Abstract
In vacuum cleaners for household use dust bags manufactured from filter paper are employed, which are attached to a collar made from cardboard or plastic and being provided with an opening for the vacuum air. The forces acting upon the collar in many cases result in sealing problems. A great number of different dust bags are present on the market. A basic feature of the invention is that the dust bag is removably attached to the vacuum chamber or to a separate mounting plate by means of a connection consisting of an inner raised edge and an outer raised edge. The mounting plate consists of a rigid material and replaces presently used collars to which dust bags are attached. The invention provides advantages by new vacuum cleaners, since the seals become redundant. The number of different types of dust bags on the market may be reduced.
Description
FASTENING DEVICE FOR A DUST BAG IN A VACUUM CLEANER
This invention relates to a device of the kind described in the preamble of claim 1.
In vacuum cleaners for home use the dust is collected in dust bags made of filter paper, which for most vacuum cleaners on the market are fixed to a collar made of cardboard or plastic. This collar is guided and fixed in position in the vacuum cleaner by means of a holder or an edge bead of the vacuum chamber or vacuum cleaner housing.
The forces caused by the vacuum on the collar require that the collar is relatively rigid in order to effectively seal for the vacuum air between the collar and the vacuum chamber. In order to provide this effective sealing the collar must be seated with a relatively large force against the elastic sealing ring, which for some vacuum cleaners endangers the sealing capacity or durability of the cardboard or plastic collar. In order to achieve a good sealing some vacuum cleaner dust bags are provided with a sealing membrane covering the opening for the inlet vacuum air and being penetrated by an inlet tube provided in the vacuum cleaner housing, as the dust bag is mounted. The holder is complicated and the fixation by means of an edge bead requires a relatively large cardboard or plastic collar. There are many designs of vacuum cleaners on the market and although the dimen¬ sions and configurations of the dust bags are generally rather alike, most of the vacuum cleaners have specifically designed cardboard or plastic collars on which the dust bag is fixed.
The object of the present invention is to improve the fastening device for the vacuum cleaner dust bags and to reduce the costs therefore, and also to provide for a more efficient sealing of the vacuum air as well as to make it possible to reduce the number of different vacuum cleaner dust bags on the market, since in many cases one and the same dust bag may be employed for different vacuum cleaners. For new vacuum cleaners the structure
is made considerably more simple by the invention, since the vacuum cleaner dust bag is attached directly to the vacuum chamber or vacuum cleaner housing. The result of this is that presently employed holders and sealing means become redudant. This object is achieved by means of the features as indicated in the characterizing portion of patent claim 1.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 illustrates a section through a vacumm cleaner dust bag having an edge flange connection for attachment to a vacuum cleaner housing,
Fig. 2 illustrates a section through a vacuum cleaner dust bag having an edge flange connection for attachment to a mounting plate, and
Fig. 3 illustrates a section through a vacuum cleaner dust bag having an edge flange connection for attachment to a mounting plate.
In Fig. 1 reference number 4 refers to the forward portion of a vacuum cleaner dust bag 1 having a lid 2 connected to the forward portion 4 of the vacuum cleaner dust bag and being provided with an opening 5 for the vacuum air. The lid 2 has an outer flange 7' with a raised edge 7 and the flange 7' is mounted on an outer raised edge 6 of the vacuum cleaner housing or vacuum chamber 3. Reference number 8 refers to one or several mounting and dis- mounting tabs.
In Fig. 2 reference number 4 refers to the forward portion of a vacuum cleaner dust bag 1 having a lid 2 connected to the forward portion 4 of the vacuum cleaner dust bag and being provided with an opening 5 for the vacuum air. The lid 2 is provided with an outer flange 7' having a raised edge 7 and being mounted on an outer raised edge 6 of a mounting plate 9. A sealing membrane 10
may be provided so that it covers the opening 5 in order to be penetrated in a known manner when the vacuum cleaner dust bag is mounted in the vacuum chamber or vacuum cleaner housing. Refe¬ rence number 8 refers to one or several mounting and dismounting tips.
In Fig. 3 reference number 4 refers to a forward portion of a vacuum cleaner dust bag 1 having a lid 2 connected to the forward portion 4 of the vacuum cleaner dust bag and being provided with an opening 5 for the vacuum air. The lid 2 is provided with an inner flange 6' having an outer raised edge 6 and being mounted on an inner raised edge 7 of a mounting plate 9. A sealing membrane 10 may be provided for covering the opening 5 in a known manner so as to be penetrated when the vacuum cleaner dust bag is mounted to the vacuum chamber or vacuum cleaner housing. Reference number 8 refers to one or several mounting and dis¬ mounting tabs.
It is obvious that the vacuum cleaner dust bag of Fig. 1 may be attached to the wall of the vacuum chamber or vacuum cleaner housing in the same manner as illustrated in Fig. 3.
The mounting plate 9 replaces the presently employed cardboard or plastic collars and has the same function and mainly the same dimensions as these, but is manufactured from a more rigid mate¬ rial. Due to the fact that the mounting plate is manufactured from a more rigid material the sealing is enhanced in the cases where it replaces collars of cardboard, and at the same the durability is not endangered. Mounting plates are preferably employed in older vacuum cleaners having guides in the shape of holders or edge beads. The mounting plate 9 may naturally be produced having an outer dimension covering the size of existing plates or collars. Aided by an enclosed instruction the user may with normal handiness easily shape the mounting plate so that it fits his own vacuum cleaner.
In a known manner the vacuum cleaner dust bag 1 is delivery folded with the lid 2 connected to its forward portion 4. The mounting of the outer raised edge is carried out with maintained delivery folding by pressing the inner raised edge 7 onto and forcing it over the outer raised edge 6. The mounting on the outer raised edge 6 according to Fig. 3 is carried out in a similar manner. When the dust bag has been attached it is unfolded in a known manner by means of the vacuum of the vacuum cleaner.
Closing and sealing by means of plastic lids is very well known in connection with containers of different kinds and employs an outer raised edge and a lid having an inner raised edge that is resiliently forced over the outer raised edge.
