Abstract

A volumetric scanner (10) such as a PET or MRI scanner for example is provided with an array of cameras (C1 to C6) which are arranged to acquire a 3D surface representation (20) of a patient (P) which is referenced to the same reference frame as the internal volumetric image (30) of the patient. The 3D surface data is used to enhance the volumetric data e.g. by de-blurring the image by distorting the volumetric reference frame with the aid of the surface representation, optionally with the aid of a statistical model of the possible configurations of the patient Volumetric data sets of different modalities (e.g. MRI and PET respectively) can be combined by registering the 3D surfaces captured by camera arrangements associated with the respective scanners.
