Abstract

A thin-film head (2) contains a conductor of magnetic flux similar to an annular head with two magnetic arms (6, 7), which is partially embedded in a depression (12) in a non-magnetic substrate. Each arm (6, 7) has a magnetic layer (6a and 7a, respectively), which forms a magnetic pole (P1 and P2, respectively) at a pole point (8 and 9, respectively), and a magnetic amplification layer (6b and 7b, respectively). This magnetic head should be easy to manufacture and should allow high magnetic flux densities in its conductor. To this end, only the amplification layer (6b) in the magnetic arm (6) facing the substrate (12) is arranged in the depression (12) in the substrate (3) in such a way that its surface (13) lies in the same plane (E) as the surface (14) of the substrate.

Dünnfilm-Magnetkopf mit in einem Substrat versenkten Teilen sowie Verfahren zu dessen HerstellungThin film magnetic head with parts buried in a substrate and method for its production
The invention relates to a thin-film magnetic head with a magnetic guide body guiding the magnetic flux and applied to a non-magnetic substrate, which has a ring-head-like shape, is partially recessed in a recess of the substrate and contains two magnetic legs, each have at least one magnetic layer which forms a magnetic pole on a pole tip facing a recording medium to be magnetized,

The outside of the area of their pole tips are each provided with a magnetic reinforcement layer, these reinforcement layers forming corresponding parts of the outer sides of the magnetic guide body.
A correspondingly designed thin-film magnetic head can be found in EP-B-0 185 289. The invention further relates to a method for producing such a magnetic head.
The principle of a longitudinal (horizontal) or vertical (vertical) magnetization for storing data in corresponding, in particular disk-shaped recording media is generally known. Thin-film magnetic heads designed for these types of magnetization generally have a guide body made of magnetizable material for guiding the magnetic flux, which can have a shape similar to a ring shape with two magnetic legs. These magnetic legs form magnetic poles on their pole tips facing the recording medium, which are arranged one behind the other as seen in the relative direction of movement of the head with respect to the recording medium, a narrow gap being formed between the pole tips. Outside the area of these pole tips, the magnetic legs delimit a space which is correspondingly widened due to an increase in the mutual distance between the magnetic legs. The conductors extend through at least one read / write coil winding through this intermediate space.
The magnetic head known from the aforementioned EP-B also shows a corresponding structure. In addition to at least one magnetic layer forming the respective magnetic pole, each of the magnetic legs of this magnetic head also contains a magnetic reinforcement layer outside the region of the pole tip. These reinforcement layers, which serve to improve the flow guidance or to reduce the magnetic resistance in the magnetic guide body, are arranged in such a way that they largely form the outer sides of the magnetic guide body. This guide body should be constructed on the back of a non-magnetic substrate using thin-film technology, the substrate being designed as a missile so that it can be guided aerodynamically over a plate-shaped recording medium. The substrate of the known magnetic head is provided with a recess in which at least for the most part one of the magnetic legs with its reinforcement layer and the windings of the read / write coil 3 winding are arranged. With such a structure, however, the lithography of the parts arranged in the recess of the substrate is relatively complex. In addition, the guidance of the magnetic flux in the magnetic leg extending through the recess of the substrate and thus correspondingly shaped is also made more difficult.
The object of the present invention is therefore to design the magnetic head of the type mentioned at the outset in such a way that its production is further simplified and the magnetic leg facing the substrate can conduct a relatively large magnetic flux.
Diese Aufgabe wird erfindungsgemäß dadurch gelöst, daß ledig- lieh die Verstärkungsschicht des dem Substrat zugewandtenThis object is achieved according to the invention in that only the reinforcing layer of the substrate facing the
Magnet leg is arranged in such a recess of the substrate that its one surface lies in one plane with the surface of the substrate.
The advantages associated with this configuration of the magnetic head are to be seen in particular in the fact that the magnetic leg facing the substrate can be made flat, the reinforcing layer sunk in the substrate being able to project relatively close to the pole tip of the magnetic leg. This has the consequence that this leg is able to conduct a relatively large magnetic flux. This state of affairs is particularly advantageous if this magnetic leg alone is to be used for a write function based on the principle of vertical magnetization, ie if the magnetic head is to be written in a known manner as a so-called single-pole head (see, for example, EP-A -0 232 505). Furthermore, due to the arrangement of the reinforcement layer on the outer sides of the magnetic guide body, it is avoided that part of these reinforcement layers of the magnetic flux unused, ie can pass outside of the gap to the other magnetic leg.
