Abstract

Sensor array device for detecting chemical analytes having sensors formed by separate regions of a conductive material having one composition and a non-conductive material different in composition from that material of the conductive region, and the conductive region is comprised of a nanoparticle type colloid. Each sensor operates by manifesting an electrical response path which passes through both regions of conductive and non-conductive material, where nanoparticles may have a core selected from the group of a metal, metal alloy, metal oxide, organic complex, semiconductor, superconductor or mixed inorganic/organic complex, and nonconductive materials may include ligands such as polymers, detergents, protein complexes, surfactants, radioactive groups, fluorescent moieties, oligonucleotides, alkanethiols and dendrimeric materials. Distinct embodiments of the sensing means may be based on utilizing a surface acoutic wave device, quartz microbalance, chemiresistor, conducting polymer, dye-impregnated polymer film, electrochemical gas detector, chemFET, polymer coated micromirror or a carbon black polymer composite.
