Abstract

The present invention relates to joining different wooden elements by means of wet gluing. In accordance with the invention this is performed by placing trunks of spruce, pine, birch, beech, oak and larch, said trunks usually having a top diameter of approximately 80-400 mm, in a water bath so that the desired moisture content is obtained, after which the trunks are sawn into pieces and joined with the aid of glue under pressure.

Description

METHOD OF MANUFACTURING PART UNITS TO END PRODUCTS OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF WOOD
Various wooden objects can be manufactured from a single unit but it is also feasible, and in certain cases advisable, to use several units and join them together in one way or another.
The present invention relates to a method in which, with the aid of several units, an end product can be produced that is rather complicated and in which a method using gluing has been utilized.
The object of the present invention is to provide a rational method for utilizing pure timber and thus achieve considerable savings in the manufacture of wooden products.
In the present case the starting materials are the following types of timber: spruce, pine, birch, beech, oak, larch and timber with equivalent properties. A slim trunk with a top diameter of between 80 and 140 mm is selected. This trunk is placed in a water bath so that it acquires a moisture content between 20 and 40 %. The water suitably has a temperature somewhere between 15° and 25°. When sufficient moisture has been absorbed by the timber it is cut into parts, generally in such a way that each part contains a core part having at least 8 annual rings. This method makes it unnecessary to remove the bark. The desired end product is obtained when the individual timber units of desired dampness have been joined together to form different bodies. All flat surfaces are provided with glue consisting of polyurethane glue or some other similar glue with the same properties. When the product is glued together it is compressed under a pressure of between 0.6 and 0.8 N/mm2. Finished products may then be surface-treated and possibly impregnated. Timber units from a warm bath can be used with great ingenuity for innumerable different products such as furniture, tables and generally for all kinds of furniture material as well as for wall material. The railway industry places high demands on rails that are laid, namely that they shall withstand a load of approximately 40 tons. This in turn places considerable demands on the track foundation and sleepers. It has therefore been found that sleepers made from wood h ave advantages over concrete sleepers. These wooden sleepers are manufactured in exactly the same way as described above, namely tree trunks are placed in a water bath in order to acquire a certain degree of dampness, and are then processed to bars of substantially rectangular shape, provided with polyurethane glue or the like and joined together so that they form sleepers, after which the sleepers are subjected to pressure. With regard to sleepers it is obvious that not every unit in the sleeper need be as long as the sleeper itself. The latter may consist of several parts arranged one after the other and very inexpensive sleepers can be produced in this way.
It is extremely advantageous when producing a unit in accordance with the present method, for the unit to consist of heartwood and to have at least eight annual rings.

Claims

C LAIM
1. A method of manufacturing part units to end products of various kinds, characterized in that the wood is selected from spruce, pine, birch, beech, oak, larch and timber with equivalent properties, the selected timber unit having a diameter at the top in the order of 80-140 mm, in that selected timber is placed in a tank for the purpose of acquiring a moisture content in the order of 20-40 %, in that the moisture-treated timber is cut in such a way that each unit contains flat surfaces and a cross section with a number of annual rings, in that the units are glued together with polyurethane glue or equivalent while having a moisture content in the order of 40 %, the units to be joined being subjected to a pressure in the order of 0.6-0.8 N/mm2, and in that when gluing is completed the moisture content is permitted to decrease to 14%.
