Description

A PRODUCT DISPLAY DEVICE
THIS INVENTION relates to a product display device.
The invention relates particularly to a product display device of the type on which products displayed for sale are suspended from merchandising pegs, requiring the products to be removed from the pegs if required for purchase. The merchandising pegs of product display devices of the type are provided in different configurations, extending generally from a support wall in spaced locations which permit products to be suspended from different pegs. One particular configuration merchandising peg comprises a pair of substantially parallel, spaced arms disposed with respect to their support wall in a configuration in which products can be suspended therefrom in a consistently oriented configuration.
The products suspended from merchandising pegs conventionally are packaged in card- type packages, or in synthetic plastics bags having header cards attached thereto, the cards of these packages having slot-like apertures defined therein which permit the cards to fit slidably, in a relatively snug configuration, on a merchandising peg for the suspension of the packages. Pilfering of products suspended from merchandising pegs of product display devices of the above type is a known problem, particularly because the relevant products usually are relatively small and it is easy to simultaneously remove two or more products from a peg and hide some or all of these products in a bag, a pocket of an item of clothing, or the like. It is believed that if two or more of such products cannot be simultaneously removed from a peg, i.e. if such products can be removed from a peg one by one only, the above problem will be at least partially alleviated.
Accordingly, it is an object of this invention to at least alleviate the above pilfering problem.
Any reference hereinafter to a product display device must be interpreted as a reference to a product display device which includes one or more merchandising peg, whereas by a merchandising peg is meant a peg of the above defined general type.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a product display device which includes a support structure including an operatively upright support wall from which at least one merchandising peg extends, the merchandising peg having a restrictor device located thereon at the free end thereof which requires to be manually acted upon for changing the configuration of the device from an operative configuration, in which it is biased and in which products suspended from the merchandising peg cannot be removed therefrom, to an inoperative configuration, in which a single product only can be displaced beyond the restrictor device for removal from the merchandising peg.
The construction of the restrictor device of the product display device of the invention preferably is such that changing of the configuration of the restrictor device, from its operative configuration to its inoperative configuration, requires two fingers of a person's hand to act thereon, thus requiring, for the removal of a product from the merchandising peg of the display device with the product having being displaced beyond the restrictor device, release of the restrictor device by the said two fingers of a person, providing for the restrictor device to change back to its operative configuration and requiring the process to be repeated in order to remove a further product from the merchandising peg . By requiring a person to use two fingers of one hand for changing the configuration of the restrictor device in order to remove a product from a merchandising peg of a product display device, the person clearly will require his other hand to actually displace the product from the merchandising peg and insofar as both his hands therefore will be required for removing a product from a merchandising peg, it will not be possible to remove two or more products simultaneously from the merchandising peg .
The restrictor body of the merchandising peg of the product display device may have a body that is mounted on the merchandising peg at the free end thereof and the body may have at least one primary restrictor formation displaceably located thereon for manual displacement between a first position, which coincides with the operative configuration of the device, and a second position, which coincides with the inoperative configuration of the device. The body particularly has two body parts that define complementary clipping formations that are engaged for mounting of the body on the merchandising peg .
Particularly for a merchandising peg that has two parallel, spaced wire arms extending from the support wall of the support structure and a cross member located at or near the free end of the arms for holding the arms in their parallel spaced configuration, the body parts of the body may be adapted to be at least partially located between the arms and to pass over the cross member on opposite sides thereof, for securing the location of the body on the merchandising peg by being clipped together.
A preferred embodiment of the body of the restrictor device provides for the body to have two primary restrictor formations located thereon, the restrictor formations comprising wing-like formations that extend from respective opposite sides of the body, the wing-like formations being resiliency biased into their first position, while requiring a manual action to be applied thereon for displacing them into their second position. Each wing-like formation may be pivotally located on the body and have a resiliently deformable formation, projecting integrally from the body, acting thereon for biasing the wing-like formation into its first position while permitting displacement into its second position.
