 1911.
Application filed February 15, mo. Serial N6. 544.116.
To all whom'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. Low, :1 citizen of the United States, resident of Anderson. in the cou'ntgpof Madison and State of Indiana, have mad certain new and useful Invention in Dilators; and. I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact dcscription of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a side View of the invention. Fig. 2 is an end View of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on the line i -3, Fig. 1. Fig. at is a similar view showingthe expander in position. Fig. 5 a secti .ial view of a modilied form of the invention. Fig. 6 is a detail view'ofthe expander with the parts thereof detached.
The invention relates to a dilator for use in expanding the rectum, and is designed for the distribution of'a medicament for the cure of piles fistula and other diseases'of the rectum. j Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
.The invention consists in the novel con- 7 .struction and combinations of parts as hereinafter setforth; V
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter a, designates the hollow dilator body, having an enlarged head 5, of a. yielding or elastic nature and made of soft rubber or other suitable material, having a number of perforations b. b, surrounding the same. At the base of the dilator is provided oppositely extending branches 0, 0, of such shape as will fit neatly in the crotch. The cavity or central bore of the dilator runs through the branches 0, c,
the body a, and the enlarged-head b, beingexpanded insai-d head as shown at (l, the Walls of the elastic head being of, proper thinness to enable them to readily contract and expand in operation.
The hollow head having been charged with themedicament, the dilator is applied,
the elastic head first contracting to allow the convenient insertion of the device and then expanding to hold it in place, the base branches 2, 0, serving as a stop to limit the inward movement of the device, and. at the same time being of such conformation as will fit neatly in the crotch and yet distributethe weight oi the body thereupon to allow the user to sit down if desired.
..\. screw plunger Z i en'iplorcd to express the clanre from the pcrl'oral ions of the headin application. When this screw plunger, is realm-ed and it. is desirtal to expand the dilator head positively, a spring expander Z, shown in Figs. 4- and (i of the tlltlWlTlgSdS utilized. This expander. which is designed to fit within the hollow dilator head, has spring ln'anches or wings m. m. designed to bear against the inner walls of the hollow head, and a central screw-threaded body n,
with which a screw stem o, has engagement.-
In 5 of the drawings shown a modification or" the invention wherein the elastic head of the dilator is provided with surface pockets or recesses j, j, from which the D'KK'l-lttlllltflt will-meltand run out upon the diseased parts, while gases from the body will be allowed passage through the cent 'al bore of the dilator and out through a perforated washer c; or in some cases a solid washer may be employed. The washer fits against a shoulder f, at the top of an enlargement g, of the central bore.
Having thus described. my invention, what I claim. as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A dilator having a hollow elastic head provided with perforations in its side walls; a body having a central bore communicating with the cavity of said head, said bore hav mg an end enlargement, and a removable plunger fitting in said bore and capable of expressing; the charge of medicament from the perforations of saidhead, said plunger having an enlarged head provided with a supplementary removable branches bearing against the insidewalls, said head to maintain the head in an expanded condition. g i
I serew-thrcaded engagement with -the.. wallsof said end enlargement of said bore, and a.
device hav' 2. A dilator having a hollow elastic head 4 provided with perforations in its side walls,
a body having a central bore communicating with the cavity of said head, a removable plunger fitting in said bore and capable of, expressing the charge of medicamentfrom the perforations of said head, said plun' er having screw-threaded engagement with e walls of said bore, to prevent escape of the medicament. and a supplementary removable device having branches bearing against from. the perforations with thefcavity of said. head, and lease 1'. A dilator having an enlarged hollow head provided with perforated Walls, a body having a central bore communicating with I the cavity of said head, and arcuate base.
l branches having oblique upper Walls of angale-1r relation to each other, capable of fitting neatly in the crotch of the user.
In testimony whereof I atlix my signature,
in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN B. LUlTil.
the inside walls of said head to maintain the head in an expanded condition.
3. A dilator having a hollow head pro, Vided with perforations in its side walls, a body having"-a""'central bore communicating branches having oblique upper Walls of an 20 angular relation to each other, and a removable plunger fitting in said bore and capable of expressing the charge of medicament of said head, said 'lunger having screw-threaded engagement with the Walls of said bore.