A method for producing a thin-film magnetic head designed according to the invention is advantageously characterized in that a layer of the magnetic material of the reinforcement layer is first deposited on the substrate provided with the depression, in which case the magnetic layer A corresponding depression is formed that an auxiliary layer largely filling this depression is subsequently formed in the depression of the magnetic layer, only narrow channel-like trenches remaining between the magnetic layer and the auxiliary layer, so that this structure is then provided with a leveling layer. that the leveling layer and the auxiliary layer as well as the part of the magnetic layer protruding from the recess of the substrate are etched to the level common to the substrate and the magnetic layer or the reinforcing layer, and finally to this he level of the magnetic head is completed in a manner known per se. This method has the particular advantage that even with a relatively large expansion of the depression in the substrate, it is possible to smoothly level and fill this depression with the material of the reinforcing layer.
Advantageous refinements of the magnetic head according to the invention and the method for its production can be found in the individual subclaims.
To further explain the invention, reference is made below to the drawing, in which FIG. 1 schematically illustrates an embodiment of a magnetic head according to the invention. Individual processes are shown in FIGS. steps for producing a reinforcing layer in a substrate of such a magnetic head are indicated. Corresponding parts are provided with the same reference symbols in the figures.
In the case of the thin-film magnetic head for writing and reading, which is only partially illustrated as a longitudinal section in FIG. 1, known ring head-like embodiments with layer-by-layer construction for the principle of a longitudinal (horizontal) or in particular a vertical (vertical) magnet are used tization. The head, generally designated 2 in the figure, is formed in thin-film technology on a substrate 3, which can be designed as a missile in a known manner and is not further developed in the figure. A body 3a made of TiC-Al 2 O is advantageously used as the substrate. Since this material is electrically conductive due to the TiC component, the substrate 3 must additionally be provided with an A1 2 O 3 layer for insulation. Instead of TiC, A1N can in particular also be used as the substrate material. The substrate 3 and thus the magnetic head 2 are to be guided aerodynamically along a track at a low flight altitude relative to a recording medium known per se and corresponding to the intended magnetization principle. This direction of movement, relative to the head, of the recording medium rotating, for example, underneath this is indicated by an arrowed line denoted by v.
The magnetic head 2 has a magnetic guide body 5 that guides the magnetic flux and has two magnetic legs 6 and 7. These magnetic legs each contain at least one magnetic layer 6a or 7a, which each form a magnetic pole P1 or P2 on their pole tips 8 and 9 facing the recording medium. An air gap 10 between the two poles P1 and P2 is advantageously small longitudinal, ie pointing in the direction of movement g of less than 1 μm. Each of the magnetic legs 6 and 7 is reinforced outside of the areas occupied by the pole tips 8 and 9 with an additional, relatively thick magnetic layer 6b and 7b. These additional layers advantageously serve to reduce the magnetic resistance in the magnetic guide body 5 and are also used for any desired asymmetry of the field profile of the writing field of the head. The two reinforcement layers 6b and 7b are advantageously arranged in such a way that they lie on the outer sides of the magnetic guide body 5.
As can also be seen from the figure, according to the invention, the reinforcement layer 6b, which is assigned to the magnetic leg 6 which is leading with respect to the direction of movement v, should be located in a trough-like depression 12. This depression is incorporated into the insulating cover layer 3b of the substrate 3 and filled with the reinforcement layer 6b in such a way that the surface 13 of the reinforcement layer 6b facing the magnetic layer 6a together with the non-recessed surface 14 of the cover layer 3b lies in a common plane E.
In a central area of the ring head-like magnetic guide body 5, the distance between the two magnetic legs 6 and 7 is widened with respect to the gap width g, in that the magnetic leg 7 rearward (trailing) with respect to the direction of movement v in this area to a larger distance w with respect to the front , just formed and the substrate 3 facing magnetic leg 6 leads. Outside of this extended guide body area, the magnetic leg 7 is attached to the magnetic leg 6 in a known manner on the side of the guide body facing away from the recording medium, so that then the ring head-like shape of the guide body 5 results. The space 16 between the two magnetic legs 6 and 7 in the wider guide body region extends at least one single or multi-layer coil winding 17 with which both the writing and the reading function can be performed. If necessary, separate windings must also be provided for this. The entire magnetic guide body 5 is covered on its outside with a hard, non-magnetic protective layer 18, for example made of A1 2 0.
