Abstract

Process for reversibly fastening webs of large surface area to backings, in which the webs are firmly bonded or welded to the backing. The webs, which are coated with a hot-melt adhesive or heat-sealable material in which finely divided electrically conductive material is incorporated, are irradiated with electromagnetic waves with a wavelength in the range 2 to 300 GHz. This process is reversible, i.e., the fastening can be undone by further irradiation. The process can be used to fasten floor coverings to floors or roof panels to roofs, for surfacing or repairing roads with tar and bitumen and in dam building to construct watertight walls. Also described are devices for implementing the process, which consist of a mobile frame (1) with one or more pressure rollers (8), a microwave generator (2), a hollow conductor (3) which bundles the waves and directs the beams through a radiation chamber (4) onto a backing (5). This device can also be designed so that the radiation chamber (4) is replaced by metal or metal alloy guide rails (6) which project from the hollow conductor (3) and open into irradiation channels (7) arranged parallel to the backing.
