MARY (l. PORTER, OF OHARLESTOW'N, MASSACHUSETTS.
lMPROVEMENT IN LADlES SAFETY-BELTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 99,347, dated February 1, 1870.
To all whom, itntlty concern/.-
Be it known that I, MARY G. Portrait, of
. Charlestown. Middlesex county, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Ladys Safety-Belt; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description .th ereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, with letters of refer-- 'encemarkedth'ereon.
The nature of my invention is that of a device for supporting and retaining in its proper position the cloth or bandage used by women atmonthly period; and it consists in fastenand in the drawing A A is a strap of cloth,
leather, or other suitable substance, made of a convenient width, whidlrstrap forms about two-thirds of the entire length of a belt made topass around the waist this portion being that which-rests upon the back.
' B is another 'strap, which forms the remaining one-third of the length of the belt. Each end of this strap fits, respectively, into a buckle, which two buckles, U C, are attached byappropriate loops to the respective ends of the strap A A, and are on the outside when the belt .is in use. v
DD" are two flaps or lapels, made preferably of cloth, though I do not confine myself to this substance alone. The figure of these is not important, but the most preferable shape is shown in the drawing, being that of onehalf of anoval,(divided by its shortest diameter,) the rounded portion being the lower part. From the straight upper end of each of the flaps proceed up, respectively, three narrow elastie bands, E E E, preferably'of shirred rubber fabric. These bands are firmly attached at. their upper ends to the respective front and back straps, A A and-B, which form the belt.
The mode of operation with my device is as follows: Placing the strap AA round the waist atthe back in such manner as that the back flap, D, comes in the center of the back 1ongitudinally, the front strap, B, is then, by
means of the buckles O C, fastened to the back strap in such manner that the front flap, D, comes exactly opposite .to the other flap-an arrangement which is greatly facilitated'by my having in the two buckles two-adjustable fastenings. The ordinary cloth or bandage used is then placed in its usual position, and the ends of the same are then drawn tight and fastened in any convenient manner (preferably by pins) to the respective front and back flaps.
In wearing the device, theela'stic straps give perfect facility of instant adjustment, particularly in the act of sittingaiown, thus giving great ease in wearing whileistill holding the bandage, which is supported by my device tight and closely to the body.
I do not confine myself to u'singthiee bands. I use any number, from one to more, though the number of three to eachffiapis best; and I prefer buckles to fasten the belt straps together; but I sometimes use buttons and button-holes, (several on each end of the front strap,) or strings instead thereof, and I sometimes use m'ore than-two buckles.
Wh at I claim herein as of my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' Attaching the supporting-flaps to the belt by means of elastic straps, all arranged as and for the purpose described.
