Abstract

Method and apparatus for aligning a lid (4) into its correct position above a package (3) before sealing. This is achieved in accordance with the invention by two photocells (10, 11) which sense the relative position between the lid (4) and a front side edge of the package (3), signals from the photocells (10, 11) causing lid aligning wheels (8, 9) to take the lid (4) into its correct position above the package before sealing.

Description

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ALIGNING LIDS IN A PACKING MACHINE
The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for aligning lids in a packing machine, through which packages such as carton trays are fed with their lids folded down, where the lid includes at least one edge flap which can be folded down against the outside of the package.
The object of the present invention is to provide a method and apparatus where the lid can be taken to its correct position above the opening of the package before the edge f lap of the l id is folded down and the pack age sealed. In accordance with the invention this is achieved by measuring the time difference with the aid of photocells between the position for the edge flap and the pos ition of a front side edge of the package when these pass the light beams associated with the photocells. Directly upstream of the photocells, seen in the conveying direction of the package, the edge flap of the lid is fed through a roller nip formed by two lid aligning wheels. The lie is correctly aligned when the bottom of the package is in line with the lid, i.e. the lid is not d isplaced relative the bottom. When the edge flap of the lid is moved into the nip between the wheels, the relative positions of the lid and said front edge side are detected by the photocells and the signals from then, subsequently cause the rotational rate of the wheels to vary such that the wheels are accelerated or retarded for reorienting the lid to its correct position above the package opening.
The invention will now be described in nore detail below with reference to the accompanying drawing, where Fig. 1 is a schematic side view of the lid aligning apparatus in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a schematic perspective view of a package, the lid of which is to be aligned, and where the lid is correctly aligned when it is in line with the front side edge of the package.
Fig. 3 is a schematic side view of the lid aligning wheels, illustrating how the edge flap of the lid is taken between the wheels and how their peripheral speed varies relative the advancing speed of the package through the machine, and
Fig. 4 illustrates how a lid aligning wheel can accelerate or retard to move the lid into the right position.
A preferred embodiment of a lid aligning apparatus 1 in accordance with the present invention is illustrated in Fig. 1, the apparatus 1 being situated in a lid sealing machine through which packages 3 are advanced with the aid of a conveyor means 2, with the lids of the packages 3 being situated in a folded-down position over the opening of the package. Each lid 4 on the packages 3 has at least one edge flap 6 which can be folded down against the outside 5 of the package 3, this flap being in the same plane as the lid 4 during the alignment of the lid before the flap is folded down and sealed against the outside 5. The lid aligning apparatus 1 includes two lid aligning wheels 8 and 9, of which one or the other or both can be driven with the aid of a suitable drive means not illustrated on the drawing. In the present case, the lower wheel 9 is actuable by a drive means for selectable rotation of the wheel. A nip 7 is formed between the wheels 8, 9 and the edge flap 6 of the lid 4 is taken throug h this nip as the package is advanced through the sealing machine. Two photocells 10, 11 are also included in the apparatus 1 and are situated d irectly after the wheels 8, 9. The photocell 10 is assigned to the lid and the other photocell 11, to the bottom of the package. The photocell 10 senses a forward edge 12 on the edge flap 6 of the lid 4 and the photocell 11 senses a forward side edge 13 on the package 3, and with the conveying speed of the package 3 through the sealing machine as a parimeter, a computer then calculates the time difference the lid and bottom pos it ions for signalling acceleration or retardation of the wheels 8, 9, to take the lid 4 to its correct position above the package opening. The following will serve as an example: An error of 0-9 mm in the relationship between the lid 4 and the forward side edge 13 of the package 3 can be rectified in either direction over a distance of 60 mm for the wheels 8, 9. For correct alignment of the lid 4, the wheels 8, 9 have the same peripheral speed as the conveyor 2 for the packages 3, e.g. 1.6-1.7 m/s.
When the lid 4 is in its correct position above the package opening, the edge flap 6, inter alia, is folded down after the package has passed through the lid al igning apparatus 1 and is sealed against the outside 5 of the package 3, whereupon the remaining flaps are folded down .
In Fig. 2 there is illustrated a package 3, where the lid 4 is directly above the package opening when the lid 4 is in line with the front side edge. How the edge flap 6 of the lid 4 is fed through the nip 7 and how the photocells 10 and 11 are affected, the time difference, plus or minus being measured, is shown in Fig, 3. At the actual moment of insertion, the peripheral speed v2 of the aligning wheel 9 is equal to the conveying speed v1 of the package. With the conveying speed v1 as a constant, and the time difference between edge 12 and side edge 13 as a parameter, a computer calculates the necessary peripheral speed increase/decrease of the wheel 9 to cancel out the time difference, i.e. to align edge 12 with side edge 13 and thereby to bring the lid 4 to the right position, as illustrated in Fig. 4.
