Abstract

The invention relates to ultrahydrophobic surfaces of metallic materials, to methods for the production thereof and to their use for producing articles that cannot be made wet with water. According to the invention, the ultrahydrophobic surfaces can be obtained by surface-structuring metallic materials using intensified anodic oxidation or by means of etching or pickling treatments or using laser ablation and by providing the surfaces with a thin hydrophobic coating that does not significantly alter the surface structuring.

Description

Beschreibung Ultr ahydrophobe Oberflächen, Verfahren zu deren Herstellung sowie Verwendung Description Ultrahydrophobic surfaces, process for their production and use
The invention relates to ultrahydrophobic surfaces of metallic materials, processes for their production and their use for the production of water-non-wettable objects.
Ultrahydrophobia is characterized by an extremely reduced wettability of solid surfaces; it leads to the formation of almost spherical drops of water, which find no hold on the surface and roll off even at very low inclinations. In the case of metrological characterization, there are negligible differences between the advancing and retreating angles (Θ a «Θ r ). From the point of view of application, ultrahydrophobia forms the essential prerequisite for the so-called self-cleaning properties, which make it extremely easy to keep surfaces that are in contact with air and exposed to dirt deposited in an extremely simplified manner, since the use of surface-active cleaning agents (surfactants) and mechanical support can be completely dispensed with. For outdoor applications, it can already be cleaned by precipitation. Previously known work on ultrahydrophobia shows that this can only be achieved by combining suitable morphological and chemical properties of the material surfaces and therefore usually a combination of processes must be used.
No. 3,354,022 (1964) describes basic model experiments to increase the water-repellent properties of already intrinsically hydrophobic waxes and polymer materials by embossing the surface at elevated temperature. The characteristic distances between the micro profiles produced in this way should not be more than 1000 μm at profile heights of at least 50% of the distances, with another condition being mentioned that the air-filled intermediate space takes up> 60% of the contacting surface.
In a very general way and with reference to plant models ("Lotus Effect ® "), WO 96/04123 AI specifies as conditions for the formation of self-cleaning surfaces that an artificial profile with elevations and depressions by distances of 5-200 microns and heights of 5-100 μm must be marked. gene consist of intrinsically hydrophobic polymers or be stably hydrophobized. In principle, these methods can also be used for metals. However, the first two in particular must be assessed as relatively complex and cost-intensive, especially if a high throughput is to be achieved in industrial production.
Based on concrete examples and without reference to metallic surfaces, some of the work provides that the desired morphological properties are generated by applying fine particulate foreign substances to the respective substrates, whereby the deposited materials themselves are not hydrophobic. They are fixed at the same time as the hydrophobization in a second step. This includes JP 07316546 (1995), JP 10025469 (1998) and DE 197 46 053 AI (1999) and EP 0 687 715 A2. The fundamental disadvantage here is that the fixation and hydrophobization step must be carried out in such a way that on the one hand the required strength is achieved, which requires certain amounts of effort, and on the other hand the micro-profiling of the composite given by the particles is not lost due to the overmolding with a liquid film , This disadvantage does not exist if the substance causing the formation of the surface shape is directly connected to the substrate. Fixation can then be avoided and very thin films can be applied for the purpose of chemical modification. Here chemical and electrochemical processes come into consideration which lead to the growth of oxides or other conversion products with the participation of the substrate. In this context, aluminum should be mentioned first, which allows anodic oxide layer formation with layer thicknesses of a few 10 μm under relatively variable conditions. As a rule, however, the anodization leads to layers whose roughness is far below the range necessary for the occurrence of ultrahydrophobia. DE 39 00 169 (1989) shows an example of the fact that the compression which usually takes place after the anodic layer formation can be combined with an impregnation which uses long-chain, organically modified acids and leads to an improvement in protection against atmospheric corrosion should. However, ultrahydrophobic properties are not achieved according to DE 39 00 169. JP 07003194 (1995) also aims at water-repellent treatment; here a high-gloss polymer coating is applied to an unspecified Al substrate. To increase the corrosion resistance of oxidized aluminum, EP 0 460 700 Bl provides for the action of fluorine-containing gaseous substances.