Anhand der schematischen Längsschnitte der Figuren 2 bis 8 wer¬ den nachfolgend einzelne Schritte zur Herstellung des in Figur 1 veranschaulichten Magnetkopfes näher erläutert:Individual steps for producing the magnetic head illustrated in FIG. 1 are explained in more detail below with reference to the schematic longitudinal sections in FIGS. 2 to 8:
In order to form the trough-like depression 12 in the substrate 3 or in its insulating cover layer 3b, a layer 20 of a photoresist is deposited on the surface 14 of the substrate according to known photolithographic methods outside the area of the depression, as shown in FIG. After exposure and development of the photoresist layer 20, the entire surface of the substrate coated in this way is subjected to ion beam etching. The etching process is carried out until the lacquer layer 20 has been completely removed. The substrate 3 in the non-coated area is also etched down to a depth t of, for example, 2 μm to form the desired depression 12 (FIG. 3).
Thereafter, the surface of the substrate structured in this way is at least in the region of the depression 12 and in the adjacent edge regions of the non-recessed surface 14, for example by means of a sputtering process with a layer 22 made of the (soft) magnetic material of the reinforcing layer 6b to be produced, for example made of a NiFe alloy pulled (Figure 4). This layer 22 thus also extends through the region of the trough-like depression 12 and has approximately a structuring corresponding to the structuring of the substrate. The thickness d of the magnetic layer 22 in the region of the depression 12 should correspond at least approximately to the depth t of the depression. If necessary, somewhat thicker layers can also be provided.
Since the trough-like depression 12 and thus also the corresponding depression 12 'in the magnetic layer 22 have a relatively large maximum longitudinal and / or transverse extent a of, for example, about 200 μm, a flattening of the surface of the layer 22 is known Leveling procedures are not readily possible. Because of the size of the extent a, these methods would lead to undesired subsidence of the surface in the region of the depression 12 '. According to FIG. 5, it is therefore provided that the depression 12 'is filled as far as possible with an auxiliary layer 23 made of a photoresist by means of photolithography. The thickness of this auxiliary layer is set so that its surface lies together with the free surface of the magnetic layer 22 in a common intermediate plane e. When the auxiliary layer 23 is applied, however, it cannot be avoided that narrow groove-like trenches 2 4 remain in the region of the edges of the recess 12 'between the auxiliary layer 23 and the magnetic layer 22.
Such trenches 24 with a width b of only a few micrometers can be leveled in a manner known per se. 6, the entire free surface of the magnetic layer 22 and the auxiliary layer 23 is leveled for this purpose by means of a polymer layer 25, for example with a photoresist. Here, the narrow trenches 24 are also filled with the material of the leveling layer 25 without any noticeable Dips in the surface of the layer 25 occur in the region of these trenches.
Then the plastic material of the leveling layer 25 is etched back up to the common intermediate plane e of the surface of the magnetic layer 22 and the auxiliary layer 23, the trenches 24 remaining filled with the material of the leveling layer (FIG. 7). Reactive ion beam etching with oxygen ions in argon or reactive ion etching with oxygen are particularly suitable as the etching method.
Finally, by means of a further etching process, both the material of the magnetic layer 22 projecting beyond the depression 12 in the substrate 3 and the material of the auxiliary layer 23 and the material located in the trenches 24 are removed up to the surface E of the substrate 3. In this case, an approximately equal etching rate is advantageously provided for the magnetic material of layer 22 and for the plastic material or materials of auxiliary layer 23 and trenches 24. Reactive ion beam etching with nitrogen ions in argon is particularly suitable for this.
At the end of this etching process, there is then a substrate 3, the depression 12 of which is completely filled up to the common plane E with a magnetic material which forms the reinforcement layer 6b (FIG. 8). The remaining structure of the magnetic head according to the invention is then completed in a known manner on level E using thin-film technology.