Further according the invention, the body of the restrictor device may have an auxiliary restrictor formation displaceably located thereon in a location in which a product to be removed from the merchandising peg must first pass beyond the auxiliary restrictor formation before complete removal is permitted by the manual displacement of the or each primary restrictor formation from its first position to its second position, the auxiliary restrictor formation comprising a profiled restrictor element that defines an operative leading end and an operative trailing end and that is displaceable by the action of a product thereon during displacement of the product over the restrictor element from its leading end to its trailing end, in a manner in which, during the displacement of the product over the element, the leading end of the element will restrict the displacement of a following product over the element. The restrictor element forming the auxiliary restrictor formation may be pivotally located with respect to the body of the restrictor device and may be urged by the force of gravity towards a position in which the leading end of the restrictor element permits a product to be displaced over the restrictor element.
The product display device of the invention particularly may have a plurality of merchandising pegs extending from the support wall of the support structure thereof, each merchandising peg having an equivalent restrictor device located thereon at the free end thereof.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a merchandising peg for a product display device, the merchandising peg having a restrictor device located thereon at the free end thereof which requires, in the operative configuration of the merchandising peg having products suspended therefrom, to be manually acted upon for changing the configuration of the device from an operative configuration, in which it is biased and in which products suspended from the merchandising peg cannot be removed therefrom, to an inoperative configuration, in which a single product only can be displaced beyond the restrictor device for removal from the merchandising peg.
The merchandising peg, in accordance with the second aspect of the invention, also may include all the features of the merchandising peg of the product display device, in accordance with the first aspect of this invention.
The merchandising peg also may have mounting formations for mounting the peg on the operative upright support wall of the support structure of a product display device in a configuration in which it extends from the support wall and permits a plurality of products to be suspended therefrom.
According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided a restrictor device for a merchandising peg for a product display device, which restrictor device is locatable on a merchandising peg at the free end thereof and, in its operative configuration, requires to be manually acted upon for changing the configuration of the device from an operative configuration, into which it is biased and in which products suspended from the merchandising peg on which it is located cannot be removed therefrom, to an inoperative configuration, in which a single product only can be displaced beyond the restrictor device for removal from the merchandising peg.
The restrictor device, in accordance with the third aspect of this invention, may include also all the features of the restrictor device of the merchandising peg, in accordance with the second aspect of this invention. Still further, the restrictor device, in accordance with the third aspect of this invention, may include all the features of the restrictor device of the merchandising peg of the product display device, in accordance with the first aspect of this invention.
Insofar as reference is made hereinabove to the location of a restrictor device at the free end of a merchandising peg of a product display device, it must be understood that the restrictor device can be located at any location near the free end of the merchandising peg and any reference herein to the location of the restrictor device with respect to a merchandising peg accordingly must be interpreted as such.
Further features of a product display device, in accordance with the first aspect of this invention, of a merchandising peg, in accordance with the second aspect of this invention, and of a restrictor device, in accordance with the third aspect of this invention, are described hereinafter, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings. In the drawings:
Figure 1 shows a three-dimensional exploded view of a merchandising peg, in accordance with the second aspect of this invention;
Figure 2 shows a three-dimensional view of the merchandising peg of Figure 1 , in its assembled configuration;
Figure 3 shows a side view of the merchandising peg of Figure 2, illustrating a first step in the removal of a product from the merchandising peg, in use of the merchandising peg;
Figure 4 shows a plan view of the merchandising peg of Figure 2, illustrating a second step in the removal of a product from the merchandising peg, in use of the merchandising peg; and Figures 5 shows a schematic side view of a product display device, in accordance with the first aspect of this invention.
Referring initially to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, a merchandising peg, in accordance with the invention, is designated generally by the reference numeral 1 0. The merchandising peg comprises two elongate wire arms 1 2 that, in use, extend from the support wall of a support structure of a product display device of the type herein envisaged, the arms 1 2 being connected by a cross member 14 at the operative free ends thereof, as is clearly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings. The merchandising peg 10 also has a restrictor device, in accordance with the third aspect of this invention, located thereon, the restrictor device being designated generally by the reference numeral 1 6.