In contrast to the descriptions of the invention mentioned, JP 6306684 (1994) strives for a modified anodic layer formation which, by influencing the solution composition, is intended to bring about an improved adhesive strength of the corrosion-resistant coating applied subsequently. A change compared to the conventional procedure also lies in the in J. Colloid Interface Sei. 208 (1998) 287-294. Here, the surface of the oxide layer was roughened in 0.5 mol / 1 sulfuric acid at room temperature and an anodizing time of three hours, which was far longer than usual, and in combination with fluorinated monoalkyl phosphates or fluorinated trichlorosilanes, a significant increase in the contact angle and possibly. achieves an oleophobic surface.
The object of this invention is to provide ultrahydrophobic and thus contamination-resistant surfaces of metal materials.
According to the invention, the object is achieved by ultrahydrophobic surfaces which are obtained by surface structuring of metallic materials by means of intensified anodic oxidation or by etching or pickling treatments or by laser ablation and are equipped with a thin hydrophobic coating which does not significantly change the surface structuring.
According to the invention, ultrahydrophobic, metallic surfaces are produced in such a way that the required shape of the surface is produced in a first process step and in one a further process step, the structured, micro-rough surface is chemically modified using hydrophobizing substances or their solutions.
In an advantageous embodiment of the method according to the invention, anodic treatment is carried out under intensified conditions, especially in the case of aluminum materials. It had been shown that the adoption of known anodic process conditions, for example using borate buffer or 20% sulfuric acid solution (2.3 mol / 1), did not cause ultrahydrophobization with subsequent chemical modification. Even varied current densities (15-30 mA / cm 2 ) and varied temperatures (room temperature, 15 ° C, 30 ° C,> 50 ° C) did not lead to ultrahydrophobic properties in the case of anodic oxidation in 20% sulfuric acid solution. Positive effects were also not found in 0.5 mol / 1 H 2 SO 4 among those in the literature J. Colloid Interface Sei. 208 (1998) 287-294.
Die dynamische Randwinkelmessung mit Wasser ergab Fortschreitwinkel von ca. 155° bei praktisch verschwindender Hysterese (Θa ~ Θr).Surprisingly, it has now been found that such an interplay of oxide growth and dissolution occurs in a restricted temperature range and with a sufficiently long treatment period, which goes hand in hand with a qualitatively new roughening of the surface and leads to pronounced ultra-hydrophobic effects. The dynamic contact angle measurement with water showed a progression angle of approx. 155 ° with practically disappearing hysteresis (Θ a ~ Θ r ).
The anodic oxidation of Al materials in a sulfuric acid solution with a concentration of 0.5-5 mol / 1 is according to the invention at a current density of 20 to 45 mA / cm 2 , a temperature of 35 to almost 50 ° C and a duration of 1000 led up to 1800 s. In an advantageous embodiment of the method according to the invention, the anodic oxidation takes place in a sulfuric acid solution with a concentration of 2-2.5 mol / l, at a current density of 28 to 35 mA / cm 2 , a temperature of 35 to 45 ° C. and one Duration from 1200 to 1500 s.
As shown in FIG. 1 (exemplary embodiment 1) in the form of scanning electron micrographs at different magnifications and perspectives, with intensified anodic oxidation of Al Mgl, a surface consisting of mountain-like ridges is formed. shape, the characteristic distances of which are in the range of approx. 2 μm and the roughness components also in the sub-μm range. Metallographic examinations and AFM measurements showed that the profile height is approx. 2 μm, the total thickness of the oxide being approx. 10 μm.
As already mentioned, the effects described can only be realized in a comparatively narrow window of the experimental conditions. The sensitivity of the treatment to deviations in the conditions is demonstrated by embodiment 2 and FIGS. 2 and 3. It is demonstrated here that, under a certain set of conditions, a comparatively small change in the temperature or the duration of the treatment leads to a fundamental deviation in the surface shape and, as a consequence, does not lead to the development of the ultrahydrophobic properties.
