Abstract

Rigid air-cushion seals in surface action vessels comprising rigid flaps (3av, 3ar) retained against the hull by an air-cushion chamber (11av, 11ar) for correcting the trim of the vessel and continuously sealing the air cushion to the waves. The air-cushioned seals of the invention are intended in particular for high-performance surface action vessels.

Description

Rigid air suspension closures for surface effect vessels.
The present invention relates to rigid air suspension closures for surface effect ships.
Traditional surface effect vessels are very sensitive to mass balance. Indeed, variations in the center of gravity cause significant changes in attitude which seriously affect performance. In addition, above the chop, the air leaks under the skirts, particularly the front skirts, cause rapid pressure losses of the air cushion and consequently the sudden fall of the ship to the great detriment of the structure and the comfort of passengers. Finally, in heavy weather, flexible skirts resist the impact of waves badly.
The object of the present invention is to remedy these drawbacks by rigid closures, offering good resistance to impacts, provided with an adjustable pneumatic suspension system which allows them, on the one hand to follow the undulations of the waves, and on the other hand to correct the attitude of the ship according to the centering of the masses.
According to the invention, between the side keels, the air cushion is closed at the front and at the rear by rigid rectangular flaps, the upper front edge of which is fixed to the hull of the ship by a hinge, and of which the rotation is dependent on a deformable chamber maintained under air pressure in an autonomous manner. It is the air suspension chamber.
According to a preferred embodiment the rear edge of the flap is retained at the hull by an articulated panel covering the entire width between the interior walls of the side pins. The room is made up of the space under the hull between the interior walls of the side skittles, between the flap and the hinged panel which serves as its suspension arm. The edges of the shutter and of the panel which come flush with the inner walls of the side pins are provided with sealing tongues which are pressed against these walls under the effect of pressure. The pressurization in the chamber deploys the articulated panel and maintains the flap in a position of equilibrium with the external forces including those exerted by the hydrostatic and dynamic lift. The variation of the pressure in the fore and aft chambers modifies the position of the flaps and makes it possible to adjust the trim of the ship. On the chop, the chamber compresses on a ridge or relaxes on a hollow, lets the shutter constantly follow the wave with a minimum of air cushion leakage.
According to a first variant, the closures are made up of multiple elements juxtaposed one beside the other and provided at their common edges with tongues which are pressed together by pressure and seal the air cushion.

In FIGS. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, the ship comprises between the side keels (2), an air cushion (10), closed at the front and at the rear by rigid rectangular flaps (3av ) and (3ar), the upper front edge of which is fixed to the hull (1) of the ship by a hinge (5'av) and (3'ar). The flaps are retained in the hull by the panels (Aav) and (4ar) articulated around the hinges (5av) and (5ar) covering the entire width between the interior walls of the side keels. At the front and at the rear, the air suspension chamber (11) and (12) is formed by the space, between the hull and the side pins, between the flap and the articulated panel which serves as its arm suspension. The pressure in the chambers is maintained autonomously by the regulation valves (6av) and (6ar) from the compression system (7). The edges of the flap and of the panel which come flush with the walls of the side pins are provided with sealing tongues (8) which are pressed against these walls under the effect of pressure. Likewise, the hinges are provided with sealing tongues (8).
FIG. 6 shows a variant of the closures which consist of multiple elements (3 "av) juxtaposed one beside the other and provided at their common edges with tabs (8") which are pressed together by pressure and seal the air cushion.
The air suspension closures according to the invention are particularly intended for high performance surface effect vessels.
