Description

A Childs Safety Seat
The present invention relates to a childs safety seat for use in vehicles in order to restrain the child in the event of an accident.
The present invention is particularly concerned with the provision of a childs safety seat which incorporates an adjustment mechanism enabling a posture of the child to be adjusted between an upright position and a reclining position.
The present invention further seeks to provide a childs safety seat having a base portion and a seat portion in which the base portion is so shaped to absorb a load applied by the seat portion in the even of an accident.
The present invention further seeks to provide a childs safety seat in which the base portion and the seat portion are so shaped to enable the seat portion to rest and slide upon the base portion.
Accordingly the present invention provides a childs safety seat comprising a base member and a seat member, the seat member being movably secured to the base member by mounting means comprising a pivotable and slidable attachment between the base member and a seat member at a first location and an adjustable reclining mechanism between the base member and the seat member at a second location, the second location being towards the rear of the base member, and the first and second locations being relatively close to one another.
The base member and the seat member can have surfaces so shaped that the seat member rests and slides upon the base member throughout the range of relative movement between these two members.
SUBSTITUTE SHEET The said surfaces on the base member and the seat member can be respectively flat and curved.
The base member can have a raised portion at its front end arranged to support the seat member in the event that the seat member applies loads to the base member under adverse loading conditions.
The reclining mechanism can comprise a first member attached to the base member and a second member attached to the seat member, the said two members being adjustably engaged with each other.
The said first member can comprise a nut, and the said second member can comprise a screw.
The nut can be attached to the seat member and the screw can be mounted on the base member.
The screw can be mounted in two bearings and can include an adjustment means located at the front of the base member.
The nut can be attached to the seat member by a screw which is a relatively loose fit in an opening in the seat member.
The nut can slide in a slot formed in the base member.
The slidable pivotable attachment can comprise rails engagable with pivotable members slidable in the rails.
The rails can be attached to the seat member and the pivotable members can be mounted on a bar fixed to the base member.
The present invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which;
SUBSTITUTE SHEET Figure 1 shows a side elevation of one form of childs safety seat according to the present invention with the seat member in a relatively upright position;
Figure 2 shows the safety seat of figure 1 with the seat member in a relatively reclined position;
Figure 3 shows the safety seat shown in figure 1 partially broken away to show the adjustable reclining mechanism;
Figure 4 shows a detail of the safety seat shown in figure 3 illustrating the reclining mechanism; and
Figure 5 shows a detail of the safety seat shown in figure 3 illustrating the pivotable sliding attachment of the seat member to the base member.
Referring to the drawings there is shown a childs safety seat (10) comprising a base member (12) and a seat member (14) . The safety seat is shown positioned on a vehicle seat the outline of which is shown by the broken line A-A.
It will be appreciated that the safety seat (10) is secured in position on the vehicle seat either by an adult seat belt or other securing means engaging with the base member (12) . It will also be appreciated that the seat member (14) is provided with a safety harness, in known manner.
It will also be appreciated that the seat member (14) is provided with an upholstered lining to provide comfort for the user.
In figure 1 the seat member (14) is shown in a relatively upright position and the position of the seat member can be adjusted through an adjustment mechanism which is described below by operation of a knob (16) to the reclining position shown in figure 2.
SUBSTITUTE SHEET Referring particularly to figure 3 the seat member is mounted on the base member (12) at two locations (18) and (20) located underneath and at the rear of the seat member respectively, the location (18) is at the rear of the lower section of the base member, and the two locations are relatively close to one another. The short distance between the locations provides for smaller relative movements of the adjustment mechanism to obtain the desired position of the seat member.
Referring particularly to figures 3 and 4, at location 18 there is shown an adjusting mechanism comprising a screw (22) which is journalled in bearings (24) secured to the interior of the base member (12) . A tube (26) is attached to one end of the screw (22) by means of a pin (28) and the knob (16) is attached to the end of the tube (26) which projects beyond the front of the base member (12) .
A nut (30) is mounted on the screw (22) and has a metal casing (32) . A slot (34) is provided in the base member (12) to allow the nut to be translated upon rotation of the screw (22) and to prevent rotation of the nut.
A screw (36) having a washer (38) extends through an enlarged opening (40) in the seat member (14) .
Referring particularly to figures 3 and 5 at location (20) a bar (42) is mounted at the back of the base member (12) and at each end extends into a length of plastics material (44) . Each length of plastics material is mounted in a rail (46) forming part of a pressing which is rivetted to the back of the seat member (14) .
As will be seen from figures 1, 2 and 3 the junction between the bottom and back of the seat member (14) is curved and that part of the seat member rests upon a surface of the base member (12) . The geometry of the locations (18) and (20) and the shape of the base member and seat member have been designed so that on
SUBSTITUTE SHEET operation of the reclining mechanism the seat member continues to be supported on the base member and the seat member slides upon the base member during adjustment.
The adjustment mechanism is operated by the knob (16) at the front of the seat. Upon rotation of the knob in one direction the nut (30) will be translated along the slot (34) towards the rear of the seat and the rails (46) will slide up the lengths of plastics material (44) whilst the lengths of plastic material (44) pivot on the bar (42) bringing the seat member to the upright position shown in figure 1. It will be appreciated that the adjustment mechanism allows for continuous adjustment between the end straps.
In order to recline the seat member, the knob (16) is rotated in the opposite direction and the nut (30) will be translated forwardly in the slot (34) and the rails (46) will slide downwardly over the lengths of plastics material (44) which will pivot on the bar (42) in the opposite direction to that described above.
The position of the seat member can be adjusted to any position between the limits imposed by the length of the screw (22) . In a typical arrangement the adjustment range of the seat member with respect to the base member is approximately 10°.
The base member (12) is formed with a ridge (48) towards its front end. The ridge (48) is provided in order to absorb load imparted to the base member by downward deflection of the seat member which may arise as the result of loading applied following an accident. It will be appreciated that the provision of such an energy absorbing structure will tend to alleviate or minimise the injuries to the child being restrained in the safety seat (10) . The ridge is so shaped that there will be contact between the seat members and the ridge after only a small deformation of the seat member.
SUBSTITUTE SHEET It will be appreciated that the childs safety seat according to the present invention provides a seat which is easy to adjust between a variety of positions between upright and reclined positions and which is simple and easy to adjust and comprises a low number of components.
The base member and the seat member can be made from any suitable plastics material, and can be manufactured by blow moulding.
