Abstract
A suction cleaner head is of elongate substantially rectangular shape and comprises a body (1) having a first face (2) and a second face (3) adjacent to the first face with a recess (4) formed in and interrupting both faces. A resilient strip (5) contacts and is coterminous with the first face of the body (1) except where an elongate edge of the strip (5) protrudes beyond the second face of the body (at 6). A back plate (7) is removably secured to the body (1) with the resilient strip (5) sandwiched therebetween. The back plate (7) is substantially coterminous with the body (1) so that the said elongate edge of the strip (5) also protrudes beyond the back plate (7). The recess (4) in the first and second faces of the body (1) defines, with the strip (5) in contact with the said first face, a slot opening into the second face adjacent to the protruding edge of the strip (5). The strip (5) and the back plate (7) have mutually aligned elongate openings (8, 9) and communicate with the recess (4). The opening (9) in the back plate (7) also communicates on its free face with a connection (10) for removable attachment to a suction source.
Description
SUCTION CLEANER HEAD
Description
This invention relates to a suction cleaner head. The invention is primarily intended for use on flat surfaces for any liquid or granular substance which can pool and flow as a liquid.
According to the invention there is provided a suction cleaner head of elongate substantially rectangular shape and comprising a body having a first face and a second face adjacent to the first face with a recess formed in and interrupting both faces, a resilient strip contacting and coterminous with the first face of the body except where an elongate edge of the strip protrudes beyond the second face of the body, and a back plate removably secured to the body with the resilient strip sandwiched therebetween, the back plate being substantially coterminous with the body so that the said elongate edge of the strip also protrudes beyond the back plate, the recess in the first and second faces of the body defining, with the strip in contact with the said first face, a slot opening into the second face adjacent the protruding edge of the strip, the strip and the back plate having mutually aligned elongate openings therein and communicating with the recess, and the opening in the back plate also communicating on its free face with a connection for removable attachment to a suction source.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig 1 is a sectional side view of a suction cleaner head; and
Fig 2 is a section on line II - II in Fig 1.
In the drawing, a suction cleaner head is shown of elongate substantially rectangular shape. The head
comprises a body 1 having a first face 2 and a second face 3 adjacent to the face 2 and constituting the bottom face in use. A recess 4 is formed in and interrupts both faces 2 and 3. The recess 4 is of a fish-tail shape tapering upwards from the face 3 in Fig 1. A resilient strip 5 contacts and is coterminous with the face 2 of the body 1 and protrudes beyond the face 3 to form a blade portion 6. A back plate 7 is removable secured to the body 1 with the strip 5 sandwiched therebetween. The back plate is substantially coterminous with the body 1 so that the blade 6 also protrudes beyond the back plate 7. The recess 4 defines, with the strip 5 in contact with the face 2, a slot opening into the face 3 adjacent the blade 6. The strip 5 and the back plate 7 have mutually aligned openings 8 and 9 which communicate with fish-tail slot 4 at its root. The opening 9 also communicates on the free face of the back plate 7 with a connection 1 for removable attachment to a suction source via a wand and a flexible hose (not shown) . The internal form of connection 10 is such as to change from an elongate shape at the back plate 7 to a circular shape remote from the back plate 7.
In use, the head is pushed over a flat surface from which a liquid or granular substance is to be removed. The movement of the head over the surface forms a pool in the substance forward of the blade 6. The pool seals-off the opening on the face 3 of the body 1 to the slot 4 and suction applied to the connection 10 withdraws the substance through the slot 4 and openings 8 and 9. The slot 4, openings 8 and 9 and the interior of the connection 10 together constitute a venturi which aids the withdrawal of the substance.
Claims
1. A suction cleaner head of elongate substantially rectangular shape and comprising a body having a first face and a second face adjacent to the first face with a recess formed in and interrupting both faces, a resilient strip contacting and coterminous with the first face of the body except where an elongate edge of the strip protrudes beyond the second face of the body, and a back plate removably secured to the body with the resilient strip sandwiched therebetween, the back plate being substantially coterminous with the body so that the said elongate edge of the strip also protrudes beyond the back plate, the recess in the first and second faces of the body defining, with the strip in contact with the said first face, a slot opening into the second face adjacent the protruding edge of the strip, the strip and the back plate having mutually aligned elongate openings therein and communicating within the recess, and the opening in the back plate also communicating on its free face with a connection for removable attachment to a suction source.
2. A suction cleaner head accordingly to claims l, wherein the slot, the mutually aligned openings and the interior of the connection together constitute a venturi.
