Abstract
A hypodermic needle (14) secured to a needle mount (15) and contained in a case (16) and a syringe (10) have a pair of oppositely handed screw connections (13, 21, 17, 18) such that the syringe (10) can be screwed onto the needle mount (15), continued rotation then unscrewing the mount (15) and needle (14) from the case (16). After use the needle (14) is returned to the case (16) by a reverse of the procedures. The screw means are preferably such that they can be made inoperable when the needle (14) is returned to the case (16) so that the needle cannot be re-used. The screw means can advantageously include at least one luer connection (21).
Description
Hypodermic needle and case assembly.
The present invention relates to hypodermic needles and associated devices.
It is usual in medical practice to use needles associated with hypodermic syringes only once. For this reason syringes and needles are usually manufactured and supplied separately. The needles are usually stored in a sterilised condition in sealed tubes. The con¬ ventional arranagements are for a syringe to be attached to a needle by a push-fit friction joint, or by some form of mating threaded portion, the needle then being withdrawn from its case, used, returned to the case, pulled apart or unscrewed from the syringe and then disposed of. This arrangement has the disadvantage that, in order to ensure sterility, the needles and cases have to be in a tight fitting relationship. An appreciable amount of pulling and pushing force has to be used in removing the needle from the case and returning it thereto. This leads to problems in that needles are frequently difficult to withdraw from the case, there is a risk of contaminating the contents of the syringe, the needle shaft can easily be damaged and there is also the risk of a user selfinjecting with potentially fatal consequences.
Patent No GB 1511259 describes a needle holder for medical syringes, vials and the like, in which a sleeve is removed from a base body by means of a screwing action. A needle holder is constrained to rotate with the sleeve by a combination of splines and channels and is carried in the base body by a screw thread arrangement of opposite hand to that between the sleeve and base body. By this means one end of a needle is caused to penetrate a closure and enter a preparation container carried by the base body. The Patent does not describe how the sleeve can be returned to protect the needle, after the needle has been used, by means of a screwing action. Indeed such a return would be difficult or impossible as it would require alignment of splines and channels to be effected simultaneously with engagement of the threads on the sleeve and the base body. One embodiment described uses saw-toothed threads on the sleeve and base body such that the sleeve can be pushed onto the base body using a high axial force. The patent does not make clear whether this is intended to facilitate manufacture or to
enable the sleeve to be returned after the needle has been used. As mentioned above the sue of high axial forces in returning a used needle to a sleeve is undesirable as being liable to cause accidents. According to the present invention a hypodermic needle and case assembly are attached together by first screw means of a first hand and the needle has means whereby it can be attached to a syringe by second screw means of a second hand, such that the needle can be prepared for use by engagement of the second screw means and relative rotation of the case and syringe until the syringe and needle are tightly attached after which further rotation unscrews the needle from the case, the case and needle after use being prepared for disposal by a reverse of this process.
Preferably the first or second screw means are so adapted that once a needle has been returned to its case it cannot be removed again. The threads may be of conventional helical form, or may be of the form known as a luer connection, in which diametrically opposite tabs on one member mate with a helical thread in a second member in such a fashion that the two members remain coaxial.
Some embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, of which:
Figure 1 shows a hypodermic syringe, needle, and needle case, Figure la is a section of a needle along line aa of 1, Figure 2 is an alternative type of needle, and Figure 3 is another alternative type of needle.
A hypodermic syringe and needle assembly (Figure 1) has a syringe portion shown generally at 10. The syringe 10 has a cylindrical body 11 containing a piston (not shown). At one end of the syringe, connected to the interior of the cylinder 11 is a tubular extension 12 surrounded by an internally helically luer threaded case 13. A needle 14 secured to a needle mount 15 is contained in a case 16 to which it is secured by means of external helical threads 17 on the needle mount 15 and interior helical threads 18 on the case 16. The needle 14 and needle mount 15 are located in position by a stop member 19. At an end 20 which extends from the case 16 the needle mount 15 has diametrically opposed Luer Tabs 21 (see also la).
