Description

EDGELIT ILLUMINATED DISPLAY SYSTEM
Technical Field
The present invention relates to a display system using illumination, and more particularly, to an edgelit illuminated display system for illuminating an advertisement plane by irradiating incident light from at least an upper surface or a lower surface of a light-transmitting medium to one edge.
Background Art
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of a conventional edgelit illuminated display device and FIG. 5 is a cross-sectional view along line A-A of FIG. 1.
As shown in FIGs. 4 and 5, the conventional edgelit illuminated display system includes a rectangular frame 1, a light source 2 shaped of a long fluorescent lamp and installed inside the rectangular frame 1, a light-transmitting medium 3 positioned inside the rectangular frame 1 for irradiating incident light from the light source 2 frontward, a reflecting mirror 4 installed under the light-transmitting medium 3, that is, opposite to the light source 2, for reflecting the light having passed through the light-transmitting medium 3 to the inside of the light-transmitting medium 3, an advertisement plane 5 having an advertisement message printed thereon and positioned at the front of the light-transmitting medium 3, and a transparent protection member 6 installed at the front of the advertisement plane 5 for protecting the same.
Also, the edgelit illuminated display system includes a reflective tape 7 installed around the light source 2 for making the light generated from the light source 2 maximally incident to the light-transmitting medium 3, and a reflective film 8 installed at the rear of the light- transmitting medium 3 for reflecting the light frontward or dispersing the light. The light-transmitting medium 3 is made of a panel capable of transmitting light easily such as a transparent acryl panel or glass. As shown in FIG. 6, the light-transmitting medium 3 has a matrix 3a of a multitude of dots printed on its rear side so that the light incident into the inside of the light-transmitting medium 3 impinges on the dot matrix 3 a to be refracted, dispersed or diffused so as to be incident into the advertisement plane 5.
In the above-described conventional edgelit illuminated display system, if power is applied to the light source 2, the light emitted from the light source 2 and the light reflected from the reflective tape 7 are incident into the inside of the light-transmitting medium 3. The incident light passes through the light-transmitting medium 3 to then impinge on the dot matrix 3 a to be refracted or dispersed and simultaneously reenter the front side of the light-transmitting medium 3 through the reflecting mirror 4. The light transmitted to the rear side of the light-transmitting medium 3 impinges on the reflective film 8 to be evenly diffused, is again transmitted to the inside of the light-transmitting medium 3 to be irradiated to the front side of the light-transmitting medium 3 to pass through the advertisement plane 5, thereby illuminating the advertisement plane 5 and providing a visual effect of advertisement.
However, in the conventional edgelit illuminated display system, since the light is dispersed and diffused by the dot matrix 3 a printed on the light-transmitting medium 3, there is a limit in dispersion and diffusion of light, which makes it difficult to enhance the brightness of the advertisement plane 5.
Also, since the conventional edgelit illuminated display system is constructed by separately printing the dot matrix 3 a on one side of the light-transmitting medium 3, the fabrication process of the edgelit illuminated display system becomes complex and the fabrication cost increases.
Disclosure of the Invention
To solve the above problems, it is an object of the present invention to provide an edgelit illuminated display system which can significantly enhance the brightness of an advertisement plane such that the incident light from a light source is refracted and dispersed in more complicated manner to then be irradiated to the advertisement plane by arranging a multitude of transmitting sheets, each having a rough rear surface and a smooth front surface, to overlap one another. To accomplish the above object, there is provided an edgelit illuminated display system constructed such that the incident light from a light source to at least an upper side or a lower side of a light- transmitting medium passes through the light-transmitting medium to be illuminated to one edge, thereby illuminating an advertisement plane, wherein the light-transmitting medium is formed by overlapping a multitude of transmitting sheets, the rear surface of each of the transmitting sheets is rough and the front surface of each of the transmitting sheets is smooth.

Best modes for Crrying Ou the Invention
Hereinbelow, a preferred embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
FIG. 1 is a sectional view illustrating a first embodiment of an edgelit illuminated display system according to the present invention. In the first embodiment of the present invention, as shown in FIG. 1, the edgelit illuminated display system includes an outer frame 51, a light source 52 installed inside an upper end of the frame 51, a light- transmitting medium 60 formed of a panel having a predetermined thickness and fixed inside the frame 51, for irradiating light incident from the light source 52 laterally, a reflecting mirror 54 installed under the light-transmitting medium 60, for reflecting the light having passed through the light-transmitting medium 60 to the inside of the light- transmitting medium 60, a reflective film 58 installed in the rear of the light-transmitting medium 60 for reflecting the light frontward, and an advertisement plane 55 having an advertisement message printed thereon and positioned at the front of the light-transmitting medium 60.
Here, the light-transmitting medium 60 is constructed such that three transmitting sheets 61, 62 and 63 made of a transparent panel, e.g., a transparent acryl panel or a transparent glass panel, are overlapped. The respective transmitting sheets 61, 62 and 63 have smooth front surfaces 61a, 62a and 63 a and rough rear surfaces 61b, 62b and 63b having micro- fabricated irregularities.
