Abstract

An optical fiber amplifier (10) includes an optical system (15) and an electronic controller (40). The optical system includes: an optical gain medium (20); at least one pump source (22) coupled to the optical gain medium; an input port for an incoming signal; and an output port for an out-going signal. It also includes an input optical signal tap (28) coupled to a first optical detector (32); and an output signal tap (30) coupled to second optical detector (34). The controller (40) is provided with a user interface (55) that allows a user to control desired gain value; amplifier output power value or ASE noise compensation.