In use, the syringe 10 and needle 14, 15 are introduced together such that the tube 12 is inserted into the interior of the needle mount 15. The syringe 10 is then rotated relative to the needle mount 15 until the Luer Tabs lock in the case 13. Further rotation then unscrews the needle mount 15 from the case 16. After use the needle is returned to the case 16 and detached from the syringe 10 by the reverse process, and can then be disposed of. The Luer Tabs 21 are preferably .rangible so that the needle mount 15 can be made non-re- engagable with the syringe 10.
It will be realised that a syringe user will be applying only rotational forces to the syringe 10 and case 16, and that in consequence there will be much less danger of needle 14 breakage, or of self injection occurring.
In an alternative form of the invention (Figure 2) a needle mount 15a has helically screwed sections 30, 31 these being of opposite hand. These mate with threads on the syringe 10 and case 16 (not shown in this figure).
In yet another form of the invention (Figure 3) the needle mount 15b has two sets of Luer Tabs 21a, 21b to mate with Luer threads of opposite hand on syringe 10 and Case 16 (not shown in this figure). With this embodiment of the invention the connection between needle mount 15b and case 16 is preferably such that when the needle 14 is returned to the case 16 it can be overtightened in such a way that it cannot be removed again. This can be achieved by the use of a frangible stop member 19, by having flexible luer tabs 21a on the needle mount which can be pushed beyond the stop member 19, by arranging the luer tabs 21a and threads on case 16 such that the tabs 21a can be de-railed, or by having frangible luer tabs 21a.
It will be realised that many alternative forms of connection are possible. For example the connection between the needle mount 15 and case 16 may be by means of luer connections and that between the needle mount 15 and syringe 10 by helical connections. In this embodiment non-removability can be attained by the same means as described above with reference to the Figure 3.
It will also be realised that there are many means other than those described above whereby the needle can be made non- removable. For example the length of screwed interacting sections of needle mount
15 and case 16 can be so adjusted that they can be screwed out of engagement when the needle mount 15 is returned to the case 16.

Claims
What is claimed is:
1) A hypodermic needle and case assembly having a needle (14) and case (16) attached together by first screw means (15, 17, 18, 21, 21a) of a first hand and wherein the needle has means whereby it can be attached to a syringe (10) by second screw means (15, 21, 21b, 13) of a second hand, such that the needle can be prepared for use by engagement of the second means and relative rotation of the case and syringe until the syringe and needle are tightly attached after which further rotation unscrews the needle from the case, the case and needle after use being prepared for disposal by a reverse of this process.
2) A hypodermic needle and case assembly as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the case (16) and needle (14, 15) after use can be re-united in such a way that the needle cannot again be removed from the case.
3) A hypodermic needle and case assembly as claimed in Claim 1 wherein at least the first screw means is a luer connection (21a).
4) A hypodermic needle and case assembly as claimed in Claim 3 wherein luer tabs (21a) are associated with the needle
(11, 15).
5) A hypodermic needle and case assembly as claimed in Claim 3 or Claim 4 where in the luer tabs of the first screw means are frangible such that the needle can be made non-removable from the case
6) A hypodermic needle and case assembly as claimed in Claim or Claim 4 wherein the luer tabs (21a) of the first screw means can be forced past a stop member (19) such that the needle can be made non-removable from the case.
7) A hypodermic needle and case assembly as claimed in Claim 3 or Claim 4 wherein the luer tabs (21a) can be derailed so that the needle (11) cannot be removed from the case (16).
8) A hypodermic needle and case assembly as claimed in Claim
1 wherein the second screw means is a luer (21b, 13) connection.
9) A hypodermic needle and case assembly as claimed in Claim
8 wherein luer tabs (21b) are associated with the needle (11, 15).
10) A hypodermic needle and case assembly as claimed in Claim
9 wherein the luer tabs (21b) are frangible such that the needle (11, 15) can be made non engagable with a syringe (10).
11) A hypodermic needle and case as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the first screw means includes two helical threads (30, 18).
12) A hypodermic needle and case assembly as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the two helical threads (17, 18) can be screwed out of contact to make the needle non-removable.
13) A hypodermic needle and case assembly substantially as herein described with reference to Figures 1 to 3 of the accompanying drawings.
14) A hypodermic needle and case assembly as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 12 in association with a syringe (10).