The restrictor device 1 6 has a body 1 8 made up of two body parts, 20 and 22 respectively, the two body parts being designed to fit at least partially between the arms 1 2 of the merchandising peg 10 and over the cross-member 14. The two body parts, 20 and 22, are clipped together in their operative configuration by complementary clipping formations, 24 and 26, that are defined by the said two body parts. It will be appreciated in this regard that the exact configuration of the two body parts, 20 and 22, is greatly variable while still providing for the secure location of the complete restrictor device 1 6 on the merchandising peg 10 and, as such, this is not described in further detail herein.
The body part 20 of the body 1 8 of the restrictor device 1 6 defines two pivot formations 28 near the leading end thereof on opposite sides thereof, with a resiliently displaceable biasing formation 30 being associated with each pivot formation 28. The pivot formations 28 each have a wing-like formation 32 pivotally located thereon, with a biasing formation 30 acting on each wing-like formation 32 for biasing the two winglike formations into the configuration as is illustrated clearly in Figure 2 of the drawings. The body part 20 further is profiled to permit the wing-like formations to be displaced from their first position as shown in Figure 2, by pressing them towards one another, to a position (not shown) in which the outer perimeter edges of the wing-like formations 32 fall within perimeter lines defined by the arms 1 2 of the merchandising peg 10, thus permitting a product suspended from the merchandising peg 10 to be removed therefrom, which is described in further detail hereafter.
The restrictor device 1 6 further has an auxiliary restrictor formation 34 pivotally located thereon, particularly within a space 36 that is defined within the body part 22. The auxiliary restrictor formation is thus located in a location between the arms 1 2 of the merchandising peg 10. The auxiliary restrictor formation 34 is biased, by the force of gravity, into a position in which the leading end 38 thereof lies within the plane of the body part 22, while a profiled intermediate segment 40, defined between the leading end 38 and the operative trailing end 42 of the formation 34, projects out of the general plane of the body part 22. The auxiliary restrictor formation 34 also serves to prevent a plurality of products suspended from the merchandising peg 10, in use of the peg 10, to be simultaneously removed therefrom, this feature being explained in more detail with reference to Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings.
Referring particularly to Figure 3 of the drawings, the merchandising peg 10 is illustrated in this drawing in its operative horizontal configuration in which it extends from the support wall of the support structure of a product display device (not shown), the merchandising peg 10 being illustrated with two products 50 suspended therefrom, in the configuration in which products are conventionally suspended from a merchandising peg . Particularly, each product 50 has a header card 52 which defines a slot-like aperture therein, which aperture provides for the card to fit slidably, in a relatively snug configuration, over the arms 1 2 of the merchandising peg 10. In order to remove one of the products 50.1 from the merchandising peg 1 0, the product is displaced in the direction of arrow 54 towards the auxiliary restrictor formation 34. As the product passes over the leading end 38 of the formation 34, it will act on the formation 34 to displace the leading end 38 thereof out of the general plane of the body part 22 (as shown in dotted lines) and, as such, out of the plane of the merchandising peg 10. This will prevent a second product 50 from being displaced over the restrictor formation 34, at least until the first product has completely passed beyond the formation 34 and the force of gravity acting thereon has displaced the formation 34 back to the position as shown in solid lines in Figure 3 of the drawings.