Micro-rough surface structures with characteristic features in the order of magnitude of 1 μm can also be obtained according to the chemical and metallurgical properties of metallic materials " by etching or pickling treatments which are carried out under current flow or without external current. In the case of titanium, one by a series Very advantageous properties such as low density, high strength, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility, marked metal, an etching approach has been used to form the micro structure.First, there are unfavorable conditions for this metal as well as for other materials with a hexagonal crystal structure due to the pronounced anisotropic properties Surprisingly, with sulfuric acid / hydrochloric acid mixtures, media were found which, at a significantly higher temperature, abolish the passive properties and lead to a roughening, uniform attack on all grain cut surfaces, without selective corrosion (eg pitting corrosion) occurring or a preferred attack of the grain boundary areas being initiated. This is demonstrated in exemplary embodiment 3 (FIG. 4).
As an alternative to surface structuring by means of intensified anodic oxidation or by etching or pickling treatment, surprisingly by laser ablation it was also possible to arrive at suitable micro profiles from elevations arranged in an array, rend photolithographic chemical and micro-embossing processes had not led to full success. In contrast to ceramic materials, for example, the success of such an approach could not be expected from the outset. On the one hand, metals have a high reflectivity, which is associated with a reduced entry of the radiation energy required for evaporation. On the other hand, the energy dissipation into the interior of metallic materials is remarkable due to the high thermal conductivity. For metals with a low melting point, such as. B. AI (660 ° C), there is also the risk of "tapering" the microstructures to be achieved. All of this causes considerable uncertainty as to whether structuring and profiling in the range of less than 10 μm in the case of metals, including those with low melting points Surprisingly, however, microrough surface structures could be achieved by laser ablation.
For the laser-based surface structuring, both the mask projection process with an excimer laser and the direct writing process using Nd: YAG lasers with focused beam and scanning beam control could be successfully used, as documented in working examples 4 and 5. Fig. 5 shows a micro-rough surface structure from jagged bumps, which was obtained by laser ablation microstructuring of pure aluminum.
Trifunctional alkylsilanes of the R-SiX 3 type are suitable for the chemical modification of the structured surfaces with a thin, hydrophobic coating which does not significantly change the surface structuring, where X can be a halogen atom, an acyloxy group or an alkoxy group and R can be an alkyl radical with a chain length of at least 6 carbon atoms, whereby hydrogen atoms can be partially replaced by fluorine atoms, such as hexadecyltrimethoxsilane (HTMS), octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) or 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (PFDTES) or their solutions. Their connection to the hydroxylated oxide surface is conceivable via a covalent bond with the formation of (Al-O-Si) bonds.
N-(2-According to the invention, sequential use of an aminosilane, e.g. N- (2-
DuPont, erzielt.Aminoethyl) -3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (AAPS), and a perfluorinated alkanoic acid, eg perfluorononanoic acid, for ultra-hydrophobicization of the structured surfaces. Stable ultra-hydrophobization is also achieved when using AAPS and / or Teflon ® AF, Reliable ultra-hydrophobic treatment is also achieved when using AAPS and / or Teflon ® AF, an amorphous fluoropolymer from DuPont.
If there are oxidic, micro- or nanoporous surfaces, the primary surface structure can advantageously be solidified by treatment with polyalkenepoxides. As a side reaction of the covalent attachment of the polyepoxide to the structured surface, crosslinking reactions between epoxy groups and alcoholic OH groups occur in the polymer, which occur during the ring opening of the epoxide during the covalent attachment to the (metal OH) groups of the surface. Not all epoxy groups are opened or reacted in the reaction between the inorganic metals or their oxides. The residual epoxy groups can then be mixed with per- or partially fluorinated alcohols, e.g. Perfluoro-tert-butanol, 1H, 1H-perfluoro-1-octanol, 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluoro-1-octanol, 1H, 1H-perfluoro-1-decanol, 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluoro- Implement 1-decanol, 1H, 1H-perfluoro-1-dodecanol, 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluoro-1-dodecanol, 1H, 1H-perfluoro-1-tetradecanol and 1H, 1H-perfluoro-1-hexadecanol , The formation of the near-surface polymeric polyepoxide network mechanically stabilizes the primarily generated structures.

