MEANS FOR SUSPENDING PICTURES AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1911.
Application filed May 2, 1910. Serial No. 558,808.
To (ZZZ whom it mcy concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT COLAS, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of lVarnemiinde, in the German Empire, have invented certain Improvements in Means for Suspending Pictures and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for suspending pictures, mirrors, clocks and the like, and consists in the provision of a wall hook and an eyed suspending plate which elements are adapted to engage one another so that the suspended object is either prevented from oscillating or guided so as to always maintain its true position.
The advantage of the arrangement is that the suspended objects, without being sup ported at several places, are prevented from being displaced during a dusting operation or by the shaking of the walls owing to the forcible closing of doors and the like.
In the accompanying drawing four eX- amples are given of how the invention may be carried out, Figures 1, 2, 3 and 7 representing views of various forms of wall hooks, and Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 8, views of suspending plates to be used in each respective case.
The wall hook 5, according to Fig. 1, is provided with an arched supporting surface, the latter having one or more rows of recesses 0 adapted to receive correspondingly shaped teeth (Z fitted in the eye of the suspending plate a (Fig. 4) which is connected to the object to be suspended. By the engagement of the teeth (Z with the recesses c, a displacement of the suspended object is prevented.
If several rows of recesses c are provided, as shown, it is possible to adjust the objects at a suitable distance from the wall and to maintain them in their true position relative to the latter.
The construction shown in Figs. 3 and 6 only differs from the former in that the supporting surface of the hook 7) is made hollow, the arch of the eye in the plate a being consequently inverted.
In the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 5, the teeth Z and the recesses c are pointed and disposed so as to radiate from a common center. Moreover, the eye of the plate a is made wider than the hook and provided with more teeth than there are recesses in the latter. By this arrangement it is possible to correct the position of the suspended object should the hook happen to be turned at the insertion of the same into the wall. The latter arrangement may also be applied to the former construction in which case, however, the teeth of the plate a must be similarly arranged, 2'. 6., they must radiate from a common center.
Another arrangement is shown in Figs. 7 and 8 where the hook 6, instead of having the above described recesses, is provided with circular grooves 0 in which the suspending plate a is guided, the latter having an incision d fitting snugly around the base of the grooves. Also in this case the sus pended object is prevented from assuming a false position.
The grooves c and the incisions cl, instead of being circular, may be cut in any suitable angular shape.
Instead of having recesses in the hooks and teeth in the eyes of the plates, the position may be reversed, this having, however, the disadvantage that the plates, to allow of being recessed, must be made considerably thicker.
I claim 1. A device for suspending pictures and the like, comprising a wall hook having recesses on its supporting surface, and an eyed suspending plate adapted to be connected to the object to be suspend-ed, said plate having means for engaging the recesses in the hook so as to control the suspended object and prevent its assuming a false position, substantially as set forth.
2. A device for suspending pictures and the like, in combination, with a wall hook having a square section and having rows of recesses formed thereon, of a suspensionplate adapted to be fastened to the picture and provided with an eye having dentations thereon adapted to engage any row of said recesses, for controlling the position of the pictures with regard to the distance from the wall as well as to the vertical line, substantially as set forth.
ALBERT COLAS.