Referring now also to Figure 4 of the drawings, by the continued displacement of the product 50.1 in the direction of arrow 54 towards the wing-like formations 32, the product will reach the position shown in Figure 4, where the wing-like formations 32 will prevent further displacement. When in this position, the wing-like formations 32 can be pressed towards one another, in the direction of arrows 56, by being pressed together between two fingers of a person's hand, and when displaced into the second position of the wing-like formations 32 as described above, the person can use his other hand to displace the product 50.1 over the wing-like formations 32. It will be appreciated that this displacement over the wing-like formations 32 can continue only until the fingers of the person's hand pressing them together interfere with the continued displacement of the product 50.1 , at which time the wing-like formations 32 will have to be released in order to complete the removal of the product 50.1 from the merchandising peg 10. As a result of this release and the removal of the product 50.1 from the merchandising peg 10, the wing-like formations 32 will be urged back into their position as shown in Figure 4. As such, it is not possible to simultaneously remove two or more products from the merchandising peg 10 as this is effectively restricted by the operation of the auxiliary restrictor formation 34 and the primary restrictor formations in the form of the wing-like formations 32. It will be understood in this regard that a person who wishes to displace a product from a merchandising peg, as described above, will require the use of both his hands and by creating the restriction against the simultaneous removal of two or more products, the potential for pilfering will be greatly reduced . Particularly, pilfering could be relatively easily identified due to a person having to spend an unduly long time to remove a plurality of product from a merchandising peg . The visibility that will be created by the fact that two or more products can only be removed one after the other, clearly will serve as a deterrent to pilfering, which in turn will reduce the shrinkage that often occurs in shopping situations, particularly in relation to products that are offered for sale on display stands including merchandising pegs of the type envisaged .
Referring particularly to Figure 5 of the drawings, the general configuration of a product display device, in accordance with the invention, is illustrated schematically therein. The product display device is designated generally by the reference numeral 60 and includes a support structure incorporating a base support 62 and a support wall 64. The support wall 64 has a plurality of merchandising pegs 10 extending therefrom, each merchandising peg 10 having a restrictor device 1 6 located thereon. Insofar as the general configuration of product display devices of the type is well known, this is not described in further detail herein. It will be appreciated that in relation to the product display device 10, which incorporates the use of merchandising pegs 10 and restrictor devices 1 6, the potential for pilfering of products from the display device 60 will be greatly reduced.
It will be understood also that particularly the merchandising peg 10 and the restrictor device 1 6 can be formed of any suitable materials, it being envisaged that the various body parts of the restrictor device 60 will be formed of a suitable synthetic plastics material which has the necessary characteristics to enable the operation thereof as hereinabove defined and described.
Insofar as the exact configurations of a product display device 60, of a merchandising peg 10 and of a restrictor device 60 are all greatly variable, the invention extends also to all the variations thereof which still incorporate the general principles as are hereinabove defined and described.

A merchandising peg as claimed in Claim 14, which has two parallel, spaced wire arms extending from the end to be mounted on the support wall of a support structure of a product display device and a cross member located at or near the operative free end of the arms for holding the arms in their parallel spaced configuration and in which the body parts of the body are adapted to be at least partially located between the arms and to pass over the cross member on opposite sides thereof, for securing the location of the body on the merchandising peg by being clipped together.
1 6. A merchandising peg as claimed in any one of Claims 13 to 15, in which the body has two primary restrictor formations located thereon, the restrictor formations comprising wing-like formations that extend from respective opposite sides of the body, the wing-like formations being resiliently biased into their first position, while requiring manual action to be applied thereon for displacing them into their second position.
A merchandising peg as claimed in Claim 1 6, in which each wing-like formation is pivotally located on the body and has a resiliently deformable formation, projecting integrally from the body, acting thereon for biasing the wing-like formation into its first position while permitting displacement into its second position.
A merchandising peg as claimed in any one of Claims 1 3 to 1 7, in which the body of the restrictor device has an auxiliary restrictor formation displaceably located in a location in which a product to be removed from the merchandising peg, in use of the merchandising peg, must first pass beyond the auxiliary restrictor formation before complete removal is permitted by the manual displacement of the or each primary restrictor formation from its first position to its second position, the auxiliary restrictor formation comprising a profiled restrictor element that defines an operative leading end and an operative trailing end and that is displaceable, by the action of a product thereon during displacement of the product over the restrictor element from its leading end to its trailing end, in a manner in which, during displacement of the product over the element, the leading end of the element will restrict the displacement of a following product over the element.
