CLOSURE FOR RECEPTACLES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 20, 1911, Application filed December 30, 1910.
Serial No. 600,030.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SALLY Rmss, citizen of the United States of America, residing at 18 Rue Vergniaud, Bordeaux, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Glosuresfor Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an improved closure for receptacles and is designed particularly for use in connection with receptacles adapted to contain perishable articles used for food consumption.
The object of the invention is to provide a closure of simple construction which may be cheaply produced and which while being readily moved to disclose the contents of the receptacle may with equal facility be caused to close the receptacle substantially air tight.
The invention consists of the novel features and combinations of features defined by the appended claim, and more particularly hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure l is an elevational view of a receptacle having my improved form of closure applied thereto, the latter being in closed position. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of a fragment of the receptacle showing the closure open. Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of a fragment of the receptacle showing the closure open; and Fig. 4 is a rear elevational view showing the closure open.
In the drawing the invention has been shown as applied to a receptacle such as a mustard bottle 1, which near its mouth is provided with an exterior circumferential flange 2 serving in this instance to provide the main support or anchoring means for the closure. The closure proper comprises an annular metallic sleeve member 3 which is preferably shaped to substantially con-' form to the outline of the flange 2 and a shoulder member 4 which is adapted to be engaged by the lid 8 when the latter is moved to close the receptacle.
It will be noted upon reference to Fig. 2 that the portion 4 of the shoulder 4 does not rest directly on the flange 2 but there is preferably provided a tin foil membrane 5, the edges of which are turned at right angles indicated at 5 lying against the outer portion of the receptacle mouth and the flange 2, and placed between the flange 2 and the portion 4 of the shoulder is a gasket or packing ring 6 which may be made of any suitable material, such as rubber. The cover 5 is hinged to the closure at 7 and this cover is provided with a depending flange 8 forming an incomplete circle or annulus, portions of the annulus adjacent the hinge being cut away so that the annulus presents two preferably inclined edges 9, which when the cover is entirely open as shown in Fig. 2, are out of contact with the shoulder 4, or when the cover is partially closed, rest on the shoulder 4 as shown in Fig. 3.
The cover 9 and the flange 8 are preferably made of a resilient spring metal so that when the cover is pressed down against the shoulder 4, the edges 9 of the annulus will be forced apart and when the cover is completely on the shoulder 4, these edges will have a tendency to approach each other and thus retain the cover 8. on the shoulder 4 by spring tension.
It will be noted from the description and illustration that my invention provides a closure which is securely held in position on the receptacle, maintaining the contents of the latter in substantially air tight condition for a practically indefinite period.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z A closure for receptacles, comprising a sleeve member adapted to be secured to the mouth of the receptacle, said sleeve member having a shoulder projecting beyond the upper plane of the receptacle mouth the outer face of said shoulder tapering upwardly from the sleeve member, and a cover hinged to said sleeve member, said cover will have a tendency to approach each other having a resilient flange with portions thereand hold the cover tightly on the shoulder. 10
of adjacent each side of the hinge cut away In testimony whereof I have affixed my and the edges of said cover adjacent the signature in presence of two Witnesses.
hinge being inclined toward each other said SALLY REISS. flange being shaped to conform to the tapered Witnesses:
outer face of the shoulder, whereby when HENRY PHILLIPS,
said flange engages said shoulder said edges A. H. RAPP.
