Abstract

A pressure relief valve detection and monitoring device (5, 55, 155), system, and method are disclosed. The device includes a pressure relief valve (7, 57, 157) having a valve assembly (19, 69, 165). The valve assembly has a first closed position, and at least one open position in which fluid is permitted to pass through the valve. A valve position monitoring device is disposed on the valve body (8, 58, 158) and is adapted to generate a position signal when the valve assembly is moved into the at least one open position. The monitoring device includes a housing (31, 81, 175) mounted on the valve body, and an actuating mechanism positioned with respect to the housing and is adapted to move with respect to the housing in response to the movement of the valve assembly from its closed position into its at least one open position. In a first embodiment the valve position monitoring device (5) comprises a linear variable differential transformer (40) adapted to emit a second position signal in response to the valve being moved into the at least one open position. In a second embodiment the valve position monitoring device (55) comprises a reed switch (90) adapted to signal when the valve assembly (69) is moved out of its closed position. In a third embodiment the valve position monitoring device (155) comprises a linear potentiometer (183) adapted to emit a second position signal in response to the valve being moved into the at least one open position.