Using 2.3 mol / 1 H 2 SO 4 and a platinum counter electrode, the anodic oxidation is carried out at (35 + 1) ° C, a current density of 28 mA / cm 2 and with stirring for a period of 1200 s. The sample is rinsed under running water for a few minutes and kept under water to avoid atmospheric contamination.
The chemical modification is carried out by silanization after storage for half an hour in absolute ethanol with a 10% by volume HTMS solution in acetone with the addition of 5 drops of triethylamine as catalyst. The sample is rinsed with ethanol and acetone, air dried and annealed at 120 ° C for 1 h.
The dynamic contact angle measurement was carried out with water as the measuring liquid at 5-10 points on the sample surface at 10-20 measuring points of the contact angle per drop. With an average advancing angle of 116 ° and a retreat angle of 32 °, there were no ultrahydrophobic properties.
Ausfuhrungsbeispiel 1, Fig. 1), liegt nicht vor.FIG. 2 shows a scanning electron micrograph of an Al surface treated according to embodiment 2. A micro-rough surface shape, such as is formed by treatment at a temperature which is only 5 K higher and which was recognized as a necessary prerequisite for the development of ultrahydrophobic properties (cf. exemplary embodiment 1, FIG. 1), does not exist.
Überraschenderweise geht eine solche Zeitverkürzung nicht linear ein, sondern ruft eine qualitativ völlig andere Oberflächengestalt mit relativ glatter Oxidoberfläche hervor (Fig. 3).Similar imperfect results are obtained if the Al sample is treated under the conditions mentioned in Example 1, but the duration of the oxidation is not 1200 s, but only 1000 s. Surprisingly, such a reduction in time is not linear, but rather produces a qualitatively completely different surface shape with a relatively smooth oxide surface (FIG. 3).

A sheet metal sample of Ti (cp Ti Grade 2) is cleaned by using gasoline or acetone, pickled in a mixed acid of 4 mol / 1 HNO 3 and 0.9 mol / 1 HF at room temperature for 60 min and rinsed.
The surface is micro-profiled using a mixed acid of 4 mol / 1 H 2 S0 and 4 mol / 1 HC1 at 60 ° C, 40 min. This procedure results in a very finely roughened surface which has qualitatively similar morphological features to aluminum after intensified anodic oxidation in accordance with exemplary embodiment 1, but carries an only very thin oxide film.
To remove atmospheric contaminants, the sample is subjected to an O 2 low-pressure plasma treatment of HF plasma cleaning at low oxygen pressures. For chemical modification, the sample is always for 1 hour in a solution made of Teflon ® AF 1601 (as a 0.3% solution in FC 75) and after briefly drying in air in the drying cabinet (1 h at 120 ° C and 1 h at 170 ° C).
The success of the treatment was again demonstrated using dynamic contact angle measurement.
Ausführungsbeispiel 4FIG. 4 shows a scanning electron micrograph of a Ti surface structured according to embodiment 3, the sample again being tilted for better illustration. A surface shape characterized by mountain-like ridges is visible, the characteristic distances of which are significantly less than 1 μm. Embodiment 4
A sheet metal sample of pure aluminum AI 99.5 (EN AW-1050) is cleaned using petrol or acetone without any pickling treatment. The surface is profiled by laser ablation using a pulsed KrF excimer laser (248 µm), a Cr-quartz glass mask characterized by a square pixel pattern with a pitch of 750 μm and an objective that shows the mask plane 1:15 reduced on the sample and leads to local material removal. The mask and sample are scanned in a suitable manner so that a larger area is subjected to laser ablation.
To remove atmospheric contamination, the sample is subjected to a low-pressure O 2 plasma treatment.
The sample is rinsed with ethanol and acetone, air dried and annealed at 120 ° C for 1 h.
The dynamic contact angle measurement was carried out at 5-10 points on the sample surface at 10- 20 measuring points of the contact angle per drop. A sample of carbon steel C115 is cleaned using gasoline or acetone without any pickling treatment.
