Description

am swat pawl atria! S'I'MQ N -L. MADGEyOF TOLEDO, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 98,874, dated JanuarylS, 1870.
IMPROVED METALLIC ALLOY FOR PLOW-MCULD-BOARDS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SIMON L. MADGE, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Composition for Flows; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof.
The nature of this invention relates to thegombination of several metals, all of them cheap in'cost, and
common in the market, to be employed more especially in the manufacture of plows; and consists in the mixture made-of the materials, and in the proportions, as more 'fully hereinafter described.
The various kinds of soil to bev found in the United States, seem to require that plows shall be made of different materials, so that they will operate successfully in-the diii'erent soils. For instance, in a soft muck soil, a steel plow is found to operate better th'aua cast-iron one, and the latter will work well in dry or sandy soils. p
The design of 'this invention is to produce'a metal for the manufacture of mould-boards, and landsides, and other similar articles, which will clean and keep smooth in all kinds of soils.
In order to accomplish this end, I melt pig-iron, and
when in a molten state, and ready for'pouringinto'the flasks or moulds, I add to it tin and antimony, in the following proportions, to wit:
To a pound of cast-iron, I add one ounce of anti-- ceptible of a high polish, like that of steel, without its liability to rust.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is
The alloy, when made of the metals, and substantially in the proportions and for the purposes herein described.
SIMON L. MADGE. Witnesses JAS. I. DAY, R. 0. SMITH.
