Abstract

A heart valve prosthesis (10) which is suited for replacement of the aortic valve or mitral heart valve or any of the four valves in the heart. The invention includes a ring body portion (30) having a fluid flow bore (32) with an elliptical inner wall through which blood flows controlled by a disc occluder (44) supported between proximal and distal support struts (50, 52) having their ends attached to the metallic ring and coinciding with the curvature of the disc. The disc has a thickened outer edge (42) so that the disc allows blood flow through the opening in the ring by rotation and translation of the disc occluder, from a closed position in sealing engagement (35) around the ring body, to an open position wherein the thickened edge of the disc occluder (44) serves as a travel stop for translational movement of the occluder during operation.