The surface is profiled by laser ablation using an Nd: YAG laser with a focused beam and a rasterizing, meandering beam control. This pre walking in well coordinated conditions led to an array of craters and interposed elevations with characteristic distances of approx. 50 μm. To remove atmospheric contamination, the sample is subjected to a low-pressure O 2 plasma treatment.
For chemical modification, the sample is always for 1 hour in a solution made of Teflon ® AF 1601 (as a 0.3% solution in FC 75) and after briefly drying in air in the drying cabinet (1 h at 120 ° C and 1 h at 170 ° C).
The dynamic contact angle measurement was carried out at 5 points on the sample surface with 10-20 measuring points of the contact angle per drop. Progress angles of approx. 157 ° and retreat angles of approx. 150 ° were measured.
Sheet metal samples of the aluminum materials AI Mgl and AI 99.5, the surfaces of which have one of the microstructures according to embodiment 1 (anodic oxidation) or 4 (laser ablation), were subjected to thorough drying in a vacuum drying cabinet (10 "3 mbar) for 12 hours 120 ° C for 30 min in a 25 ° C warm solution of 7.5% poly (butadiene epoxide) in benzene.
The poly (butadiene epoxide) was prepared by a known process [1, 2] from a commercially available poly (butadiene epoxide) with a molar mass of M n = 3000 g / mol so that the degree of epoxidation was 100% of the double bonds (approx. 75% of all double bonds) of the poly (butadiene epoxide) was. The contact of the pretreated aluminum surfaces with the molecules of the poly (butadiene epoxide) resulted in a reaction between the two reactants, as described in Ref. [2]. As a side reaction of the covalent attachment of the poly (butadiene epoxide) to the aluminum surface, crosslinking reactions between epoxy groups and alcoholic OH groups occurred in the polymer, which occur during the ring opening of the epoxide during the covalent attachment to the (Al-OH) groups of the aluminum surface.
After a 30 min contact of the aluminum samples with the poly (butadiene epoxide) solution, the samples were rinsed with benzene dried over sodium. Then were over 12 h of non-covalently bound poly (butadiene epoxide) residues removed with benzene in the Soxhletsche extraction apparatus. The extracted samples were dried in a vacuum drying cabinet (10 "3 mbar) for several minutes.
It is known that when poly (butadiene epoxides) react with inorganic metals or their oxides, not all epoxy groups are opened or reacted [2]. The residual epoxide content Q of the samples shown was determined according to [2] by IR spectroscopy between Q = 0.25 and Q = 0.35.
The residual epoxide groups were mixed with various perfluorinated or partially fluorinated alcohols, such as perfluoro-tert-butanol, 1H, 1H-perfluoro-1-octanol, 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluoro-1-octanol, 1H, 1H-perfluoro-1 -decanol, 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluoro-1-decanol, 1H, 1H-perfluoro-1-dodecanol, 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluoro-1-dodecanol, 1H, 1H-perfluoro-1-tetradecanol and 1H, 1H-perfluoro-1-hexadecanol. For this purpose, the aluminum samples coated with poly (butadiene epoxide) were placed in solutions of the perfluorinated or partially fluorinated alcohols in anhydrous chloroform (0.025 mol / l) dried over CaH 2 and boiled for 12 hours under reflux. The samples were then rinsed with commercially available chloroform, grade pa, and dried for 30 minutes in a vacuum drying cabinet at 10 "3 mbar and 120 ° C.
Die Hysteresen waren kleiner als 2°.Surprisingly, the residual epoxide density was high enough to provide the sample surface with a sufficient amount of per- or partially fluorinated alkane residues to achieve ultrahydrophobic surface properties. Dynamic contact angle measurements at 5 to 10 points of the samples at 10 to 20 measuring points of the contact angle per drop showed a progressive contact angle of 148 ° to 150 °, regardless of the alcohol used. The hysteresis was less than 2 °.
The formation of the near-surface polymeric poly (butadiene epoxy) network on the aluminum surface mechanically stabilizes the primarily generated structures.