The light-transmitting medium 60 may be formed by arranging two or four transmitting sheets so as to be overlapped, as occasion demands.
As described above, the rear surfaces of the transmitting sheets 61,
62 and 63 are formed by rough surfaces 61b, 62b and 63b having a multitude of micro-fabricated irregularities, the incident light from the light source 52 and the light reflected and reentering the reflective film 58 and the reflecting mirror 54 impinge on the rough surfaces 61b, 62b and 63b to facilitate dispersion and diffusion of light, thereby enhancing the brightness of light irradiated to the advertisement plane 55.
In other words, the light incident from the light source 52 to the respective transmitting sheets 61, 62 and 63 impinge on the rough surfaces 61b, 62b and 63b to then project on the smooth surface 61a of the foremost transmitting sheet 61 while undergoing dispersion and diffusion in more complicated manner. Thus, the light incident from the light source 52 and irradiated to the advertisement surface 55 is further diffused, thereby enhancing the brightness of the advertisement plane 55. Here, the above-described transmitting sheets 61, 62 and 63 are preferably a transparent acryl panel. The transparent acryl panel is fabricated by molding using an acryl solution in a mold having one smooth surface and the other rough surface or by forming a rough surface of a transparent acryl panel using a sand blasting method. Also, the light-transmitting medium 60 having many folds can be formed by pressingly bonding the transmitting sheets 61, 62 and 63 in a state where they are overlapped, or by bonding the transmitting sheets by applying a transparent adhesive. A reflective tape 57 is installed around the light source 52 inside the frame 51 so that the light generated from the light source 52 is incident into the light-transmitting medium 60. A transparent protection panel 56 is installed at the front of the advertisement plane 55 for protecting the advertisement plane 55. In the case when the advertisement plane 55 is formed of a colored panel having a predetermined thickness, through which the light is transmitted, the transparent protection panel 56 is not necessarily installed. Here, the advertisement plane 55 is positioned at the outermost side.
The light-transmitting medium 60 used in this embodiment of the present invention is not limited to a transparent acryl panel but another kind of a transparent panel in which a front surface is smooth and a rear surface is rough, e.g., a transparent glass or a transparent plastic. According to the first embodiment of the present invention, if the light irradiated from the light source 51 is incident into the respective transmitting sheets 61, 62 and 63 of the light-transmitting medium 60, the light is refracted and dispersed while passing through the inside of the transmitting sheets 61, 62 and 63 to then travel toward the front and rear surfaces of the light-transmitting medium 60 as well as downward.
Particularly, the light traveling toward the rear surface of the light- transmitting medium 60 impinge on the rough surfaces 61b, 62b and 63b of the respective transmitting sheets 61, 62 and 63 to then be dispersed in a complicated manner. Some of the light is reflected frontward and dispersed in more complicated manner by the rough surfaces 61b, 62b and 63b of the respective transmitting sheets 61, 62 and 63 to then project frontward. Also, some of the light is transmitted to then impinge on the reflective film 58 and transmitted while passing through the insides of the respective transmitting sheets 61, 62 and 63 to then be irradiated to the advertisement plane 55.
Thus, the light irradiated from the light source 52 is increasingly refracted, dispersed and diffused by the rough surfaces 61b, 62b and 63b of the respective transmitting sheets 61, 62 and 63 and is transmitted to the advertisement plane 55, thereby enhancing the brightness of the advertisement plane 55.
FIG. 2 is a sectional view illustrating a second embodiment of an edgelit illuminated display system according to the present invention.
The second embodiment shows that the edgelit illuminated display system irradiates both sides of an advertisement plane whereas the first embodiment shows that the edgelit illuminated display system irradiates one side of an advertisement plane.
In other words, three overlapping transmitting sheets whose rough surfaces face the central portion are arranged to form first and second light-transmitting mediums 70 and 80 so that the incident light from the light source 72 passes through the first and second light-transmitting mediums 70 and 80 to then be irradiated in both directions. A reflective tape 77 is installed outside the light source 72 and a reflecting mirror 74 is installed under the first and second light- transmitting mediums 70 and 80. Advertisement planes 71 and 81 are installed at the front of the first and second light-transmitting medium 70 and 80, respectively. FIG. 3 is a sectional view illustrating a third embodiment of an edgelit illuminated display system according to the present invention.
The third embodiment of the present invention is similar to the second embodiment with the exception of two light sources 82 and 83 being used for further enhancing the brightness of the advertisement planes, a light-transmitting medium 84 in which three transmitting sheets are arranged being installed at one side and another light-transmitting medium 85 in which two transmitting sheets are arranged being installed at the other side.
According to the edgelit illuminated display system according to the present invention constructed and operating as described above, a multitude of transmitting sheets whose one surfaces are rough are overlapped so as to irradiate the light incident from a light source to one edge. Also, since the rough surfaces increasingly disperse and diffuse the light compared to the dot matrix in the conventional art, the brightness of an advertisement plane is further enhanced, thereby greatly improving aqhe visual effect of advertisement.
Industrial Applicability
The edgelit illuminated display system according to the present invention can be used in display boards and advantageously provides good illumination without a large amount of electricity previously required.