A merchandising peg as claimed in Claim 1 8, in which the restrictor element forming the auxiliary restrictor formation is pivotally located with respect to the body of the restrictor device and, in the operative configuration of the merchandising peg, is urged by the force of gravity towards the position in which the leading end of the restrictor element permits a product to be displaced over the restrictor element.
A merchandising peg as claimed in any one of Claims 1 1 to 1 9, which has mounting formations for mounting the peg on the operative upright support wall of the support structure of a product display device in a configuration in which it extends from the support wall and permits a plurality of products to be suspended therefrom.
21 . A restrictor device for a merchandising peg for a product display device, which restrictor device is locatable on a merchandising peg at the operative free end thereof and, in its operative configuration, requires to be manually acted upon for changing the configuration of the device from an operative configuration, into which it is biased and in which products suspended from the merchandising peg on which it is located cannot be removed therefrom, to an inoperative configuration, in which a single product only can be displaced beyond the restrictor device for removal from the merchandising peg.
22. A restrictor device as claimed in Claim 21 , in which changing of the configuration of the device, from its operative configuration to its inoperative configuration, requires two fingers of a person's hand to act thereon, and in which removal of a productfrom a merchandising peg on which the restrictor device is located, with the product having been displaced beyond the restrictor device, requires release of the restrictor device by the said two fingers of a person, providing for the restrictor device to change back to its operative configuration and requiring the process to be repeated in order to remove a further product from the merchandising peg.
23. A restrictor device as claimed in Claim 21 or Claim 22, which has a body that can be mounted on a merchandising peg at the free end thereof, which body has at least one primary restrictor formation displaceably located thereon for manual displacement between a first position, which coincides with the operative configuration of the device, and a second position, which coincides with the inoperative configuration of the device.
A restrictor device as claimed in Claim 23, in which the body has two body parts that define complementary clipping formations that can engage one another to provide for mounting of the body on a merchandising peg.
A restrictor device as claimed in Claim 24, which is adapted for use on a merchandising peg that has two parallel, spaced wire arms that, in the operative configuration of the merchandising peg, extend from the support wall of a support structure of a product display device, the spaced wire arms having a cross member located at or near the free ends of the arms for holding the arms in their parallel spaced configuration, the body parts of the body of the restrictor device being adapted to be at least partially located between the arms and to pass over the cross member on opposite sides thereof, for securing the location of the body on the merchandising peg by being clipped together.
A restrictor device as claimed in any one of Claims 23 to 25, in which the body has two primary restrictor formations located thereon, the restrictor formations comprising wing-like formations that extend from respective opposite sides of the body, the wing-like formations being resiliently biased into their first position, while requiring a manual action to be applied thereon for displacing them into their second position.
A restrictor device as claimed in Claim 26, in which each wing-like formation is pivotally located on the body and has a resiliently deformable formation, projecting integrally from the body, acting thereon for biasing the wing-like formation into its first position while permitting displacement into its second position.
A restrictor device as claimed in any one of Claims 23 to 27, in which the body has an auxiliary restrictor formation displaceably located thereon in a location in which a product to be removed from a merchandising peg on which the restrictor device is located must first pass beyond the auxiliary restrictor formation before complete removal is permitted by the manual displacement of the or each primary restrictor formation from its first position to its second position, the auxiliary restrictor formation comprising a profiled restrictor element that defines an operative leading end and an operative trailing end and that is displaceable, by the action of a product thereon, during displacement of the product overthe restrictor element from its leading end to its trailing end, in the operative configuration of the restrictor device, in a manner in which, during displacement of the product over the element, the leading end of the element will restrict the displacement of a following product over the element.
29. A restrictor device as claimed in Claim 28, in which the restrictor element forming the auxiliary restrictor formation is pivotally located with respect to the body of the restrictor device and, in the operative configuration of the restrictor device, is urged by the force of gravity towards a position in which the leading end of the restrictor element permits a product to be displaced over the restrictor element.
