Abstract

An apparatus (12) and method for reducing the level of radioactivity of a radioactive material by electrolysis in an aqueous media (59). The electrolytic cell (12) includes a non-conductive housing (14) having inlet (54), outlet (56) and spaced apart first and second conductive grids (38 and 44) positioned within the housing (14). A plurality of conductive beads (36) loaded with the radioactive material form a packed bed (35) positioned within the housing (14) between the conductive grids (38 and 44) in electrical contact with the first grid (38) adjacent the inlet (54). The cores are of an ion exchange resin which is loaded with a salt form of the radioactive material, dried and fired at or above the decomposition temperature of the salt to convert the radioactive material to an oxide or pure metal form thereof. An electric power source (15/16) is operably connected across the first and second grids (38 and 44) whereby electrical current flows between the grids (38 and 44) and within the aqueous media (59).
