Abstract
Carrying device at vehicles for mounting on a tow-hook (7, 8), comprising members (2, 3, 11, 12) for carrying objects and means (6, 9, 10) or attaching the carrying device to the tow-hook (7, 8). The carrying device according to the present invention is structurally simple and easy to mount. The carrying device according to the invention is characterized in that the attaching means is a pipe (6), which is pushed on the tow-ball (7). A bolt (9) extends through the pipe (6) and is used for locking the pipe (6) to the tow-hook (7, 8). The bolt (9) in mounted state of the pipe (6) on the tow-ball (7) is located beneath the horizontal cross-section of the tow-ball (7) which has the greatest diameter.
Description
Carrying device af vehicles
This invention relates to a carrying device to be mounted on the tow-hook of vehicles ,comprising members for carrying objects and means for attaching the carrying device to the tow-hook.
It is previously known to transport bicycles on vehicles by using a carrying device, which is attached to the vehicle bumper by means of bolts etc. This device, however, requires much time for mounting and, besides, is difficult to secure safely.
Another previously known carrying device, preferably for motor cycles, is attached to the tow-ball of a vehicle. This device comprises two thrust plates, which abut the tow-ball from above and below and are interconnected by bolts . This device , however, is much more complicated, from a structural point of view, than the device according to the present invention and, besides, requires more mounting time than the lastmentioned one.
The device according to the invention preferably is intended for carrying bicycles, but simultaneously also can be utilized as an additional supporting point at the transport of oblong objects, for example canoes.
The present invention, thus, has the object to produce a carrying device at vehicles which structurally is simple and also simple to mount. This object is achieved by a device, which has been given the characterizing features defined in the attached claims.
An embodiment of the invention is described in the following, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which
Fig. 1 is a front view of a carrying device according to the invention, and
Fig. 2 is a partially sectional lateral view of the carrying device according to the invention.
The carrying device 1 shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and intended, or example, for bicycles to be mounted on vehicles comprises
a U-shaped member 2, which at its free ends is formed so as to receive uprights 3, which are inserted down into legs 4 of said member 2. The uprights 3 are fixed detachably by suitable locking means, for example bolts , relative to the legs 4.
A pipe 6 attached to the lower surface of the bottom portion 5 of the member 2 has an inner diameter, which correspponds to the outer diameter, of the tow-ball 7 of the vehicle, on which the device is to be mounted. When the pipe 6 is mounted on the tow-hook, the remote end of the pipe 6 relative to the bottom portion 5 abuts the carrying portion 8 of the tow-hook.
Through all of the pipe 6 extends a bolt 9 , which is received therein in an internally threaded hole. Said bolt is provided at its projecting end with a handle 10.
As is most clearly apparent from Fig. 2, the bolt 9 meets the tow-ball 7 beneath, the horizontal cross-section with the greatest diameter of the ball. This ensures a safe locking of the pipe 6 on the tow-ball 7. It is easily understood that there is no risk for the pipe 6 to be drawn off from the tow-ball 7 when the bolt has been firmly tightened, which can be effected without using a tool.
According to the preferred embodiment shown in the Figures, the lower end of the pipe 6 abuts the carrying portion of the tow-hook, whereby the device is rigid against bending in lateral direction.
On the uprights 3 two yokes 11 are attached, for example by welding, in which yokes one or more bicycles can be suspended.
The carrying device according to the invention also comprises a roof-load carrying member 12, which comprises two uprights 13 and a carrying element 14, which interconnects the uprights 13 upwardly and has upward bent ends.
The upper ends of the uprights 3 are formed so as to receive the lower ends of the uprights 13, which preferably are provided with a stop shoulder of some kind. The uprights 13 and 3 are
fixed detachably relative to each other by suitable locking means , for example bolts.
When only bicycles are transported by means of the carrying device, the member 12 need not be mounted. In the case of any roof load, however, which is exceptionally long or heavy, it can be extremely advantageous if an additional supporting point for the roof load is svailable. Examples of such long and/or heavy roof loads are canoes, wind-surfing slabs, wood, masts etc.
The pipe 6 , which in mounted state of the device is pushed on the tow-hook, may be formed differently at its lower end in order to adapt the device to tow-hooks of different types.
The carrying device according to the invention, thus, is of extremely simple structure and also very easy to mount.
As regards the device portions carrying the object, they may be designed in many different ways without abandoning the idea of the invention. The invention, thus, can be freely varied within the scope of the attached claims.
